Makes sense if you think about it. If you're all powerful and fear nothing then why would you ever be upset, have an ego, or anything like that. Oddly enough it's only when he's around humans that he starts to gain those sorts of attributes.

Every scene Anthony Hopkins is in.....he commands the scene. What an inspiring actor. Every slight nod, averted gaze, change in breathing...a masterclass in acting.
What is so interesting about Hopkins is that he is not a method actor at all. He was never a Shakespearean stage actor like many other top British actors. He always wanted to work in Hollywood. He is a very down-to-earth and humble man who prefers to live his life away from the limelight.
Hopkins is superb, as usual, but Pitt is a match here, the two were incredible in this movie. I also really enjoyed Claire Forlani's portrayal of total innocence in the face of death. Perhaps a fitting metaphor for one so young...
First time I saw this movie was maybe 2013, flipping through the cable channels at college. It was the middle of dinner, Joe was talking to people around the table, and within 30 seconds I was like “Ok, Brad Pitt’s character isn’t human, is he possessed or something?” -it’s incredible to me that he could communicate that so well. I have no idea what a supernatural being would actually act like, but Pitt personified what I THOUGHT such a being would be. Really interesting.

I can tell you volumes about mangosteen and you'll know a lot about it, but when asked what it tastes like, you'll feel that same pang in your gut telling you, "I don't really know" and your intelligence might save you enough to describe it, but it'll still make you feel that way. Or you could just try it. That's wisdom. To quote Morpheus from the Matrix, "there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path." That whole movie is a great example of intelligent people searching for truth and finding subsequent wisdom.
I love the language in this movie. Sophisticated, educated. It's something that a lot of movies lack these days. It captures my interest and stimulates my mind
Modern movies are all about action, violence, CGI effects, explosions, one-liner punchlines, good guy killing/punishing the bad guy, and obligatory, plot irrelevant romance. Gone are the days when movies actually made you think, when movies captured your interest and stimulated your mind.

I had never noticed that before but, yes, when we can't quite see Brad through the glass, it looks very much like a skeletal head, a skull, the true head of the Grim Reaper. I always was a little put out that you really can't tell who it is but now I see that it looks just like a skull. And I wonder if that was planned or they just realized that the glass does the work for them.
@@Bear10174 It's really quite sad isn't it? Good writing is such a rare thing anymore. Movies have to be dumbed down so much and have everything spoon fed to the viewer so they understand. The new Dune movie is a good example. Great movie but there are a few lines in the movie that are just there to remind the viewer about something if they forgot about it already. It felt so wedged in that it ruined some of the scenes for me. "That's a Thumper, someone's using a Thumper." Uh no kidding, we just saw someone use one about 15 mins ago. People are surprised when I tell them that this is my favorite movie of all time. I tell them, every conversation has tremendous meaning. No scene was wasted. Every human emotion was portrayed at the highest level. Amazing acting, great Director

I just love this. They don't need any form of supernatural stuff happening for them to make him believe he is death. It's just a talk, sentences, words that form the understanding. No music no big camera shots or special effects. A long pause with both looking at each other. It's just so well made.
Pitt played this perfectly An entity with an intellect and existence that has spanned time infinity His look, his demeanor, his voice all show someone capable of being death

It is the most personal moment one can have in this world meeting the reaper. Nothing else exists at that moment. Everyone who watched this scene thought of his own experience when that time comes.
That directorial discretion was part of what made this movie so good. This scene needed the subtlety of silence, but the big finale's score helped lift that scene to such a heartbreakingly beautiful crescendo. My eyes get all leaky just thinking about it.

The creepy factor of this scene is that Death is speaking to Bill in his very own voice, using his own unique vocal nuances, and that's why Bill initially seems unsettled - taking a couple steps back - because he knows someone else is on the room but this invisible being is speaking to him on his own voice. Imagine Death Itself talking to you using your own voice. And then he appears, and he's a young, blonde kid in a suit, someone young enough to be Bill's own son, but he's the oldest and most powerful entity on Earth. Brad Pitt and Sir Anthony Hopkins were PERFECTLY cast for this film, and their characters match evenly and seamlessly. Not only that, but the actors themselves gel together nicely. I also love the fact that Death isn't a loud, intimidating and frightening being - he appears as an average guy you might see on any street in NY. He's quiet, stoic, contemplative. He sees the world like he's a child just discovering the workings of life, and Bill - the man he's come fo collect - is his guide. A man of experience in life guiding the spirit of the afterlife - Death in human form. This is my favorite movie of both actors.
What I like about this scene, is that Anthony Hopkins' character doesn't overly question it, he's correctly seen enough to convince him. If this were made today he would have had to be dragged on some overly indulgent CGI escapade so that both he and the audience were left with no doubt that there was no other outcome. If something like this were to happen in reality it would happen this way, and we as the audience know it.
Nah. When it happens in reality you just drop dead. Very few meet death. Those that do are usually unconscious . A few walk until the last moment but even they don't really meet death.
Right, the simplicity here is ... perfect. Using Hopkins' own voice, the simple optical effects, the pauses, the pauses giving us all time to breathe, to follow our characters and recognize. I think in my adolescence I might have been annoyed by the pacing here but it seems spot on and reminds me how the simple can be divine when given the right touch.
If this were happen in reality? Is Death really a spirit, a being, something tangible with the duty to take those who's turn to kick the bucket has arrived? Is Death a guide for the souls of those who passed away, is it the ferryman at the helm for those who cross the Styx? Or is just the end of existance, the cease of biological function, a word, a concept that just descrives the moment of our own demise? "In reality" is an expresion you can't use when talking about beings such as Death. No one knows what will happen if that omnipotent being is introduced to you. The movie keep it subtle because that was the tone of the movie. It was a drama first and foremost, a realistic flick with a little, very subtle touch of the supernatural. A CGI render of the afterlife with a giant black, hooded figure with a scythe will not be adecuate for this movie. However those big CGI stuff are perfect in movies like DUNE, for example, which aren't that different to this movie in terms of quality or seriousness. CGI didn't ruin anything. What ruined today's cinema, if anything, it's what always ruins everything. Money, and greed. Boring little thugs in grey suits taking over everything and indulging mediocre writers doing histories with no quality, vision or spirit. Copies of copies of things that did great back in the days, made only to make money, born without a soul, product of the endless grind of the capitalism machine.

Anyone who can stare down Anthony Hopkins in a scene like that is a truly talented actor. I had heard of Brad Pitt before this movie but had not really paid much attention before of him, after this my respect for him went sky high. Anthony Hopkins is a great actor but I never once felt like Brad Pitt failed to hold equal footing with him in this movie. I agree with others that this is a highly underrated film and the whole cast are excellent. Even though I have seen thousands and thousands of films this one is my clear favourite it is a slow burn but is beautifully paced and has some truly wonderful scenes with some nice surprises. Highly Recommended!
crebegea at the time Brad Pitt was a new very bright star but he was no where near the level of sctor Hopkins was. He later said it was his hope that he would learn how to act from working with guys like Hopkins.

I really like the concept of Death speaking in Anthony Hopkins' own voice at the beginning, then Death takes on a totally different form when he reveals himself as Brad Pitt. It's like Death is different for all of us, and yet intimately familiar.

I went to high school with Mary Stuart Masterson. So I know much better people look on screen with top-tier makeup and lighting professionals doing their thing. That said, it’s almost comical how handsome Pitt is here.
I don't think many of you realise that death was supposed to take Bill, in the helicopter in front of his daughter... But he got intrigued by his description of life and love, so gave him a few more hours, then tried to take him in his office but couldn't get over what he had said, so he recited it back to him, then spared him yet again
Death took over a body of person who just died, then gave them life again after it was done, just because the person was so insignificant, that their existence couldn't affect anyone. Their impact on the world is the same had they just remained dead or had a second chance at life. Quite sad.

When I saw it, I was totally unprepared for the death scene at the beginning when the cars hit the kid. It's one of the movie scenes of my life that literally threw me back in my chair and made me curse aloud in utter shock! I was flabbergasted and shocked to my marrow, as if I'd just seen the real thing. Totally unnerving.
Agreed. I was unnerved about how he was standing in the crosswalk like that to begin with. This movie is one of the main reasons why I expect a character to die everytime they cross a street.
What I love about this scene is when you compare this to his conversations with the Jamaican woman later in the movie it basically paints the image of a bus driver or relatively low ranking spirit who is basically puffing himself up to impress his reluctant host so he can get what he wants. As massive and eternal as the entity that Joe Black may be he is in the end only a very small part of a much larger picture. And as we find out by the end of the film he is in fact quite lonely.
I saw this as a child with my parents. It was a giant VHS double box set. Through my life I have never forgotten this scene. Such a powerful dichotomy of character bespoken subtly by fine dialogue and paced in such a way that it becomes plain - our rhythms are small before the utter magnitude of reality. Small and important. Remarkable. Let us dine together.
The eloquence in this movie never made me doubt the 'veracity' of its essence and forms of such a unique encounter in a human experience, such minute details in a lot of aspects. Or perhaps I'm seeing some where there is none, I like to think of the contrast in death's brightness behind the window, while being up close to Bill, something like his hair springs brightness in colours but roots down to pitch black to its core. Refreshing to enjoy a movie that doesn't solely relies on heavy expression of special effects made by computers, but rather all the effects made human acting. A solid and graceful performance.

Ah, Death with all his endless years was the innocent in this. Painful in his realization that he will never experience true mortal love the way other fleeting souls can. Stuck in the plane between worlds. he is envious of the journey we take between them. Very much like the old bachelor who drives the bus to the Airport. He sees couples and their kids , interacts with them, but can never know that which the family has, true love.

Even without breeding, a person can still truly love. The world needs few things more than love. It can be expressed and shared in infinite ways. Thinking love can be experienced only by having a nuclear family is shallow thinking indeed.
In terms of mere mortals dealing with Death it might not be the Seventh Seal by Bergman, but this movie has an excellent, unique way of setting a very somber tone in a very gripping way, with low-key but also very strong acting and directing. This scene is an excellent example.
I love literally every aspect of this movie. The music is amazing, the acting is amazing, the plotline and ability to completely immerse you in it through the camera work, the music, etc.... it is all quite original, one of a kind. This movie in it's entirety, is nothing less than a masterpiece! My favorite movie and soundtrack of all time, #1. I hope some new actors and writers come along and create something else that wins in every aspect like this. Sure there are many great movies that have come out since then but I would dare say, not a single one since possesses the level of class, and style as this. Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, Claire Forlani, Jake Weber, and the rest of the cast fit perfectly together, each an important piece roll, and that's another thing... there are no characters or rolls in this film where I would ask, "Is that character really necessary? Could've cut that one..." It would also wouldn't be just to leave out the fact that Brad and Claire are two people you can stare at for hours like a couple of galaxies above a country sky. Just remember to close your mouth. Death experiences life... It's a simple yet exquisite concept portrayed perfectly... if any of the writers or actors for whatever random reason find this needle in the haystack of a comment, Thank you for what I cannot get enough of, a movie I go back to every year and enjoy as much as the first time; as well as a soundtrack I have listened to consistently since I bought it back in 1998 (Thomas Newman). If anyone hasn't seen this... you're going to die. Try to squeeze this in before you do, because it is worth your time.

What a demanding role for Brad Pitt. He had to be a match for the great Anthony Hopkins, or not only a match he, had to incorporate greater authority. And he succeeded. This scene should have a place in film history. These great actors. Brad Pitt was so calm, his voice so deep and soft. His gaze at Bill. He did it. I admire him anyway but for these minutes I bow to him.
It's over 20 years since this film debuted, my how time flies for us humans, though not for Death it seems what with its ad infinitum into perpetuity. Whenever people call into question Brad Pitt's ability to act, I wish they'd give this interaction their full attention. His performance is filled with subtleties, a slight nod off the head here, a slight movement of the eyes there, and then there's those deafening silences. Not that I'm suggesting for one minute that he manages to upstage Anthony Hopkins, it's a fantastic rhythm of back and forth between them. Thanks for the upload.
This movie is possibly one of the greatest movies I’ve seen. The shadow of supernatural it cast with then actors every words pulling at the strings of your emotions. The ending is by far perfect leaving all you hopes just perfectly satisfied with just enough not. An the visuals of everything are out right perfect for a emotional roller coasters.
I must say, the comments on this film are delightfully sophisticated and somewhat refined! Many deep and profound thought's. I think in these statements you all make it obvious the actos did an exceptional job! And it is my humble opinion that this is the reason theses people act. Its so rare to hear any American that has even 10% of the vocal expression of Hopkins and several other top level British actors. Why they don't stress this in acting academies is a mystery.

The world really slept on this film. I only found it in 2022 and I am utterly amazed still. The writing, the acting, it was all oscar worthy. It's a shame critiques could only focus on the length of the movie instead of the content in between start and finish.

First time I saw this movie was maybe 2013, flipping through the cable channels at college. It was the middle of dinner, Joe was talking to people around the table, and within 30 seconds I was like “Ok, Brad Pitt’s character isn’t human, is he possessed or something?” -it’s incredible to me that he could communicate that so well. I have no idea what a supernatural being would actually act like, but Pitt personified what I THOUGHT such a being would be. Really interesting.

I think it is an exceptional movie. It has Mr. Hopkins, Ed Harris, Nicole Kidman, Gary Sinise, and Wentworth Miller in it. Not a big fan of Nicole Kidman, however she was outstanding in this movie. The way the glass makes him look blonde and then a skull is absolutely magnificent. Such a good movie with a phenomenal soundtrack.
I had never noticed that before but, yes, when we can't quite see Brad through the glass, it looks very much like a skeletal head, a skull, the true head of the Grim Reaper. I always was a little put out that you really can't tell who it is but now I see that it looks just like a skull. And I wonder if that was planned or they just realized that the glass does the work for them.

@@Bear10174 It's really quite sad isn't it? Good writing is such a rare thing anymore. Movies have to be dumbed down so much and have everything spoon fed to the viewer so they understand. The new Dune movie is a good example. Great movie but there are a few lines in the movie that are just there to remind the viewer about something if they forgot about it already. It felt so wedged in that it ruined some of the scenes for me. "That's a Thumper, someone's using a Thumper." Uh no kidding, we just saw someone use one about 15 mins ago. But thanks for the heads up.....

I just love this. They don't need any form of supernatural stuff happening for them to make him believe he is death. It's just a talk, sentences, words that form the understanding. No music no big camera shots or special effects. A long pause with both looking at each other. It's just so well made.

I love that this scene is playing with Silence instead of music. Its so much more dramatic without a musical guidance for your feelings.
JustLooseMe agreed. Your feelings fill in the silence. Another good movie that does that is No Country for Old Men. There’s no music at all as I remember, and it made it insanely tense.
Except it contains 2 artful little musical cues which help to put you in that supernatural space.
It is the most personal moment one can have in this world meeting the reaper. Nothing else exists at that moment. Everyone who watched this scene thought of his own experience when that time comes.
That directorial discretion was part of what made this movie so good. This scene needed the subtlety of silence, but the big finale's score helped lift that scene to such a heartbreakingly beautiful crescendo. My eyes get all leaky just thinking about it.

The creepy factor of this scene is that Death is speaking to Bill in his very own voice, using his own unique vocal nuances, and that's why Bill initially seems unsettled - taking a couple steps back - because he knows someone else is on the room but this invisible being is speaking to him on his own voice. Imagine Death Itself talking to you using your own voice. And then he appears, and he's a young, blonde kid in a suit, someone young enough to be Bill's own son, but he's the oldest and most powerful entity on Earth. Brad Pitt and Sir Anthony Hopkins were PERFECTLY cast for this film, and their characters match evenly and seamlessly. Not only that, but the actors themselves gel together nicely. I also love the fact that Death isn't a loud, intimidating and frightening being - he appears as an average guy you might see on any street in NY. He's quiet, stoic, contemplative. He sees the world like he's a child just discovering the workings of life, and Bill - the man he's come fo collect - is his guide. A man of experience in life guiding the spirit of the afterlife - Death in human form. This is my favorite movie of both actors.

Anthony Hopkins is honestly such a wonderful actor
What I like about this scene, is that Anthony Hopkins' character doesn't overly question it, he's correctly seen enough to convince him. If this were made today he would have had to be dragged on some overly indulgent CGI escapade so that both he and the audience were left with no doubt that there was no other outcome. If something like this were to happen in reality it would happen this way, and we as the audience know it.

Nah. When it happens in reality you just drop dead. Very few meet death. Those that do are usually unconscious . A few walk until the last moment but even they don't really meet death.

Right, the simplicity here is ... perfect. Using Hopkins' own voice, the simple optical effects, the pauses, the pauses giving us all time to breathe, to follow our characters and recognize.
I think in my adolescence I might have been annoyed by the pacing here but it seems spot on and reminds me how the simple can be divine when given the right touch.
If this were happen in reality? Is Death really a spirit, a being, something tangible with the duty to take those who's turn to kick the bucket has arrived? Is Death a guide for the souls of those who passed away, is it the ferryman at the helm for those who cross the Styx? Or is just the end of existance, the cease of biological function, a word, a concept that just descrives the moment of our own demise? "In reality" is an expresion you can't use when talking about beings such as Death. No one knows what will happen if that omnipotent being is introduced to you. The movie keep it subtle because that was the tone of the movie. It was a drama first and foremost, a realistic flick with a little, very subtle touch of the supernatural. A CGI render of the afterlife with a giant black, hooded figure with a scythe will not be adecuate for this movie. However those big CGI stuff are perfect in movies like DUNE, for example, which aren't that different to this movie in terms of quality or seriousness.
CGI didn't ruin anything. What ruined today's cinema, if anything, it's what always ruins everything. Money, and greed. Boring little thugs in grey suits taking over everything and indulging mediocre writers doing histories with no quality, vision or spirit. Copies of copies of things that did great back in the days, made only to make money, born without a soul, product of the endless grind of the capitalism machine.

Anyone who can stare down Anthony Hopkins in a scene like that is a truly talented actor. I had heard of Brad Pitt before this movie but had not really paid much attention before of him, after this my respect for him went sky high. Anthony Hopkins is a great actor but I never once felt like Brad Pitt failed to hold equal footing with him in this movie. I agree with others that this is a highly underrated film and the whole cast are excellent. Even though I have seen thousands and thousands of films this one is my clear favourite it is a slow burn but is beautifully paced and has some truly wonderful scenes with some nice surprises. Highly Recommended!

I really like the concept of Death speaking in Anthony Hopkins' own voice at the beginning, then Death takes on a totally different form when he reveals himself as Brad Pitt.
It's like Death is different for all of us, and yet intimately familiar.
A true underrated masterpiece and I believe the most powerful 6 minutes in any film I've ever seen. Extraordinary.

But he got intrigued by his description of life and love, so gave him a few more hours, then tried to take him in his office but couldn't get over what he had said, so he recited it back to him, then spared him yet again

Death took over a body of person who just died, then gave them life again after it was done, just because the person was so insignificant, that their existence couldn't affect anyone. Their impact on the world is the same had they just remained dead or had a second chance at life. Quite sad.

When I saw it, I was totally unprepared for the death scene at the beginning when the cars hit the kid. It's one of the movie scenes of my life that literally threw me back in my chair and made me curse aloud in utter shock! I was flabbergasted and shocked to my marrow, as if I'd just seen the real thing. Totally unnerving.
Agreed. I was unnerved about how he was standing in the crosswalk like that to begin with. This movie is one of the main reasons why I expect a character to die everytime they cross a street.
What I love about this scene is when you compare this to his conversations with the Jamaican woman later in the movie it basically paints the image of a bus driver or relatively low ranking spirit who is basically puffing himself up to impress his reluctant host so he can get what he wants. As massive and eternal as the entity that Joe Black may be he is in the end only a very small part of a much larger picture. And as we find out by the end of the film he is in fact quite lonely.
I saw this as a child with my parents. It was a giant VHS double box set.
Through my life I have never forgotten this scene. Such a powerful dichotomy of character bespoken subtly by fine dialogue and paced in such a way that it becomes plain - our rhythms are small before the utter magnitude of reality. Small and important. Remarkable.

I love the sound in this scene. The tick of a grandfather clock in the background accentuates the time and life motif in this crazy film.
The eloquence in this movie never made me doubt the 'veracity' of its essence and forms of such a unique encounter in a human experience, such minute details in a lot of aspects. Or perhaps I'm seeing some where there is none, I like to think of the contrast in death's brightness behind the window, while being up close to Bill, something like his hair springs brightness in colours but roots down to pitch black to its core.
Refreshing to enjoy a movie that doesn't solely relies on heavy expression of special effects made by computers, but rather all the effects made human acting. A solid and graceful performance.

Ah, Death with all his endless years was the innocent in this. Painful in his realization that he will never experience true mortal love the way other fleeting souls can. Stuck in the plane between worlds. he is envious of the journey we take between them. Very much like the old bachelor who drives the bus to the Airport. He sees couples and their kids , interacts with them, but can never know that which the family has, true love.

Even without breeding, a person can still truly love. The world needs few things more than love. It can be expressed and shared in infinite ways. Thinking love can be experienced only by having a nuclear family is shallow thinking indeed.
In terms of mere mortals dealing with Death it might not be the Seventh Seal by Bergman, but this movie has an excellent, unique way of setting a very somber tone in a very gripping way, with low-key but also very strong acting and directing. This scene is an excellent example.
There’s a wonderful portrayal of Death in The Last Action Hero, based on the 7th Seal version.
I love literally every aspect of this movie. The music is amazing, the acting is amazing, the plotline and ability to completely immerse you in it through the camera work, the music, etc.... it is all quite original, one of a kind. This movie in it's entirety, is nothing less than a masterpiece! My favorite movie and soundtrack of all time, #1. I hope some new actors and writers come along and create something else that wins in every aspect like this. Sure there are many great movies that have come out since then but I would dare say, not a single one since possesses the level of class, and style as this. Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, Claire Forlani, Jake Weber, and the rest of the cast fit perfectly together, each an important piece roll, and that's another thing... there are no characters or rolls in this film where I would ask, "Is that character really necessary? Could've cut that one..." It would also wouldn't be just to leave out the fact that Brad and Claire are two people you can stare at for hours like a couple of galaxies above a country sky. Just remember to close your mouth. Death experiences life... It's a simple yet exquisite concept portrayed perfectly... if any of the writers or actors for whatever random reason find this needle in the haystack of a comment, Thank you for what I cannot get enough of, a movie I go back to every year and enjoy as much as the first time; as well as a soundtrack I have listened to consistently since I bought it back in 1998 (Thomas Newman).

What a demanding role for Brad Pitt. He had to be a match for the great Anthony Hopkins, or not only a match he, had to incorporate greater authority. And he succeeded. This scene should have a place in film history. These great actors. Brad Pitt was so calm, his voice so deep and soft. His gaze at Bill. He did it. I admire him anyway but for these minutes I bow to him.
It's over 20 years since this film debuted, my how time flies for us humans, though not for Death it seems what with its ad infinitum into perpetuity. Whenever people call into question Brad Pitt's ability to act, I wish they'd give this interaction their full attention. His performance is filled with subtleties, a slight nod off the head here, a slight movement of the eyes there, and then there's those deafening silences. Not that I'm suggesting for one minute that he manages to upstage Anthony Hopkins, it's a fantastic rhythm of back and forth between them. Thanks for the upload.

This movie is possibly one of the greatest movies I’ve seen. The shadow of supernatural it cast with then actors every words pulling at the strings of your emotions. The ending is by far perfect leaving all you hopes just perfectly satisfied with just enough not. An the visuals of everything are out right perfect for a emotional roller coasters.
Best movie for decades to come, a respectful job well done to the producer....

Its so rare to hear any American that has even 10% of the vocal expression of Hopkins and several other top level British actors. Why they don't stress this in acting academies is a mystery.
What's Important? .... Stage acting is how they learn in Britain where there’s so saying cut if you get it wrong & no relying on microphones to project the voice

The world really slept on this film. I only found it in 2022 and I am utterly amazed still. The writing, the acting, it was all oscar worthy. It's a shame critiques could only focus on the length of the movie instead of the content in between start and finish.
This is my mums favourite movie. It makes me so emotional. I can’t believe it didn’t get more recognition, it is a masterpiece - and the music… oh wow.
I love the camera work in this movie. Keep re-watching it because of it.
