He didn't request a big party and she didn't ask, she just get ploughing through and annoying people with her high strung energy...trying to "be seen". It probably would have pleased him if she had stopped, and celebrated his birthday his way. That would have been the unselfish and heartfelt thing to do. She was a wearisome personality. The younger daughter seemed to get him as a person and didn't try too hard...even when he was difficult. She just vibed with her father and did what she felt was right for her.

I know right....the beauty and innocence of this movie makes for a truly romantic film. I remember reading shortly after the release of this movie that Brad Pitt criticized his appearance in this movie....saying he looked too much like a pretty boy. its a rare American film that is actually classy. Most times rich people come off as cruel or pretentious or loutish but this movie is beautiful in its elegance and simplicity. [He Does Give A Shit] context is clarified by the end of the movie, when she tells he that she wasn't his favorite. Him doing this small thing (Bite of Cake "with a dramatic gesture") is just saying that he loves her and she is not the least favorite.

The daughter worked hard to get those cakes. It meant a lot to her. And for the Dad to be so apathetic about the issue was really damaging to her. Sometimes we aren’t sensitive enough to see how our inaction hurts others when all u gotta do is “take a bite of the cake!” When he said “I don’t care, you choose” is the worst thing u could say to someone! Oh, for freakin' fuckily fuck... this scene reminds me of my own father, who never gave a single shit about me or my sister. And believe me: we tried, in countless ways... but his answer was always the same: painful silence, worse than a scream or a mockery gesture. I still wonder what the hell did we do wrong. Why he was so distant, even from himself!?
It may sound cruel, but when our father passed away, my sister and I felt a weird feeling of relief mixed with anger and sadness. We never had the "talk" every goddamn offspring has with their parents at some point. The closest thing we did was a speech in front of his grave.
    Rest in peace... mister.

Hard to say the reason without knowing the man. Sometimes its not about what you do that's wrong, but rather its because to some, it can be hard to express one self. I know this because I'm sometimes like that too. The most you get from your dad is probably just a nod, which can be confusing.
The closest analogy on how it feel is probably like when you first hold a kitten and you don't know what to do to avoid hurting it. Some people are like that, either from life experience or just how they are taught as a child. You might expect to hear him say "Good job" or "Nice work you did there" but to people like this, that sound insincere and sometimes feel wrong because it didn't quite feel right, like the word is a massive understatement. It certainly won't do to overpraised it as that too feel wrong and sound condescending. So in the end, they just be quiet, maybe smile a bit and probably nod.
Its not that they don't know how to love (else, he wouldn't even have your mother in the first place) but more like being awkward and not sure how to express themselves.

It's entirely possible your father came from a generation or culture of men that didn't dare to break with traditional modes of behavior when it came to male role models. The strict disciplinarian, the stoic lawgiver, etc. There are more than enough examples of that all around us. I would hope that he had feeling for you, but it's sad that you never felt that. It sounds he was pretty divorced from the courage needed to feel tender or vulnerable.
Fwiw, not every child will have that "talk" where the parent expresses an over-arching love or pride at some conclusion, or as an epiphany. Usually, that comes out over time, in the context of every day events, or transient asides; a gesture, a gaze, a chuckle. The "talk" you seem to idealize isn't really a thing. What would be nice is if you simply knew, because what else could it be? Hope you've found solace since then.

I'm sorry but I really hate "daddy" in this scene. If he had an ounce of common sense he would know he's hurting his daughter (even if she is superficial and doesn't know how to get along). This is where a "white lie" would come in handy.

She is hurting herself and creating unnecessary drama and tension, because it's all about her. Very high maintenance. Makes the whole party thing a total turn-off.

Tense and shallow, like a poorly designed, well built drumhead. Riches in hand exacerbate poorness of spirit, but it is not only the materially wealthy that suffer from breaking in the winds of time, rather than bending. It is when our own purpose in this existence becomes clouded, unattainable, that is when our souls dry up for naught of joy, and our bodies and spirit wither in regret. One cannot water a crop without rain, just as a people cannot endure constant trampelling.

Yep, I can see why this movie didn't do well. It's hard to sympathize with ultra wealthy people spoilt with opulence.

These enjoyable little snippets on RUclips eventually lured me into renting and watching the whole movie on Netflix. It turned out to be an overlong piece of shit.
