"Meet Joe Black" is one of the most overlooked masterpieces of American cinema. Death and Taxes = Pitt and Hopkins. And while I know little about Claire Forlani I am entranced by her beauty and have come to understand that she embodies LIVING, the very human connective tissue (or plot-driven peanut butter) between taxes and death. Susan is TIME, the dramatic unity and as such, her character experiences the progress of the plot. She is buffeted throughout, but it is also Susan who is the only mortal alive at the story's end. As a reward for loving us and guiding us throughout, Joe's body and soul are returned to her by Death. With a dash of dramatic license and a bit of help from forgetfulness, Joe and Susan (and we) are allowed to LIVE again. Why? To benefit from what we have learned in three hours--seemingly a lifetime for some and not nearly enough time for others. PS: The musical score is brilliant. The swell of joy at the movie's end invariably leaves me in tears... and probably you too. Thanks for reading.

He is a competent movie star. There is quite a distinction. He doesnt become the characters at all, he is Brad Pitt playing at simulating a character. But, he is as competent and entertaining at as the other movie stars such as Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Leonardo Dicaprio, Sandra Bullock, Will Smith, etc. Theres no shame in it, people are entertained by it. However, calling this acting is kind of a stretch and devalues acting as art. This is not art. This is a purely commercial endeavor rewarded by huge profits. This just my opinion on something completely subjective. I say like what you like. I like watching him too, but for me its mostly just because of how he looks. Even if he was just reading the dictionary, if he moved around and changed his facial expressions and used his eyes the way he does, it would be enjoyable to watch.

It's both a sad and a happy moment. Bill willingly goes to death because he has done to set out and do and death realises what a human feels and looses when they leave their loved ones behind and he finds he can't leave himself because he loves the younger daughter.

I agree. You have one of the greatest character actor s in Anthony Hopkins who knows he is dying and have some one daughter whom he loves dearly but he is not about to marry like he and his late wife did. Then you have a young man just starting out as an actor given a great role that of playing death . This is the story of these two men and their few days together and the result.

Maybe it's just me, but this scene as they walk off together reminds me of the story in last Harry Potter film about the man giving up the invisibility cloak & greeting Death as an old friend.

You know what bugs me about this last scene? She watches her father and death walk away knowing who he really is and knowing deep down that she's about to lose her father forever yet she seems to have no remorse about it when Joe comes back into frame. Your dad's dead around the corner, pretend you care a little bit.

@Vanilla, I understand how you see it but you're looking at it from a personal viewpoint not objectively, meaning, she's shocked, starting to fall in love with a mysterious man who now is the angel of death that she made love to, her father likes the man who is changing everything around her and her life. its all hitting her at the same time that death is here for her Pops while trying to figure out if there is a way to stop it and so on. The point is that you have to place yourself in her shoes first to understand her plight and reaction. Its not as simple as you see it.

So at the end does death take his whole body to the other side? Or does he just take the spirit and there is a lifeless body some where! Lol

Burton Pierre i tthink there is no lifeless body. Death took him whole away as a gift for being who he was and proably talked it over with god. Cool otherwise we would have had the body scene

They talk about an autopsy in the dialogue. Death is a "soul", and he takes Anthony Hopkins characters soul with him. In addition, the guy death killed in the beginning's soul is restored and he "comes to". That's how I took it.

Death will leave him on the other side of the bridge ..his physical signature from this life will remain there...his soul and spirit will leave with Death who will guide him to where he wants to be....and to know that you could have the divine choice to state maybe at what time or place in your past existence you want to arrive at... that single moment to be with ..a loved one ...a lost love ..your mother and father sister or brother...a special place ..an event...or a country
a friend long since departed..anyone anywhere at any time .To see.. to feel ..to be there
once more and to know that you are truly at peace.
We are born of the very fabric this universe exists from ...we owe our existence to the stars...A Super Nova gave us everything that we are ...every single element in our bodies that makes us Human comes from the stars. We really are children of the stars. But we do not know all its secrets ...its sanctuaries cannot be seen but exist so close to us yet so very far beyond what we understand...we are but one last heart beat away from everything we will ever want to know or see...It truly must be a Divine place...But we just can't see it from here.

CV Yes we are a species of Animal
But the only one with the ability to
ask why we are here...where did we come from ...to look for answers to what lay beyond our limits of understanding.CV surely
as the tides come and go you to possess those human curiosities.
As does every single one of us.
      Cheers my friend.

I try to figure out what would happen after this scene. I always thought that the to person to who the body of Pit's character belongs to is the number one suspect for murder of the Hopkins character. I mean, the daughter sees them walk away together. Then he returns alone with amnesia. I assume her dad's body is somewhere back there.
