One of the things I love about this movie is that it gives the actors time to actually act. The movie has a very long running time, especially given the fairly simple plot. But it gives the actors time to react in ways that you don’t usually see in a movie. Not every minute of a movie has to be about driving the plot forward.

Brad Pitt’s body language in this scene is what makes this scene work. When he was playing “Joe” he was calm, cool and completely in control of himself. His movements were not rushed. He moved only what he had to, when he had to. Here in this scene his movements are nervous, rushed and awkward. He is in fact embarrassed. You can see that in his movements, expressions, his eyes and words. This is flawless acting.
EDIT: Claire Forlani’s acting in this scene is done entirely with her eyes, tone of voice and facial expressions. And she absolutely nails it.

@@Soozalou397 Hello, I may have answered this incorrectly, from her perspective. So I thought I’d give it another try. Absolutely. The guy in the coffee shop made it clear how he found her amazing by the comments that he made about marriage and finding the right girl…”Who knows, maybe it’s you…” and, “Lightning could strike,”; and the long, adoring gaze he gave her as they were saying goodbye, “I don’t want you to be my doctor because I like you so much.” I’ve seen that before, when someone simply. adore someone for who and what they are without any effort. The coffee shop scene for me is very raw and honest, vulnerable.

nope. he only rented the coffee shop guys body for awhile, he never intended to take it with him. where Joe lives there is no body, so you cant switch out. its called being 'a walk in'...a spiritual entity takes on a human's body and ejects the old personality so it can enter. I can promise you Joe did not love her, he was only experiencing humanity through the body and in relationship with her. she, on he other hand loved who she thought Joe was...but you cant love someone you don't know so she says 'we know so little about each other'. it was a charade, it was not love.

But I've always been in search of something deeper that I've never seen on those faces. Claire possesses all this depth in quantities that amaze and mesmerize someone like me. Her eyes can write their own dictionary. In addition, the woman knows how to move. She's not afraid to be awkward at times, only to demonstrate all the splendor of femininity in the next frame in a special Claire branded way. I'm honestly amazed that such a phenomenon hasn't achieved a bigger career considering what empty human forms we see on screens today. On the other hand, I've read that she's been attacked several times by producers, so I'd gladly trade her security for not appearing in films. I know she's out there somewhere, safe and I hope happy, and that with her beauty and grace she enriches the lives of those she's chosen to be with.

SHADOWLANDS is an amazing tale of loss and grief and happiness, too. It's overlooked but for those who've seen it, it probably stands above.

I always wondered how come Claire Forlani didn't become a bigger name. Then I remembered who was in charge in Hollywood during the 90s, and it probably says a lot of good about her as a person that she didn't.

IF the film had been a hit, she would be one of Hollywood's leading actresses. She completely knocked it out of the park and ended up making bad movies with Jackie Chan. Go figure.
