Why Did Ahsoka ONLY Use One Lightsaber Against Baylan Skoll in Star Wars?
Baylan was such an interesting character, there was so much they could do with him, its such a shame the actor passed away, he was so talented, RIP Ray Stevenson
There could still be a recast
@@cngotham4111 I believe a recast has been confirmed for season 2, don't know who yet but Ray's performance carried the show for me
Damn he died that's so shit he was in so many good films
@@tomayto70I heard rumors of liev schrieber... I'm down but RIP ray 😢
I posted a comment myself about how they could not ruin Baylans character and Ray Stevenson's acting by basically not recasting him. If you check out my comment I talk about how a good option was since the Mortis Gods are going to be a big part of season 2 that they could do just one short scene of Ray Stevenson with AI or whatever turning into or being possessed by one of the gods. Not only would this preserve his memory of the good acting he did and not ruin his character but it would be a really cool twist that they could do a ton of different stuff with since the Mortis Gods can transform into different beings and different people etc.
She’s also trying to grab the star map, which was the primary objective-not winning a duel.
Yup! Mentioned that in our video: ruclips.net/video/GNRXTDYNswY/видео.htmlsi=vylp4hqoBMQaaZ5a
Yeah but simultaneously Baylan was trying to stop her, and not necessarily kill her
Baylan had the upper hand most of the time and could maybe kill her he was only defending the map and he actually didn’t want to kill her but then shit happend and he strikes her in the end
@@Banlox70
Reminds me of the fight with Maul
Reminds me of her and Maul. Maul didn't want her dead, and they ended up with a longer lasting duel than what would've happened otherwise.
Note how skoll held his saber. Not just with two hands, but also, there was space between the grips. This allows for very powerful strikes.
This is the correct way to hold pretty much any 2 handed sword
And we call that, Leverage🎉
I was literally in a argument with someone who thought that curved hilt lightsabers offer an advantage in a saber lock, despite all your hands are at the top of the hilt, nearly burned off, while the second half curved hilt is dangling on the bottom, unused lol (used count doku vs anakin in episode 3 as an example)
@@ryguy1483 That person probably doesn't know what gravity or leverage is
@wardencatrameowmeowapplesa904 He tried to use a excerpt from the Bane novels that some sith weapon master said. Something like "two handed djem so curved hilt blades offers the ability to... bypass the defenses of the opponents depending upon how you move your body?" I'm paraphrasing, but he did have a source stating it CAN work. However, I chalk that up to the writer of the novel trying to perform mental gymnastics as to why he wants his preferred form to be more viable, because I can't see that realistically happening in any fight, regardless of sci-fi or real life lol.
Baylon is so cool he’s like a mix of Vader and Dooku, elegant and aggressive
A little bit with his own flavour and style yeah! 😃
He's easily the coolest part of this series so far. His allies are kind of meh. Though they don't get enough lines to stand out.
Yeah, too bad the actor passed away. I didn't even recognized him from the Punisher movie, guy was doing a great job in this role.
am i the only one getting a weird feeling of him turning back to the light? we keep getting these glimpses of his past and how much he actually misses the order
he's some random wanker who we somehow have never heard of. WTF are all the fanbois drooling over him?
Yeah this was a very well done scene imo, felt very reminiscent of the last obi wan vs maul fight from rebels but with more content! They decided to focus on the techniques more and I think it really shines
100% agreed
No. It didn't.
@@ClearmindArtist explain
@@ClearmindArtistInstead of just saying "No", maybe explain your point of view?
Ik ik i thought it was a callback
Skoll was like black knight from medieval stories. I loved it
I think we know the real reason though: the actress they chose to play Asoka has no acrobatic talent nor ability to convincingly fight with two light sabers on camera. I'll never understand Disney's casting choices, why they pick people that have no experience with martial arts or gymnastics to play a role like hers.
"Tis but a scratch"

@@BoopSnoot Amen! She's just terrible. She's so slow!
Baylan was one of the rare instances in which Disney did not mess up
I think the entire Ahsoka series is great. The same goes for Kenobi and The Mandalorian. The only problem is there is too much CGI Anakin. We saw him in Kenobi, and that was enough, but they decided to film almost a full episode about him
@@lkjgjiy7312 maybe because Anakin is literally the main person of the whole Star Wars story?

When it comes to the writing aspect I would say it's for the climactic effect, so that when they met again for round two, she can use both sabers in an even more epic fight and perhaps even win.
I’m very saddened to tell you Skoll’s actor has passed away just before the airing of this episode, there probably never will be a second duel if it’s not done by the end of Season 1
@@victorbenoin4732 Yes, I know. I love his performance and his character. But I meant a potential second duel in the first season (which happened).
@@victorbenoin4732maybe they'll find a spiritual successor for the actor ? Not everyone would be happy unless it was someone with heart?
Na, she still lost. Can't win every fight.
I thought she only used one so she would have an open hand to grab the map
It’s both
Just imagine trying to deflect a brawn man with two-handed strikes while you try to fend off those strikes with literally half your strong gone (while using two lightsabers, I mean) It's really, really hard. So single saber was the best choice + her form is indeed not good in that setting.
@@ryguy1483Eh, cinematically maybe, practically big advantage with a shield or two weapons - you can parry or evade an attack, keeping the one blade at bay with your shield or blade (in this case) and respond with the other in the same tempo. Sure, it wouldn't look as cool but especially with lightsabers' (nigh?) weightless nature, the added strength is unlikely to do much more than speed.
@DamianSzajnowski Lightsabers have weight and shields in star wars are underutilized
Nar, kendo requires two hands because it's more power than one hand strikes.
I honestly think the reason she use one saber is so she had a hand available to take the map. Magic would not allow her to force pull it off. You see her attempt to grab it, or get in position to grab it during her fight. Her only mental distraction came when she thought Shin Hati killed Sabine. She did not go there to kill Baylon, she went there to acquire the map. Also, she just beat Marrok with one saber because she knew she didn’t need two.
I guarantee the next time they fight, She uses two lightsabers and she kills him easily. Next time they won’t be there for a map, they will be there to fight.
@@dustingre8she likely will still use 1 using two would just make it more difficult to defend
@@dustingre8I come from the future. 2 sabers and it still was a draw
I love the heavy lean into Kendo and samurai based stances and combat. Really bringing the Jedi back to its roots and exploring its inspirations
Exactly but also Baylons fighting style more so resemble a knight who fights with a two handed sword and trying to fight that with both the daito and shoto blades would be very ineffective.
I guarantee she knows all of Baylon's moves. He's like non robotic 1/4 power Vader
Using two lightsabers would also drain het stamina more. As both arms are moving. Against Vader, he used her aggressiveness against her prolonging the fight which worked to his advantage. Same for Baylin. She judged his stature, length, of blade and likely felt she was outmatched physically so she needed to use one saber only.
you also forgot Vader was her formore master and taught her how to used her lightsaber it was not just his aggressive fighting style. So him knowing her fighting style was still there.
“She realized that didn’t work on Vader because of his aggressive fighting style”
And also because he trained her. He knew every move she would make before she made it
Or she also had to grab the map
What a detail... I never thought of that!
Yep, my assumption was it was leverage. If she only has one hand on the blade, he is going to use his superior strength and his full upper body strength to power through her guard and hit her anyway.
Yes she realized her dual wielding against vader was just not effective. Sure she injured him, but if wasn't for ezra, she would of lost. Vader was close to striking a fatal blow. She learned the Baylan uses a similar fighting style and had to use a single blade skill
Wrong! Ahsoka could have beat Vader, but your statement is the wrong assumption. She only lost because she put her sabers in the floor in an attempt to sacrifice herself and Vader because she closed herself in the temple on purpose. She said she wouldn’t leave anakin, and she was keeping her word
To me, it looked like Ahsoka was doing a lot better in her fight against Vader than when she fought Baylon. Ahsoka essentially lost both fights, but her old master got a serious run for his money
The over analyzing is funny. She used one saber to test baylan. The moment she would go Dual wield she would have beat him easily. She in fact had him beat when she went for the map, but was not expecting to be burned by it. After that the tables turned.
@@TheJadedJamesBaylan is better than Vader.
@@pan1tal0coCope. The large white dude won.
I always saw Baylan as a person who wields his lightsabre like a claymore. With both hands and extremely powerful strikes behind each swing.
She needed all her power one one saber to defend efficiently
That makes a lot of sense, this is a sequel to Rebels show. Thank you so much btw!
Baylan has those ferocious strikes like a pissed off Vader has you could feel the power behind them
Ahsoka seems to get her butt handed to her whenever she tries fighting with one blade.
She killed the inquisitor marrok with a single lightsaber
@@therjshow8768 I'm just saying this seems to be a slight pattern with Ahsoka.
Eh if you watch this fight, Ashoka was kinda cooking Baylan and she only starts losing once she burns her hand. If Ahsoka wasn’t under time constraints, didn’t have to think about her apprentice, and didn’t have to burn her hand to stop the map, i feel like she just cooks Baylan everytime
@@blackprovostpublications5225 I have not even watched the Ahsoka series I just know a lot of her losses are when she fights with one saber.
Ah Ahsoka. She knew how to handle a meatsaber better than anyone else in the Jedi-Temple.
As Vader said: If youre strong with the force, you dont need multiple lightsabers
This series was peak star Wars, hope we get new seasons soon
Just like how cal does it, his style switches between one saber and a staff saber, single for one-on-ones, and staff for crowd control
she also was trying to grab the star map and burned one of her hands, so she had to fight with one hand and one lighsaber
I love it when directors understand what makes a fight between two master swordsmen good. It isn't the flashy acrobatics or stylish moves but the way they adjust their stances right down to the minute details in preparation for their opponent.
This shows how much love and effort was put into Ahsoka series.
Not to mention it’s also anakins lightsaber form that she’s using when it’s one handed (I’m pretty sure). Then he shows up 20 min later
I think they nailed it with Ahsoka. Ticked all my boxes. Bravo
I loved Baylon Skol's lightsaber style. Very reminiscent of medieval sword styles. It almost made him seem like a fallen knight.
The force of the blow is twice as powerful for the double handed grip
-Afro Samurai
The acolyte would NEVER do this much research to choreograph a scene
Dooku laughs in 1v2 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Real reason they didn’t wanna have to many stunt doubles and have a yoda level of flips from attack of the clones even though that’s her fighting style
Imagine how that would look with todays visuals, this show should of been a movie and had a complete different plot and cast
Dawson would require an inordinate amount of training that would only be worth it on costs for a full film. She doesnt have a history of swordsmanship and sparring. It tooke Hayden and Ewan months to learn what they needed for their scenes. Same with the guy who played Maul. I recall a set director talking about the stench of the studio during training days. Even Sir Christopher Lee watched from time to time and gave pointers along with the trainer and his own stunt double due to his prior experience as a fencer.
Ray Steveson did a fantastic job using Form V in Vader's style
It would be cool to see Ashoka do some of her clone wars like acrobatics.
Some people even did her acrobatics in the clone wars which proves you can legitimately do it, although it was just her vs Darth maul
Bro is like dooku and Vader, I like it
Ahsoka ruled! Loved that show! Obi was also pretty good, but they’ve managed to screw it up with Acolyte… bravo 👏
dooku fighting with one hand behind hos back: 🗿
"I don't lose fights" such a typical snips response
Jar'Kai which is fighting with a lightsaber in both hands is weak against Djem So and Juyo. As already stated in the video, one hand is not good against a strength based form. Not to mention, the user of two blades becomes too reliant on the extra blade usually. This is why Vader trained Starkiller's clone in Jar'Kai.
Baylan quickly became one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars. RIP Ray Stevenson. You left this world far too soon.
Bro both of them had multiple opportunities to kill each other during the duel but no one decides to go for the killing blow until the plot deems it
Baylan's fighting style reminds me of a mix of Ben Kenobi and Qui Gon's style.
Ahsoka being smart to change forms like final battle of obi-wan and maul.
Dual wielding is also often more difficult as it gives less control in a fight leaving you more open.
It looks cool, but not very practical. It takes a LOT of skill to be able to do it effectively. Even then, you're leaving yourself open more often than not.
Vader doesn't always use two hands. Sometimes he switches into Dookus known form 2 of Mekashi. Which he learned after fighting him. And a lot of times u see him use one hand which is the form 2. Look at the final battle with Luke in ROTJ. BUT he does use multiple forms which requires two hands alot. He switches in and out of multiple forms a lot.
Dooku against Baylan would be like watching a rapier against a zweihander. Vader and Baylan would be cool to see for their similar use of strength and heavy blows.
More like a Spanish Saber since Dooku didn't really use thrusts all that often, but style very deft and elegant cuts.
@@solidmoon8266 Is there a more specific name? I'm looking up Spanish Saber and a bunch of cavalier-looking swords are coming up, or am I on the right track? Looks like it'd have a similar weight and balance to a rapier, though with a slight curve.
Dooku's and Revan's lightsabers are top tier for me. Baylan's lightsaber saber is a second favorite
Baylan is strait up a medieval knight with a long sword.
For a hot minute, I thought she gave her short sword to Sabine. To improve her chances against Shin. She didn't.
look at the choreography, you can see in every fight how theyre just letting opportunities to strike go, like look at the fights, they choose not to strike. they wanted to make her look better when they have a rematch by using 2 sabers
The Ashoka nerf in the show is crazy aswell like she squared up with maul dude
I love how there is a reason for almost everything in star wars (except for the sequels)
Sad about Stevenson passing away. Glad I'm not in the showrunners shoes cuz that's a tough situation
He has the same stance as Qui-Gon Jinn
ahhhhhhhh that explains this. I was super confused because even she thought she was better with two lightsabers
I've been pointing this out. I feel like people think she did better against Vader than she actually did. Taking a different approach to an opponent similar to Vader was just the smart play.
Tbh I know people didn’t like the Ashoka series much but I thought it was better than what Disney had produced in a while aside the mandalorian. It wasn’t bad at all in my opinion.
His lightsaber is super heavy too. Like the Uber itself is really heavy which is why he needs both hands.
I’m gonna miss that character from the Star Wars universe, Stevenson did such a phenomenal job.
Not only did ahsoka almost win while not trying to duel balyan, but she also burned her hand lol.
RIP Ray! 💐
Rest in peace. Maybe the force be with you.
Single light saber is for power, duel light sabers is for speed, double bladed light saber is for defense.
Another thing I noticed was their ready stances before the fight. Ahsoka changed stances several times but Baylan did not. To me that says he is undeviating from his course.
She was holding back.
I’d argue just because she told Sabine they might need to give up on Ezra doesn’t necessarily mean she thought they must. She probably kept an arm free so she could grab the map, not knowing how much it would affect her.
kali (sword fighting) instructor here, she fought with one sword because the writers didn’t understand her character’s fighting style. double wielding weapons is not hard when you get used to it and she is DEFINITELY used to it. space and etc are not important factors in this scenario. she fights in a totally different way from the clone wars.
Asoka and Luke are both the chosen ones, and the poncho man😎
Then theres Dooku who specialises in one hand 1v2 combat 😂
Tell us you don’t know how basic sword fighting physics work without telling us you don’t know how basic sword fighting physics work.
And then she must have forgotten that it was hard against Darth Vader because in Episode 5 in the WBW she fights Darth Vader with 2 lightsabers until he disarms her from her shoto blade.
The second point was a common weakness in Jar'Kai, Asajj Ventress also frequently faced this problem as shown in her first duel with Anakin
** new objective: fight baylan**
Here I thought she just really believed in fairness
Its incredible that Disney made a good character in Baylan and the IRL actor passes away. At least we still have Morgan Elsbeth.... or right.
Granted, I only saw the sea once but, under the impression that she lost that scene because she was emotionally processing what she believed to be the death of her student it was therefore not focused on her defense at that time.
If that were the case, it is dumb.
The whole reason she used the reverse grip duel wield technique, was because Master Yoda instructed her to do so since she was uncomfortable with how Anakin was instructing her. Duel-wielding was more natural for her and was the technique she was most comfortable with, along with the reverse grip. The minute she opted to fight in any other way, her defeat was guaranteed.
Not necessarily. In her second duel with him, she uses both sabers, but still has a mission taking priority over the fight. There were countless times during the fight, with her dual wielding, she could have killed Skoll, and chose to elbow him instead or hit him.
He beat her the first time, because she was un-blanaced, and her judgment clouded. Baylan didn't kill her during their fight though...she never died at all honestly. Ahoska is immortal...no normal weapon can kill her. Anakin saying "you lost", is in reference to the fight it's self.
Its nice to see the hero doesn't always win
Luke would like a word with you.
@@ClearmindArtist get over it it's good writing
“Confined space”
Then there's Malgus, who doesn't have any fucks to give and will overwhelm.
Vader knew her style since he taught her how. His agressive style wasn't necessarily the main cause. At least as far as I think I know these two characters.
I remember a few other deep lore videos that also said the Dual Lightsaber forms taught to Ashoka and Starkiller were what Vader WOULD have used if he hadn't been so heavy with his prosthetics. But his apprentices were stronger, more agile, and capable so he taught them both how to fight like that, although clearly taught them differently as one was lighter and more acrobatic, while the other more athletic, and of course aggressive, thus giving the two similar, but slightly different dual-wielding styles.
Anakin Skywalkers Dueling form that he beat Dooku with is a great example of adapting to win
Makashi is a powerful form
I still think Vaapad is the best form
When you are trained by the Chosen One and you still get bodied by some random Jedi.
"...by some random Jedi"
Thrawn "GENERAL Baylom Skol from the Jedi Order"
Bruh....if Thrawn knows about you, you're not some random Jedi.
R.I.P. Ray Stevenson !
Bruh she burnt her hand.. I bet she planned on using both, until she tried to grab the map. There was more than enough room for her to use both.
Easy Answer. Using both hands on a lightsaber can defend better against someone who is using powerful strikes.
Confined space? It was outside with pillars to jump of from, sounds perfect for ataru
I honestly had no idea that the actor that played Baylan died. Now for season 2 a lot of people are saying that he could be recast and whatnot but honestly I think that would really ruin his character. Ray Stevenson did way too good of a job and when you recast somebody that doesn't look the same and act the same it just never truly works right, not to mention if they recast him his fighting style, mannerisms, speaking etc etc. will all just be way too different and not good. IMO what they should do is since season 2 has the Mortis Gods from The Clone Wars coming back they should just do one short scene with Ray Stevenson (using either cut together scenes or AI or something since it's not going to be a very long scene) basically turning into or being possessed by one of the Mortis Gods. If you remember, the gods could transform into different beings and different forms and whatnot so this would not only solve the problem of the actor dying and keep his memory alive and well of the good job he did but also be a super cool and interesting twist that they could do a ton of stuff with. What do u guys think?
For short: dual wield means less strength in each blade, one blade with two hands is more strength. Thats what she needed against a physically stronger enemy
there are unblockable strikes you can do with two lightsabers. star wars never uses them because it would be too easy.
The only thing that really led to her defeat was that she lost focus because she thought Shin Hati had killed Sabine.
With the amount of times these shows make the characters lock sabers and stare at eachother for an uncomfortable amount of time she could definitely use her second saber to sneak a stab into her opponent
The basic explanation was, it was the only way to fight Baylan given how he was towering the place
It was the Samurai VS the Knight!!
