  • Welcome to Type 2 Diabetes number 21. I’m Doctor Vladmir Carvalho, and I’m an endocrinologist. In this video, I explain how to understand if your body is still producing insulin by introducing the C-peptide test. This test provides insights into the functionality of your beta cells, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. I discuss how insulin and C-peptide levels correlate with glucose concentration, thereby providing valuable information about your body's insulin production and beta cell health. I also cover various scenarios to interpret C-peptide test results in relation to blood glucose levels, helping you understand different diabetes conditions and how they affect insulin production.

Very nice way of explaining doc. I have watched several videos but didn't completely understood about c peptide but your single video clarified my all doubts related to c peptide. Great way of explaining.

I had a carb challenged C-peptide done recently, and I found it quite interesting but also frustrating that the clinician used the result from the challegend test as if it were interchangeable to the FASTING C-peptide test! To me it's obvious that I continue to SLOWLY loose insulin production, despite all my efforts.

Thanks. You don't always need to do a C-peptide test. With enough experience you can know your beta cell function. If you have type 2 diabetes those numbers are not bad. Are you taking any medication or just managing with lifestyle intervention?

Thanks for watching all my videos, that's encouraging. Insulin gives a lot of instructions to the liver when it comes to metabasin. So, if the liver is resistant to insulin (insulin attaches and the liver doesn't recognize it) it will not know what to do with glucose, or even produce and release extra glucose in the blood when it shouldn't. I will make a video to explain it.

When should we do this test I mean after how many minutes or hours of high carb meal to check the performance of c-peptide ( beta cell of pancreas )?

Excellent explanation. What is is the ideal range for C peptide and insulin level. I think I am at 2.8 and insulin at 7. What does it say about my beta cell function?

Hi dr Vladimir, great video! My situation is that my fasting C peptide is low 378 pmol/L ( ref val 270-1730) and fasting blood sugar and insulin are good - in the reference range ... I am overweight 12 kg ... I have not been diagnosed with any type of diabetes but 4 years ago I was diagnosed with hiperinsulinemia ... I do not understand how low c peptide correlates with overweight (is it way to diabetis 2) ?

    Hello Doctor.
My fasting c-peptide was .9 and insulin was 2.8 and fasting glucose was 91. I have been trying to lose weight on keto first the past 6 months and I can’t get the scale to budge. I self ordered these test because I suspect I have an issue here. I also was a gestational diabetic on insulin and my son has poly glandular dysfunction. So my first thought was that I have some sort of diabetic condition. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thank you.

My endocrinologist just told me that all my test were ok, that to not worry about having diabetes but I took a look at my lab sheets later on and saw a very low fasting insulin result. I will ask him tomorrow but what does low insulin lab result mean ?

I have been chasing severe symptoms for years and I have been unable to get help. I was hoping to get some advice, and I know you are not giving medical advice, but maybe some testing or others recommendations. I experience severe hypoglycemic type episodes with normal blood sugar levels. I eat Constantly, to try and keep the events down. Mostly protein meals, and I don't really eat sugars, junk food, etc. My cpeptide levels are high, 4.79 and every time they check me, I have blood in my urine, RBC I. Urine and my PH is always high, as well as very high inflammation markers. My neurologist says he thinks it is some form of tumor or cancer type issue that they can't find. I appreciate your thoughts on having high c-peptide with normal blood sugar but having severe hypoglycemic events and having to eat constantly. P.S. I am of normal weight and in fact, lose wait rapidly if I dont eat all day. Thank you.

Hello, doctor. this video gives a lot of clarity. My C-peptine is 0.4 and glucose levels are 200+ average. Can i regenerate beta cells through lifestyle change or will i be dependent on artificial insulin for life?

I just saw my new lab test results on Quest. My A1C was 5.3. My fasting glood glucose was 70. My fasting insulin was 3.8. And my c--peptide was .61 and was flagged as 'low'. However, many of the health websites I've seen indicate that normal range is between .5 and 2.0. What are your thoughts on these numbers?

Hi, you need to check the reasons for your hair loss. If you go to a dermatology department, you should also let them know that you have type 1 diabetes. Because some types of hair loss can be caused by autoimmune conditions.
