Mary Passed away on January 19, 2024. R.I.P. Betty is the sole surviving member of the group.

The Shangri-Las were fashion leaders back in 1964. They were the 1st girl group to wear tight pants & boots on stage. Their brilliance came from being so progressive sounding in the 60’s. 👍🏿👍🏿

Oh my, those gals were really young when they passed. Will prompt me to read about them. I also always thought there were 4 in the group but many pics show just 3 so now I’ll be curious to read their bios. I bought all their 45 hits as a young teenager.

Mary Ann had a drug overdose, sadly. Betty did have a family but they would alternate Betty with one of the Ganser sisters.@@revrotunda3206

@@1061andy Yeah it does. But it really does the Motown soind really well. I'm sure it was written or arranged by someone who had actually worked at Motown.
Unfortunately the record company didn't spend enough money on properly promoting the single.

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops.

No, Mary was the lead singer, Betty was not.
Betty Weiss was the original Lead singer, and sang lead on Maybe" (the LP version), "Twist and Shout", "Wishing Well" and "Shout" etc... but Mary sang lead on "Leader of the Pack", and from then on was the lead singer of the group.
The epitome of the ultimate 60's girl group.
I saw them LIVE in 1966 & they were GREAT. "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" is my fave by them.

@@MrEdkern yea, she was real nice, she was the main one I talked to. She was a fan of my fave singer, Mary Wells. She liked working with Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich. She didn't care too much for the hotels/motels, they had to stay in on the road, but she enjoyed our Fla. weather. Just seemed like a regular girl in mu school. Marge & Mary Ann were real nice too.Betty was not there,

At least in the States, they were among my favorites along with Shirelles , Marvelettes, and the Matha and the Vandallas
this was really big in the NY metro area.. not as much elsewhere
I sit here and wonder how in heck's name they "poured" themselves into those trousers & tops! They worked so damn hard with their songs and shows. They deserved so much better.
Never get tired if the shangri-las, I knew Mary Ann Ganser in 1963. Can't find anyone out there that knew her, maybe someday.
Why not stop her drug problems.
She died in 1971 at age 22 from bad heroin.

A friend of mine grew up with them in Cambria Heights, and knew them back when they did shows, he saw them and is a HUGE fan. !!! He got every Shagri-las item signed and today has a HUGE collection. Even went to the Cousin Bruce show in the 80s, which was their very last performance.
I fell in love with Mary Ann in 63, I was 10 and she was 15...she use to come over to Queens where I lived during summer vacation. my babysitter and Mary Ann would make me mad talking to their boyfriends on the phone and ignoring me. Boy do I miss those days.

Still unique today, trailblazers, cute, talented group. Shame that the industry once again ripped off vulnerable kids here. They should have been pound for pound millionaires and their music lives on but who gets all the royalty payments. Not Mary I can tell ya .

Ronettes only had a 1 hit wonder only main reson they are famous was because of phil spector gave them a house hold name plus the head singer was married to him
