RIP Mary Weiss. Truly a sad loss we have. Betty Weiss is the only survivor of the group. Don't hear too much about her. Marge (she changed it to Marguerite) worked for NYNEX in NY. Passed away from breast cancer. Very sad. Mary Ann unfortunately passed away in 1970 (from an overdose???). How incredibly sad. Four lovely girls that came into our lives and gave us music that was great!
Mary Weiss was born the exact same day as me. I found this out a few months ago. We both had sisters named Elizabeth, she died on Libbys birthday. Lots of other coincidences! RIP birthday twin!
In my opinion, the two best girl groups were the Ronettes and the Shangri-Las. Mary and the girls acted tough, but they were such sweethearts in real life. I mourn for this bygone era of music as it will never happen again. Thank God for RUclips.
I just rediscovered them , from the pop music documentary on netflix.. brill house brill building.. great stories.. i grew up hearing them, but i didnt know what they looked like.. mary is a knockout..

Did you know Mary Ann ? I knew her in 63, I was 10 and she was 15.. I layed on her grave a few years after she died. I am old married for 48 years, but still loved her. I could always tell her from her sister Margie.

when the 'oh no, oh no......' clip was all over tiktok I decided to look up the original song (I'd probably heard of the shangri Las at some point I'm my life but if so I didn't remember them, they were before my time, I was born in 86) and until I saw comments saying how young they were like for Mary weiss I'm pretty sure people commented on the walking in the sand video saying she was on 15 in the video for that..... I doubt I'd ever have guessed they were so young! I thought they were probably late 20s early 30s! the videos being black and white probably contributed to that, I have terrible eyesight to begin with & the black & white probably made it harder to see them clear enough to guess their age, but also the way they dressed certainly didn't scream 'teenagers' 🤣 I kind wish they'd appeared on the music scene in my time getting into music, I'd have over waiting for them to release new songs :)
I am just now learning of the passing of Mary Weiss. May her memory forever be a blessing to the world. I’m young, but this group’s music comforted me during times in which I was feeling down. The lyrics, the voices, the instruments…I love it all. God bless them all.
They were talented but they did not "love" the business. Many years later they complained a lot about having to tour and about a lot of other things that are all part of the business.
Ya know,. They really got overlooked. No doubt, like so many bands of that era, but when you listen they really capture a certain sound that dials in the 60's. I tend to think they are a 'musicians band' since many many professionals reference them and that says a lot.
These girls needed Berry Gordy Motown to manage them. Imagine what a superstar Mary Weiss would be today. Definitely she would have followed the same path as Diana Ross. She's hot and so talented.

Not many people know that they were their own managers while they went to High School in Cambria Heights, Queens NY. The most matured of them was the leader and treasurer of the group, she carried the cash they earned from gig to gig. She also had a gun to protect herself and the group while carrying that cash
It wouldn't have worked since Motown to this day never had any major White Artists. He signed a Lady named Chris Clark who was supposed to be Th US's equivalent of Dusty Springfield (RIP), and it didn't happen. They and The Ronettes were major influences on The Late Amy Winehouse. Did you know she attended a Performance Arts High School along with Adele and a UK Singer named Jessi J. In the 1987 Bestseller Rock Star by The Late Jackie Collins there was a Group called Nellie & The Knockers then after Three Years Nellie quits the Music Business to be a Nun. If they ever did a Biopic about The Shangri-Las Tamara Braun (All My Children, General Hospital and Days Of Our Lives) would be perfect as Maryann and UK Soap Actress Michelle Ryan would be perfect as Betty and Michelle can do a US Accent.

Betty was the oldest so I guess that is why her sister Mary and the Gancer twins made her the lead singer. Then just as they were to cut their first record, Betty got pregnant and dropped out of the band for a time. Her sister Mary took her place as lead singer and the Shangra La's never looked back!

I've heard from musician friends who knew guys in the touring bands during those days..that the Shangs were really living up to their "bad girl" image...smoking weed and giving BJs to the band on the bus...if true, i love them even more...billythek from CLE.

I think Mary Ann and Marge were under-credited. Love how Mary Ann looked when she was introduced, somehow she looks really smart to me, with a good sense of humor. Sad that she's gone.

Then she should have chosen a different career. You just don't drift in and out of a group when its convenient for you and let the others fulfill the contractual obligations of the group. I don't see how the other group members allowed Betty to do this.

It appears that way. Sometimes they are not coordinated in their moves and their lips do not match the words to the song they are lip-synching to. Its called not loving what they are doing.

My sister who was 17 in 1964 describes them as a "poor group." They weren't as well rehearsed as The Supremes.
