‘Instant On’ Police Ka Band comparative testing (more detectors compared and retested)

- After many requests the same course has now been retested also with comparison of the Valentice V1Gen2, Escort Redline 360c and Uniden R4.
[Note: The Uniden R8 was not available at the time of testing, but I would expect similar results as shown here by the R4]
Therefore this video is best viewed alongside my earlier video:
“Why is range so important on a radar detector? - ‘Instant On’ Police Ka Band comparative testing…”
Essentially the same Ka gun set up is used. The gun location is also set as close as possible to the last series of tests with the gun angled using a compass to get as close as possible to the previous test setup from the same location.
Detectors used in this test:
Escort Redline 360c
Valentine V1Gen2
Uniden R4
Radenso DS1
Uniden R7 New hardware version (R7forNZ145 firmware - shares the same DSP as US firmware v142)
Uniden R7 Original hardware version (Firmware versions R7forNZ145 firmware - as above and 138 International)
Uniden R3
Uniden DFR9
Uniden DFR7 NZ
Navty P1
Escort Redline Original
Police Ka Radar Source:
ATR Stalker calibrated at 34.700
The radar source used in this test as in the last test series is set up to be remotely operated, and electronically controlled to emit radar for exactly 2 seconds for each activation. This is then followed by a minimum 10 second delay before the gun can be refired.
This test also confirms a lot of consistency with the previous test and confirms the test is consistent and repeatable as far as is possible. So once again, this means multiple test runs can be simulated in a shorter space of time and more detectors and results can be compiled with high confidence.
These results also highlight the sensitivity of detectors when positioned even slightly off angle to the source in the distance. Thereby highlighting one reason why many mobile tests seem to give slightly different results on different runs. Thereby confirming why testing from a moving vehicle requires numerous retests for each detector when making any comparisons.
A summary of all the results can be found towards the end of the video.

Thank you for your time and efforts with testing these radar detectors. Not easy by any stretch of the imagination.
Kudos.
Love these tests. Give me confidence my detector will help!
Should have turned the redline 360c and the valentine around backwards to see if they have a good rear sensitivity on the stew test
What was the distance to source of the longest hit? Great work 👍
Window mount or was the gun set two low range?
Cheers, great testing video
You need to raise that thing up the reason why it’s not picking it up it’s all about probably line of sight, if it’s not high enough up, you’ve got all that stuff in front of you. We need to raise the things up in order for them to get the best performance.
Where I live in North Kentucky USA Ka by the Sheriff's Department's constant on with State Police my unit and R7 picks up fantastic and my unit are four picks up fantastic am I using an or three picks up fantastic so I'm going to stick with you today the escort makes a great product but this doesn't put the range out escort has fantastic features but I had never gotten a 360c new one yet
❤️my DFR9 & DFR7
Where is this?
I’m not understanding your testing methodology. Are you increasing the distance each time you DONT get a KA hit? Why go further away with NO hit rather than move closer ?
This test course is closer in practice to what you might see in the real world. I.e. the locations are greatly affected by surrounding terrain. So if you think it's purely about distance, there is a lot more to it than that. I.e. not just about distance/range. This test also compares the sensitivity of the different detectors to picking up a brief bust of Ka radar at range from different locations. So in this test there is very little difference to choose between any of the top end detectors, despite what their manufacturers might lead you to believe. Range is not everything. Consider also the overall package and features. See also Vortex's latest review on the best radar detectors of 2022, there are similarities to what I have shown here.
Not a good test method. Raise the detector some off the dash and away from the hood.
With the union union R7 or 4 you can have it low you can have it high I think so still pick up fantastic in the US in the midwest Kentucky Ohio Indiana
@@D.A.Jgoons123 Line of sight rule on radar reception.
I test it like that as all detectors are compared fairly. As you can see even changing the mount position or angling the detector slightly off axis can change the comparison.
I also personally prefer to mount low and central to maximise chance of a laser detection. With the right set up and the right know how, you can push the odds of a laser save in your favour. Therefore, there is no 'right way' to mount or set up your detector. I would agree if radar detection is your sole concern then yes mount high would increase your chances of an early long range detection. However, in this test it's more about comparing like with like as far as possible. Here you see an R4 having LNAs only coming out a few meters in front of the R3 or R7 which don't have LNA's The Radenso also has no LNAs but has a horn which is more refined in its design.
However, for daily drive, I still choose the R7 over anything else right now. The features added in R7 149 International probably make it Uniden's best all round detector currently available.
.my redline 360c seems to take over 8 seconds
Really, that's a shame. The 360c on paper is a great detector. However, there really aren't a lot of people recommending it on the RDForum at the moment. Escort really need to get that fixed.
@Mike Fearn I think I meant from start up to ready for action it takes 8 seconds...a lot of guys are very bias against redline 360c and escort in general....i have a redline 360c a r8 and I got two r4s...I use for the ultimate setup a r4 on the front windshield and a r4 on the rear windshield...I will beat down any detector setup any where any time on ka and laser....where I live there's no possibility of k band cops for 100s of miles in any direction..for at least four years I ran my r1 or my original redline on the front windshield amd my max on rhe rear..I learned alot about how this type of setup works..I learned it from the California open road channel on RUclips..this dual radar setup will give information that no other system can..it's by far the best system for rear laser and no one has proven to me any setup can out range a r4 pointing to the rear
Everyone talks about how great they are. I bought a cobra 480i returned next day after passing 8 cops and never went off once except beeps for nothing. I bought an R4, same. I'm literally sitting right in from of 2 cops at a traffic stop. The R4 has never gone off once on any cops. Are the cops in Southern California not using anything other states are? If so, I'm returning this. Theyre basically a waste of money. It never works. A cop told me lat night to return it as theyre useless. Hes right. He said not all cars run radar and most dont. He said California in large cities dont have time to do laser gun on the side of a road.
it’s a radar detector not police detector
Throw a Walmart Honda or Mazda in front of that v1 u wld get all sorts of fun k falses And maybe the ka. Fun figuring it out. NOT
