    No one should feel embarrassed for owning a JEM jr, Epiphone, Squire, or any other budget guitar. There’s so much parity in manufacturing tech today that quality is rarely a concern. Also so many pros have proven that it’s the player, not the price tag on the guitar that determines success. My group used a JR and a PIA on our last two albums and while the PIA is a higher quality guitar, nothing was lost with the JR. 🤘

      @RUclipsisaids69 well , after modeling , fx pedals and all the digital alteration from the source , no they do not. You can make anything sound close to anything else. However , before all that became a thing , you could hear differences in pickups , cabinets , and different densities on certain woods would enhance or diminish sustainability. All that generated from a guitar is still there , however the signal is being changed so much to sound however you want it to sound , so it's irrelevant. In this video , I would say he's probably setting it up with a standard flat eq , no modeling , and just raw amplified output , and yes , you can hear slight differences , the pickups are wound similar , the woods density is similar , so they should sound very close but not identical. So go get ya hearing checked.....

    Well, i thought, come on man. It is a jr. What can be so different?
    It was a whole lot! I was sending it back instantly, buying one of the last true 7V's in 2018.
    Lately, i jammed with a guy on a concert. He was playing a Jr. But you can't imagine how different these are. In a live situation, the 7V (2018) is killig the jr with every single note!
    I really felt bad for him, so we changed after half time of the jamming. This guy was grinning and laughing all the time. He had the day of his life. After that, he asked me how much that one is? I said: Dude, they are no more produced. So his head dropped down. But i instisted that every time he wants to play it, he's welcome. - He was happy again!

    The only downside with the JEMJR is the bridge, they don't last that long before they break. That's why one of the most common upgrades people do with these is to put a Gotoh 1996t bridge.´
    Some people will tell you that an RG350DXZ is a better option for around the same price just because of the bridge.

  • @ThePedroDB
    @ThePedroDB Год назад +2

    A good, fair comparison! I own a range of MII & MIJ Jems (all bought used) that includes 2x Jrs - both 2017 models, one White, one "Hot Pink". I think Jrs are great fun, eminently moddable and (probably) more than sufficient for most 'hobby guitarists' - I include myself in that category.
    I've owned the Jr-WH for about a year. Previous owner upgraded the Trem to a Gotoh GE1996T. I gave it a bit of an "Evo" style cosmetic makeover. The JrSP-PK arrived yesterday. It's in the midst of a 777VSK cosmetic makeover. I'm retaining the stock Trem but adding softer noiseless springs and a fatter Brass Block.
    I'm not a huge fan of the Wizard 3 neck and have slimmed both necks to 17mm @1st Fret & 18mm @12th Fret and reprofiled to mimic the Super Wizard on my 7DBK. A tru-oil finish makes them feel equally as slick and classy as any of the MIJ variants. No stickiness. I also scalloped frets 21-24.
    Some may see the one-piece Maple neck as being inferior but it's the same construction method used on the pre-2005 Jems. Admittedly the OG 777 models probably used Quarter, rather than Plain, sawn Maple.
    Of the 3 Jrs I've had experience of, the fretwork has been exemplary. Smooth perfectly finished fret ends and well levelled. All they needed was a bit of a polish.
    If the Jrs were my only Jems, I might consider a pup upgrade. However, I do like the tones available from the Quantums. I haven't had a chance to audition the Infinity pups in the Pink Jr yet.
    The Jem 70V-SFG used to be my "Best Bang for the Buck" Jem. Especially used. However, prices have escalated recently. A used Jr can be an absolute used bargain and made to feel and play far above it's price point with a bit of home fettling.

    Great comparison. I agree with you on the visuals. Not just because it looks better but it's indeed more practical to have flat white inlays. I recently got a very nice Ibanez SA guitar from 2011. It's a fantastic playing and sounding instrument but it has those abalone dot inlays. They look cool but playing it in my room with dimmed lights basically makes them disappear. The fretboard looks almost like it has no inlays at all.
    On the Jem Jr: I don't gel with the Quantum pickups. They compress too much and big chords sound very washy, lacking clarity/definition. They do sound cool when just playing single notes and power chords, though. The biggest downside is the vibrato system. Sadly, the baseplate seems to be some weak alloy. It doesn't hold up well on the long run and either needs a full replacement or you have to completely lock it. Otherwise it just won't stay in tune because the knife edges wear out. I don't understand why Ibanez still puts these things on their guitars instead of their far superior Ibanez Edge Zero II.

    I just bought a Jem Jr in White , Doing a overhaul on it , Bought Utopia pickups for it , push push volume pot , not push pull , 5 way switch 4 pole , Gotoh FR copy , and a blue/white/black marble pickguard , pickups are going to be split blue and black with black pole pieces , single will be blue with nickle poles , could not get black but I can paint them with some black enamel , the volume and tone knobs are strat style in blue with white letters. Going to get some flat black locking tuners as well. So it will have a custom Jem look , and a PIA sound. Also sending the neck off and getting it scalloped fully , with a shallow scallop on 1 to 12 and slightly deeper on 13 to 24. Probably will color the petals on the vine inlay on the regular dot positions only and just the petals a translucent blue. Might paint the claw with enamel in blue also. Whole white / blue / black setup. Should look sharp and play well I hope.

    • @ThePedroDB
      @ThePedroDB Год назад

      the Jr neck isn't unfinished. It has a thin layer of clear coat / lacquer applied to it. Unfinished necks need oil to prevent issues happening through atmospheric moisture changes. You can play the neck a lot and rely on the oils from your hands or treat it with something like Tung oil. 4 coats of Tung oil. A day drying between applications and (as you said) smoothing with 0000 Steel Wool between coats produces the most amazing, durable, non-sticky finish 👍

    • @user-fb2jb3gz1d
      @user-fb2jb3gz1d Год назад +2

      If it does get out of tune.........
      1) make sure the locking nut screws are tight (the screws that hold the nut in place)
      3) make sure the neck bolts are tight.
      4) make sure the knife edges on the trem where it pivots on the studs, are not flattened. It needs to have a sharp edge so it can return back to it's level.
      If it is flattened, just get a file and sharpen it back to a point. Check it when you change your strings. And NO........the edges don't get flat by adjusting the string height or intonating it.
      5) as it gets worn, the springs need to be changed. And don't put them in a v pattern......that's just ridiculous.
      When you have these things working, you can get all Vai crazy with the bar and it will stay in tune.....

    • @ThePedroDB
      @ThePedroDB 8 месяцев назад

      @@user-fb2jb3gz1d Well said. I pretty much agree with everything you said. However, I would add that knife edges shouldn't be razor sharp - or they will be more prone to burring. Gently rounded without burrs is optimum. More "Butter Knife" than "Steak knife". They will function perfectly and require less ongoing maintenance.
      Speaking of maintenance, people should check the health of their knife edges and posts every 6-12 months IMO. All Trems wear out eventually. It doesn't take long to do and issues that affect tuning stability can be resolved quickly..
      The Standard DL Trem can have some premature wear due to the softer metals used:
      1) String slippage at the Zinc saddles may be 'a thing'. No real fix for that apart from new saddles. I haven't had those issues with my Jrs but have had all sorts of problems with Floyd Rose Specials (even from new)
      2) A good mod is to fit OG Floyd Rose posts (not the one's for the 'Special..). They fit the Standard DL inserts and are made from much harder material. A metallurgist explained to me one day that this should reduce knife edge wear compared to having two 'softer' metals rubbing against each other. It may be fiction but my Jrs have had zero tuning stability issues since.
      A few cheap mods I've made to the Standard DL Trem have transformed it for me. Not necessary but worth considering:
      1) A fat 33mm Brass Block (£20-ish) give the Jr the Natural resonance/sustain that it's missing. My Jrs now sustain longer than my Edge equipped Jems. I've timed the note decay and the Jr improved by 50%
      2) A set of Gotoh Power Springs (PSP) are great quality and slightly higher tension. At £6/set (eBay..) they are unbeatable and give perfect return to zero point. I've fitted them to many of my guitars now
      3) A push-fit original Floyd Rose Tremolo Arm & Socket (£25-ish) saves all the faff of Trem Arm coming loose with use. Adjust the tension initially via a small set-screw and that's it. Even easier than the arrangement on the Gotoh GE1996T

    My suggestion is what I did. JemJr ($500usd), Evolution or Utopia ($280usd for the set), Gotoh 1996t Tremolo ($150usd). Actually prefer the Gotoh/Utopia to Edge/Evolution but the 7V still has the superior neck. Theoretically you could find a used Jem7v/Tod10/PIA neck around $400-600usd but at that point you're creeping up to losing the value from a modded jemjr. Good review overall.

    *JEM Jr.* (Made in Indonesia, 2015(?) i.e. possibly the very first year)
    + Same "quirky yet understated" look as in this video
    + Fret ends are perfect, for the price (nothing sticks out)
    + Seems quite solid (few accidents have caused only minor dents)
    + True Single Coil, but...
    -- ...quite thin/plonky sounding vs. JEM7V or Stratocaster.
    * Same Quantum humbuckers (Medium hot? Relatively bright?)
    * Relatively cheap, at least used to be... Of course, a fixed bridge tends to be
    the recommended way for maximum price/quality
    - Ibanez STD DL is relatively light and thin bridge, sometimes unwanted resonances
    -- Ibanez STD DL isn't as stable and durable as Edge (Made in Japan by GOTOH)
    -- Ibanez STD DL has Fine Tuners (quite stiff ones...) in the same location as Floyd Rose
    i.e. much closer close to the palm than Edge does. This may or may not bother you.
    - Ibanez STD DL, at least this one, has crappy whammy bar fixing (not a tight fit)...
    + ...Which can be easily replaced with _OFR's Whammy bar & counterpart_ (Made in
    Germany by Schaller). If I remember correctly, posts are located differently from FR.
    _GOTOH GE1996T_ and _Ibanez Edge_ *might* fit? Both are expensive, but
    very good. *But...* at least GOTOH has much thicker posts --> woodwork needed.
    So, different pickups but same basic types (HSH) in same physical locations as JEM7V. Also, same wiring scheme.
    Underneath is Resistance in kOhms & Inductance in Henrys (just because my DMM has it), in all 5 Switch Positions. Everything's stock, measured from 3 m (~10 ft) guitar cable, Volume & Tone at maximum:
    1.) Neck HB alone 7.38k (3.47H)
    2.) N* and M in parallel 2.17k (0.92H)
    3.) Middle SC alone 5.17k (2.17H)
    4.) B* and M in parallel 2.18 k (0.92H)
    5.) Bridge HB alone 7.35 k (3.48H)
    *) Positions 2 & 4: Coil Split (HB's inner coil and Middle SC as Parallel HB).
    So, same wiring as Stratocaster (5-way SSS), except HSH pickups.
    Humbuckers alone propably have the typical wiring, i.e. coils in series.
    These pickups have Ceramic Magnets, so direct comparison to
    traditional Stratocaster, Les Paul etc. is likely to be bit missleading.
    JEM7V's SC has AlNiCo magnets and much higher resistance (if
    my memory serves right...). So, it differs both from JEM Jr. (Ceramic)
    and Vintage Strat (low Resistance, just like JEM Jr.).
    JEM7V's HB's (Evolutions) have Asymmetric coils & ceramic magnets.
    PS.
    Resistance doesn't always tell the "hotness" of a pickup. Voltage (AC, mV) does better job for it, but is more difficult to measure (with regular DMM).
    PPS.
    *Ibanez RG* with same neck Joint (AANJ) has identical shape (silhouette). RG's just doesn't have "Monkey Grip" and "Lions Claw".
    Also, most of them don't have "Tree of Life" or same bridge (Ibanez Edge). Necks vary. For example, RG 655 has that ultra-super-crazy-paperthin neck.
    RG-lineup has much more variation (colors, woods, fixed bridge, active pickups, scale length, 9-string etc.). Ibanez PIA is very similar to JEM and some of the Japanese High-End RG's.

      On your PPS, I have an RG450DX and yes, it's essentially the exact same guitar as the JR without the grip and claw cutout. Same pickups, bridge, and woods. And in most places priced nearly the same. But, yeah, the whole lineup has quite a bit of variation to choose from. Love my RGs. I also have an RG7620 which is essentially a Universe without the cosmetic enhancements. Someone else can have it when I'm dead and gone, and only then. 🤣

      Sorry but that's not correct. The Volute is the thicker area behind the nut on the MIJ guitars. The carved heel joint is simply a carved heel joint. Ibanez calls theirs the "All Access Neck Joint". It's often abbreviated to AANJ

    I've got a Jem Jr and I really like it. Took me a bit to figure out the floyd rose (this was my first guitar with one of these) but once I got that all figured out I really felt like I could make whatever sound I wanted. It plays really smooth and I can play something quick and light, or heavy and chugging. For whatever reason I feel like the frets are bigger than most guitars and I don't have very long fingers so that's a little awkward, but just in terms of sound and playability, I'm a fan.

    I bought a yellow model (infinity pickups) earlier this year. I replaced the stock tremolo with a Gotoh 1996t and that made a large difference in the tone and sustain compared to the stock bridge. A few mods were needed, but they were minimal.

    • @Morgan_Illusion
      @Morgan_Illusion 10 месяцев назад

      hey, i now the question Sounds kinda dumb (im new to electric guitar), but what do you mean in ''I replaced the stock tremolo'' What is a stock tremolo, and what mods, or how did you add ths few mods?

    • @r2skyvader
      @r2skyvader 10 месяцев назад

      @@Morgan_IllusionStock means the one that came with it from the factory. Mods is short for modifications. I replaced the stock tremolo posts with Floyd Rose posts so as not to have to drill larger holes for the Gotoh ones while keeping better quality metal to match the new trem. I had to dremel out a bit of wood in the cavity, but that was minimal.

    I'm in love with my jem jr. My only complaints are the fretboard appears a little too light (might just be mine, I have oiled it) and I wish the pickguard was pearl

    • @user-fb2jb3gz1d
      @user-fb2jb3gz1d Год назад

      If you use steel wool on the fretboard (yes I said use steel wool on the fretboard), it will dull a bit but then when you put some oil, it will get dark. You may have to put a few coats of oil, let it sink in. But it will get darker.
      I've been doing this to my Jems for over 20 years and nothing has happened to my necks.

    • @ThePedroDB
      @ThePedroDB Год назад

      Easy fix. Swap the pickguard (& trussrod cover) and treat the fretboard with tung oil. You could also treat the fretboard with Ebony stain. I've done that with both mine. They look more like dark rosewood than ebony now - but that's much better to my eye

    One thing you might want to consider with your 7v is that your paint is already yellowing out and when that decal starts crapping out, you'll have a contrasting spot on the body which will look pretty crappy because you'll have 2 shades of white.

    • @ThePedroDB

      I own the 70V-SFG, which is the predecessor to the 7VP. Much as I think the Jrs are great fun, they may need a little attention to feel, play and sound at their best. I've owned my 70V for a decade and it has been used most days. The quality of woods and hardware used makes it well worth the extra money. Mine played perfectly straight out of the box. It's the equal of any of my Japanese Jems.
      The Jem 10th Anniversary is my 'unicorn' Jem. I'd love one but can't justify the price tag...

      The Jr is such a great modding platform, you could just fit your own sutainer to it. Modding a £2k+ guitar (7V) can be far more intimidating and ultimately may affect it's retained value. In such cases, fully reversible mods are often the way to go..
