It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like being in the audience that night. Hearing a voice like Joan’s at its very peak, I bet the sound literally filled the vast hall with perfect coloratura technique. Absolutely incredible and absolutely unique.
Amazing understanding of bel canto style and phrasing from Sargent here. He really gives Sutherland a great scope for expression and rubato rarely heard with other conductors. Very surprising find.
First heard this years ago and it still gives me chills and thrills. And tears. You can hear why they called her “La Stupenda.” The voice of the 20th century.
Though I think Joan Sutherland made a huge mistake in not retiring from opera at a much earlier stage as the voice had lost it's former brilliance, during her prime as heard here she was technically speaking at least, incomparable, not only in the 20th c but I would bet in any century. I wonder how many of those in the audience realised that they were hearing the most incredible and glorious bel canto, possibly of all time!
@@paullewis2413: I read that she wished to retire in 1986. However they had signed contracts through 1990 and decided to honor them . I heard her three career final NORMA performances and was glad she honored her commitments. I did not feel cheated in the least. These were not performances from some vain glorious over the hill soprano but an honest attempt to perform and interpret the role. There was nothing that reeked of desperation like the Callas 1973-1974 tour. There was plenty of reason to acknowledge why she had been LA STUPENDA!
este sonido es único.......................me refiero....a su voz................pues...su voz es única............a los 34 años..............era una bomba imparable......como imparable fue hasta su retirada.....a los 64 años...............................un prodigio de ser humano....vocal y anímico y luchador.........sin precedentes....................

I think, being old enough to have seen him, that Malcolm Sargent was a very underrated conductor.

That upper register - pure magic!
Dear God. That VOICE!
Perfection, beautiful, glorious, magnificent, there are not enough superlatives to describe this singing....La Stupenda indeed.💖🌹👏

Loses all the power
Totally agree. Exciting accelerandi and rubato. This is gold!
Wow!
divina .
This is before her vowels got so uniform and her diction got cloudy. Like the giulini Don Giovanni. Excellent.
@stevewoodland464: Ah yes, if only everyone could be perfect as your ego. Then Woody you could put a smile on your face.
