Susan, I think that if you had learned the chorus for the mad scene, the sheer emotion on stage would have impelled you to respond. You'd be so caught up in what Mme Callas was delivering that you'd probably have sung viscerally, without thought of technique but with a huge amount of empathy.
@@patrickgallagher3513I just listened again! You know, Regnava nel silenzio is about Lucia seeing a ghost. By the end of the opera, she has completely lost her grip on sanity, because she had to marry someone other than her soulmate. Maria Callas had me crying from her very first note of the Mad Scene. I wonder what an impression it was for the public to hear that role the first time sung by a voice of such size and darkness. No Lilly Pons, or Toti dal Monte... Must have been a shock! Callas gave back to the role the dramatic weight it deserves.
Lily and Toti were wonderful singers. Its hard for me to hear the vulnerability in a bigger voice. Pons' sound had the fragility Lucia needs. Callas sings this role very well though and its very wonderful to hear her sing in the correct vocal fach. I'm sure we would have enjoyed her genius much longer if she would've stayed in the coloratura repertoire which suited her voice the best.
@@jimbuxton2187 Unfortunately for her from a vocal health standpoint though, her voice did have an ostensibly dramatic quality though (which is to say colour not weight). So it’s understandable why she had to establish herself in heavier rep first. I think if someone had paved the way for her first, she would have specialized in heavier coloratura rep right from the start.
@@jimbuxton2187 Sure thing that other singers did wonderful Lucias. My point is something different: how was the role meant by Donizetti? There is such an interesting characterization of the voice of Fanny Tacchinardi-Persiani, for whom Donizetti wrote Lucia, which was described as a high Mezzo-soprano with an extension to high e and high f. But the best part of her voice seemed to be in the middle with the possibility for powerful accents in the lower register. The sound was described as sweet with a bitter note. Sounds not like a high coloratura of the type Pons, dal Monte, Galli-Curci etc. Sounds a bit like a description of Callas' voice to me.
@@tenorette2003 ...I'm sure you know the mad scene was originally in F. I don't see how a lower tessitura voice could handle that. Even callas as high as her voice was did it in Eb....thank you for your interesting perspective though....( makes one wonder....sweet with a bitter note would be more like Mesple or Robin to me! ) I don't find any sweetness in the callas tone... in her interpretation maybe but not her tone. That's why she was such a convincing Turandot!
@@jimbuxton2187 Thanks for your answer. Yes, the Mad scene was originally written in F, but I don't think it was sung in this key. It's reported that Donizetti had to transpose even Arias from "L' elisir" downwards for Tacchinardi-Persiani. I think it's the same case as "Casta diva" which was written in G but never sung by Pasta, the original Norma, in this key. Another point is, that it's doubtful that the 19th century divas did the endings on sustaind high notes we expect today. Presumably they touched those high notes in cadenzas and abellishments.
*Some people think Callas didn't have a big voice, but in the early days she was frequently hired for the heaviest Wagnerian roles. A year before this performance, Callas' voice drowned out soloists (including Del Monaco!), chorus, and orchestra, in the famous high Eb she interpolated in performances of Aida. And here she is singing Lucia! The audience probably did not know what to think of such a large voice singing Lucia.*
@@Shahrdad I remember you saying you asked Siepi about Callas voice right? Did he say her voice was bigger than Nilsson's? Or did he compared her voice to other Wagnerians sopranos' voices?
No. He said her “fat” voice was at least as big as his, but his wife added that in the 1965 Toscas at the Met, it was sometimes hard to hear her. This goes along with what Sutherland said, that it was a much bigger voice before the weight loss. Bonynge called it colossal, saying it poured out of her the way Flagstad’s did.
