Professional Japanese translator here! I've been following the story since the first video. Here's some additional info based on the article and additional research on my end that might enlighten you: 1) The owner was Kodera Yuuji. The person interviewed was not necessarily his son, but an unnamed surviving male in his family. 2) After contacting a Japanese legal interpreter I'm close with, it's likely that whoever owns the property the statue is on now owns the statue, too. Unless there was something in Kodera-san's will specifying who it would go to, the acting property owner has it. 3) The male interviewed indicated that Kodera-san probably would've touched up the statue with paint himself, but didn't indicate they were interested in doing so. Unfortunately, the building on the property looks like it's pretty old and not particularly wealthy. It does not seem like anyone there would have the money to save the statue. After all, it doesn't just need a paint touch-up. Sadly, I'm not in Japan at the moment and may not return for a few years. Otherwise, I'd offer to reach out to the family, or visit and stay a few days to talk with them about their interest (and enjoy myself). I've never passed the place, but I did live in Aichi and took a few trips to those mountain areas in Mie, just shy of Nabari (which is really close). It wouldn't really be a lot of trouble to talk with them. We'd just have to convince them we mean well and simply want to see the smiles of the people there and around the world. Personally, I don't want to see that hand crack off and fall into the road. The people around there (in my experience) drive like maniacs and the mountains get really foggy in the morning during the spring and summer.
I mean I could've been a professional Japenese translator. If I lived in Japan. I mean I am not English or Japenese but I know alot of English. So it's a piece of cake for me.
@@EmeraldEtherious - I mean, as long as you know Japanese well, too. Considering I've seen professional translations in official products that carry some pretty amateur mistakes (Heatran in Pokemon XY's main city), it really depends on who is hiring you and possibly who is checking your work. But I can't judge your experience. I became a professional translator before living in Japan, but I also spent years learning the linguistics and most of my childhood immersed in it. There are learned cultural cues you can't pick up from reading a language textbook or living in Japan alone, and I'm not talking about tidbots you learn watching anime. I mean weird things like knowing how to hand out papers the culturally accepted way and how that affects what someone might have to say to you regarding your position, or the language you would switch between when hosting a party or wedding, or the kind of audible linguistic slurs used specifically over the phone or by a store associate/cashier/clerk regardless of politeness or distance level between speaker and listener. These verbal cues, including audible ones, are often hidden in plain sight in Japanese text. Translating word for word, based solely on aspect, tense, etc. is going to probably be enough to net you a job if your employer is just as amateur, but it won't really help you as a professional if you intend to translate essays, scientific literature, pop culture literature/manga/anime/games, etc. or be crazy and go into government-level interpretation.
this statue, which some will see as a pointless statue, has a story so deep and touching, it will make a great documentary or movie.... this statue must be in the new sonic movie!!!!
I would love it if the movie ended with the people of the small town building a statue in honor of the hedgehog who saved them that looked just like this one. It's not likely but it's nice to think about.
*his swirling spirit stares once again at his statue, arm pumped skyward. he admires the smile shot across the blue hedgehog's face. he floats towards him, placing his coporial form gently atop the snowboard. the share a moment looking out into the verdant forests of Japan.* "thank you hedgehog, you've brought many of us great joy, and you will continue that for generations too come." *he is at peace, and with the swiftness of the wind, he disappears*
The story of how it got there and why he placed it there got me teary eyed. I found this channel through the first video about the statue, I'm glad the story is still continuing. I hope they can restore it.
We need sega of japan to ask the family about the statue and have the statue removed (with consent) and then have it professionaly restored, put back, and also have some kind of shrine built around it for protection of the statue in harsh weather conditions, it would be a good memorium for the previous owner while being a good tourist spot.

I guess the Sonic Statue mystery is finally solved, I really hope the statue is restored and get to see it in person one day. I want to know, can I get there from England to the area of the statue location? Like which airport do I take?
If you look at the landmark for "the mysterious sonic statue" on Google maps, they'll give you all the nearest airports, cities and communities. Airport wise, it really won't matter because the location is so remote that it's roughly as far away from all airports. Fair warning, it's in the middle of nowhere and you'd be likely spending a decent amount of money to get to it if you don't drive based on what people have said.
@@thebrocode5554 If you have a phone, it's a landmark on Google maps and many other sat nav apps now. As long as you follow it, it'll take you like 10 minutes from the nearby town.
They should sell little mini statues with suction cups at the flat end of the snowboard so you could stick him to something like at the original arcade!
To think something as seemingly silly as "there's a statue of Sonic the Hedgehog riding a snowboard somewhere in the mountains of Japan" could have such a touching story behind it. Goes to show that even something little or strange could mean something so much more in the story of someone else's life.
I hope the statue gets restored, but it should also be returned to that exact spot immediately after. Restore it in a way that it can last outdoors for a long time. It’s only a win-win situation for both tourists and the owners of the statue. I don't know how the Japanese generally feel when it comes to restoration or if there are any traditions against property being tampered with, but to refuse restoration and leave it be would only result in tragedy. I really hope the owners will agree to let it be fixed.
Am I the only one who thinks it shouldn't be left outside? It's a one-of-a-kind historical item. After all, with all the extra exposure the statue's getting, it's becoming more and more likely that somebody's going to steal it. As Indiana Jones once said, it belongs in a museum! >:-(
The story behind this just gets warmer and warmer. I feel like (with the family's blessing of course!) restoring the statue and making it a staple with a longer life outdoors would really be a wonderful thing to do in Kodera-san's memory. It would be a positive memory for the family, and I believe seeing the process of that statue restored would not only reflect positively on them, but many who had interest as well! I really hope everything goes well. With so many troublesome things in the world today, and in the past, it would be a positive work of art. Something that's just there for enjoyment, like he wanted. 🦔💙
@@JHR_2002 It's great to see people as excited as I am about this topic as here we have some almost forgotten media being brought to people's attention. It's amazing. I'm hoping to make a video covering this myself at some point, though I doubt people will find it as informative as Badnik Mechanic makes it seem.
This has been a wild ride, I'm glad to know that it belonged to such a good guy, someone who had a loving family, and that it's purpose was to bring people together. Even if nothing else should happen with this, I would still feel satisfied having heard such a wholesome story.
If it gets saved, I hope a replica or even the same original will be replaced there (perhaps in a protective container or something) with a plaque memorialising the owner.
If anything's getting left there, it'd better be a replica. Leaving a one-of-a-kind historical item outside is just plain stupid. Even in a glass cage, it'll be exposed to direct sunlight and the colours will fade, and someone's bound to steal it at some point.
Thank you so much for covering the story on this statue and for making videos so quickly whenever new information surfaced. This was so awesome to follow along with, and I'm happy that the mystery is now solved. I hope that the family will allow the statue to be moved and restored, but I'll be just as happy if it remains in the same spot with some new paint. Again, thanks for covering this amazing story!
Idea: There should be a building be built near the statue that could be used for a sega themed resting zone with the statue moved in the lobby. Also, it should be near the house so the kids of the owner could not go far. This might sound weird, trust me I think its a great idea. Edit: This is so sad. Alexa play God Only Knows. Edit 2: Wait, my comment has been highlighted. THANK YOU BANDIK!!!😁
Hey Badnik! I don’t know if you heard this already(you probably have), but the Sonic livestream just shouted you out and talked about the statue again. Hopefully that Sonic statue will get repaired or something.
This is slowly becoming one of the most heartfelt, emotional stories involving Sonic I've ever watched. I can't wait to see where this story goes. I hope they can restore the statue and it becomes a national landmark.
This has been one of the coolest stories to follow here on youtube. I definitely want to see the statue restored, however, I think it should reside where it currently stands. I am all for it being taken somewhere to be restored as long as it's brought back. The story of this statue is quite touching and goes beyond being just a piece of video game history. The man who owned this put it here so people could come together, and now it's brought so many people around the world together to find out the story behind it after his passing. In a way, as cheesy as it sounds, it stands to be a symbol of coming together to do something really cool. That's something very special that should always be remembered in my opinion. Cheers to everyone out there that put time and effort into this mystery, it absolutely paid off in a strangely touching way. Thanks!
Hey, I’ve been watching this saga since your first video and this is the coolest thing ever. It is awesome to see how one person, yourself, can make such an impact on something. :)
Aweeee, this is so sweet and amazing! So much heartwarming information that just makes me smile and brings happy tears to my eyes. I hope Mr. Kedera is happy with what his statue had done, and I hope his family lives a peaceful life! I will definitely be part of the donation to fix the Sonic Statue. It's a part of history now--who wouldn't??
I didn’t think the story could get any better until I heard this. It’s sad to hear the owner passed but I’m glad we are getting closer to helping restore the story.
I've always had been a big Nintendo fan but over time I became a big fan of gaming in general. I love that lots of people are finding almost forgotten gaming stuff and even restoring them. Sometime in the future I will work for a game company and I will still love to see all the fans find and restore stuff. I really love how many people came to figure out why the statue is there and found out who it belongs to. I really love how he saved the statue and allowed people to see it. May he rest in peace.
What... the hell just happened? I was just thinking about this subject then 2 minutes later I get a notification for this video. That’s crazy. PS: I am really excited for the future of the statue if it is to be restored.
Well, I can't speak for the original commenter, but that doesn't have to mean the _original_ owner. Also, private restoration is probably also feasible.
That's up to the family. At the end of the day, it's their decision. I'm sure they would most likely agree with giving the statue a makeover/touch up, but simply taking the statue away? I think it's pretty easy to assume the statue is a memory of their father and they closely resonate with it. I wouldn't want to rob them of that. At the end of the day, we all want the statue to be saved! I think you should reword your comment. I don't want you to deal with any backlash 😅
AHHHHHHH IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS! I wanted to know more about this story since I've seen the first video , and from the start, I was so excited to see what they will do with this statue
I would have loved to meet Mr Kodera when he was alive, he sounds like a very kind man, he’s one of those guys who you hear about in little wholesome stories, it especially annoys me that mean and awful people may last longer than Mr Kodera, his family must have had a really hard time saying goodbye, I’m sure that when the founder of Sega started making slot machines in the early(ish) 1900s, they never would have thought that a blue hedgehog would bring people so close together, this story fills me with many emotions, Mr Kodera you will be missed ❤️
This was a great bit of history, I learned about the statue with the first video and now the story has an ending of sorts. Hopefully it gets restored! A small figure of the statue would be super neat too, it's a great looking Sonic.
It's good to know the statue wasn't owned by some corporation that just threw it there, someone liked it enough to save it and actually loved and take care of it. Whatever happens now, i can be happy knowing the statue was never truly forgotten by everyone.
Badnik Mechanic, I looked in the comments and one of your subscribers, Joshua Young, has a brilliant ass idea. If the statue gets restored, dedicate it as a plaque to Mr. Kodera. A petition NEEDS to be signed about this.
I've never been a huge Sonic fan, I never cared for the games or shows. This is different, though. I've been following this story since your first video about it and I can appreciate your video archives on the topic. It went from some local mystery to a heartfelt story. I too want this statue to live on for ages, I wish to see it fully restored to its former glory in honor of the kids' father.
Wow, The news outlet Jtown did exactly what I suggested in the comments of the other video! I had a feeling the dirt road next to the statue had something to do with the owner. Glad we finally found out who owned it though sad that the owner passed away.
I'm happy we got more answers with this statue. Hopefully the family would be ok with the fans crowdfunding to restore it and place it back, I'd love to go over there whenever I go to Japan.
I think a good compromise (if the family doesn't want the statue to ultimately be moved away from this location) would be to get it both restored and have a proper protective shine/enclosure and base built around it. I wouldn't want all the work of having it restored/painted be ruined if it's just going to be left out in the rough weather again for years to come. That way it can honor the original owner plus bring more people there to enjoy it. They could even make a plaque dedicated to remembering the owner.
Also, my idea for the whole restoring thing, based on the previous owner's feelings towards the statue, would be to Restore it with long-lasting materials, then put it in the same place on a pedestrial of some kind, with like an engraving honoring the previous owner, and putting like a little roof on top of it so the rain/snow doesn't affect it directly that often. And also, give it maintenance every two years or so. Then, the statue would maintain it's former glory, while also still being an honorable possession for the family of the deseased owner.
It's crazy to see how much rapid development this Sonic statue story has received to the point where even Japanese news outlet have reported. I...feel incredibly content and satisfied with this. It feels like this is the ending of this story all things considered. Epilogue would be whether or not the statue is fixed or nothing happens and it sadly withers away, but man, at least I'm just thankful for how supportive Sonic fans and everyone have have been with this. It's a bit weird to say, but I'm honestly grateful to say I was alive to see this mystery unfold to its conclusion here. Thanks for all the updates, Luty!
This is so satisfying to hear! The mystery is solved. Rest in peace Mr. Kodera. I am sure his presence will always be felt with this statue. Now let's see how much further we can take this! (Also, plaque for Mr. Kodera at the location perhaps?)

Hello there! Nice seeing you in this video.
@@BouncyGlowsMusicRoom Well hello Bouncy! Great seeing you here too. What do you think of this video by the the way?
Everyone: we NEED to save the animals quick!!!
Me: yeah bit there is a sonic statue in the woods.
Rest in peace Mr. Kodera!
Thank you for giving us such an awesome gaming mystery!
R.I.P Mr. Kodera
"Father of the Sonic statue"
Rest in chilli doggies.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Kodera
I would donate to get it fixed

Idea: There should be a building be built near the statue that could be used for a sega themed resting zone with the statue moved in the lobby. Also, it should be near the house so the kids of the owner could not go far. This might sound weird, trust me I think its a great idea.
Edit: This is so sad. Alexa play God Only Knows.
Edit 2: Wait, my comment has been highlighted. THANK YOU BANDIK!!!😁
To think, a fan favorite obscurity is now well known by officials themselves. Crazy
Love the updates!! Keep up the amazing work! 💙💙💙 🔵💨
I hope they can restore the statue and it becomes a national landmark.
i agree, its very emotional and it deserves to be one of the landmarks.
Thanks!
It's so cool you helped set all this in motion!
I can just imagine a random guy going to the family's house with some equipment and a replacement nose.
I love how you keep saying "yeah i probably won't make a video on this again for a while" and then BAM huge revelation
YES!
Oh, this is so much more then the title makes it out to be.
I've been enjoying this story for ages. It's so nice that recently the statue's story has been going viral and finally there's a conclusion.
What... the hell just happened? I was just thinking about this subject then 2 minutes later I get a notification for this video. That’s crazy.
PS: I am really excited for the future of the statue if it is to be restored.
Can you think about my promotion, please?
Hoorayy! (Now if the Owner is willing to give sega the statue it can be saved!)
you sound like you haven't watched the whole video making you look rude.
Well, I can't speak for the original commenter, but that doesn't have to mean the _original_ owner. Also, private restoration is probably also feasible.
It's still valid just replace 'owner' with their family.
After learning all this, i want it to remain there.
Just being taken care of so it can last longer.
I am very exited about this statue! I mean the story and everything is so awesome! Your channel is amazing!
I'm so happy that this has gotten so big. Wholesome as heck too.
I am going to soon start sculpting a mini statue for my bedroom and if I ever finish, I will send you a picture.
AHHHHHHH IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS! I wanted to know more about this story since I've seen the first video , and from the start, I was so excited to see what they will do with this statue
This story made me tear up. After all these years, I'm glad the Sonic statue is still leading us to Mr. Kodera, it seems like he was a good person.
This whole story kind of wrapped up beautifully. Wow. I started crying. I hope the family allows it. It’d be amazing to visit one day
The story keeps getting more and more interesting with every video. Keep up the good work!
I can’t believe non of us thought to go up the road where the sonic statue is. Wow.
It's good to know the statue wasn't owned by some corporation that just threw it there, someone liked it enough to save it and actually loved and take care of it. Whatever happens now, i can be happy knowing the statue was never truly forgotten by everyone.
The Original owner that passed was a good man :) May he rest in peace
This is more historical than the Notre Dame
Badnik Mechanic, I looked in the comments and one of your subscribers, Joshua Young, has a brilliant ass idea. If the statue gets restored, dedicate it as a plaque to Mr. Kodera. A petition NEEDS to be signed about this.
I loved you're discussion on this once mysterious statue! If I ever go to Japan I will definitely look for this!
What roller coaster of emotions this story was, I hope it gets restored and out back in the mountains
Damn I didn’t expect to such a heart warming story to be around the statues origins
Just found this series in my recommended list and it has been a fascinating ride the whole way through.
Let's hope they restore the statue by Sonic 3 & Knuckles' birthday! In fact, those mini statues you spoke about, I would love one!
Woohoo! It’s so good when people come to these discoveries. Awesome work man!
And RIP mr kodera.
Can you believe that your small channel made so much of a big impact?
This story has reached legend status, what a fun ride! Rest in peace, Mr. Kodera ♥️
Imagine if you found out that people all around the world were interested in something you family owns
We may be answer to most question
But there’s still one question
“Where’s his nose?”
Wow, I'm quite excited to see if this restored, a mini version to be sold would be amazing also rest in peace Mr. Kodera
And so... Another chapter in history turns its last page. In the multitude of things, this will evoke happiness; a blessing
Wow this all came quick and it was a cool narrative with cliffhangers along the way.
Sounded like a nice guy to visit, I hope the statue gets restored at some point.
This is actually a very heartwarming story. I never really liked Sonic, but this gives a new significance to this Mascot.
indeed, a sad story that shouldnt be forgotten.
😂
Next find out the owner of the bill chipher statue
I just started watching the Sonic statue videos yesterday and then this comes out today. Beautiful just beautiful.
A desk sonic woods statue would be awesome I would put it on top the bush in my garden and let flowers grow around it
This is so satisfying to hear! The mystery is solved.
Rest in peace Mr. Kodera. I am sure his presence will always be felt with this statue.
Now let's see how much further we can take this!
(Also, plaque for Mr. Kodera at the location perhaps?)
I only have two words to define this video
Significant development
