Why Pay for College When the Same Lessons Are Free on YouTube?

  • Almost everything you learn in college ha a RUclips video around the same topic. Besides things like medical degrees and law school, the vast majority of the college education is accessible to anybody with an internet connection. The #1 variable keeping colleges relevant is the brand perception they have been able to build over the years from when there were no RUclips, or finance podcasts to listen to. You had to go to college to get information about those things but now there are thousands of people giving that knowledge away for free, you just won't have the piece of paper saying you learned it at a school.

    College is propaganda and a lot of the people who evangelize it vs online learning largely do so from a deep routed bias of what worked for them. The College myth is in so many ways a scam but if you say that you're a "charlatan" meanwhile we have a $1 Trillion Dollar Debt around Student Loans... that's the reality. And we have very little as a country to show for it and its marketed as this great investment. It is if you're going to be a doctor, lawyer or nurse or engineer... which only make up 7M combined people in a country of 330M at any given time...

    STEM degrees aren’t a joke. The degree or university basically vouches for you saying that you have been trained with basic engineering and scientific principles in order to help society in one way or another. Specially if you’ll be dealing with public safety. The degree path should be shorter, though, for sure.

    • @mrknarf4438
      @mrknarf4438 3 года назад +1

      Shorter and more in contact with the industry. You study a lot of theory in class, then get out and can't do even the basic practice, what's the point? Why should someone hire you, when they need to retrain you for months before you become useful?
      Theory and practice should go together, the industry and the university be mutually beneficial, so you learn the things needed to become great in your field and then get in the field and start doing them, perhaps going back to college a few years later to specialise.
      The market is evolving too quickly for 3+ years courses to keep up, the tools they're teaching are already obsolete.
      Make it 3-6 months blocks, make it a build-your-own degree while you start working, make it in direct contact with professionals.
      Why you're studying what you're studying should always come first. Learning without a clear goal is tough and mostly useless.
