About this video: Over the last couple of seasons, I have been editing my garden. Removing plants I no longer like, and replacing them with new plants I will enjoy more. Its difficult to pull out plants that you have nurtured for so long. But at some point we have to make the decision to keep disliking them or to pull them out and plant something we will enjoy more? Life's to short to look at plants we don't like. Have you done something similar in your garden or are you thinking about it? Comment below. Not sure how the previous homeowners did it, but they planted hosta and azalea and I found the deer wouldn't leave them alone so they're GONE! This fall, I'm on a mission to get rid of what they're eating and replace with more of what they're not eating. I hope this pays off! Time will tell.

This video is perfect timing as I just took out very mature Little Lime hydrangea that was at least 5-6 years old and very full. I too was reluctant to do so as it was so healthy but it quickly got picked up after posting on my local gardening page. A young couple were thrilled to get it. She was so excited and it made me so happy to give it to her. It really opened the space and I planted an At Last rose in its place. The Ascot rainbow is such a great choice. I bought one 2 seasons ago knowing nothing about it just because I liked the leaf structure and boy oh boy has this plant performed. What a great surprise to see those lime flowers this Spring. Its remaIns perfect in winter and has gotten bigger than expected, about the size of a boxwood. Absolutely no maintenance at all, just a perfect plant in 4 seasons. I plan on replacing 3 nandinas in Spring with 3 Ascot rainbow euphoria. P.S. you always look so pretty in your dresses.

I am cleaning up flower beds for fall. I cut back lantana because it was taking over some new little shrubs. I pulled out some perennials in a different bed because they looked like a weedy mess. Marigolds and chewed on sunpatiens got yanked out also. I took out creeping phlox because the rabbits chew on it, and I pulled out 2 hardy hibiscus, which I love. They got too little sun, and the deer chomped off every single bud or bloom. Argh! I grow hibiscus for the flowers not the foliage. I also put wire trash cans over my little gold star rudbeckia to protect it from the rabbits. Fall is a really good time to edit the garden.

Steph, maybe I can return a favor for all the info I get off your channel. Take a tuna type can, or a solo cup cut in half. Put some holes in the sides of the can or cup to let the scent out. Dig a small hole next to your bunny feast plants, put a chunk of Irish spring soap in the hole then put the cup or can over it to protect it from being dissolved by rain or watering. The cup acts as an umbrella. You can cover it with a small layer of mulch or dirt to disguise it. The soap deters the bunnies. They seriously hate the smell of Irish Spring. It has to be the green type. Just replace the chunk occasionally. Hope it helps.

    • @pooftiger
      @pooftiger День назад +2

@@ritasicari7518 In general, yes it works. For me. They do love my mini daylillies. There are two factors that play in, though. Your bunny level. If you have a ton of bunnies it might not. Two, the other food sources. Hungry rabbits gotta eat. Even if they have to hold their noses. But for rabbits coming in just cause they find your ferns tasty, it does work. I don't know about deer. You don't need a whole bar, just a marble sized chunk and replace it occasionally to refresh the smell.

Every year they would get big and beautiful, then the deer come by one night and mow them down to about 3 inches above ground leaving nothing but short stems. So, this year, I replaced them with Lenten Roses or hellebores and lungwort. Never looked back. Now, on to the macrophylla hydrangeas, UGH! This one is going to hurt, but not more than seeing sticks there, too. Plan to replace those with bluebeards, weigelas, spireas, etc. I will put a few of them inside my fenced garden so I am not without totally. Think of the money Proven Winners or other company would make if they had a deer resistant hydrangea!

Hi Chris!! This is a great comment. YES, yes, and more yes!! Agreed. So glad you are transforming your garden to be more deer resistant and adding other beautiful plants as replacements. Well done 👏 💚

Weird how my deer have never touched the macrophylla or mountain hydrangeas. They love the panicle ones, though. I spray weekly with a mix of neem oil and hot pepper extract. No damage for a couple years. They learn.

@@willaerley7140 I have tried all the market repellents and about 20 or homemade concoctions to no avail. And, t-posts with 8 foot plastic deer fencing - yup, pushed it right over. Our deer are particularly vicious. I have put up metal chairs around new plants and they have moved the chairs to get to a couple new hostas and hydrangeas before the decision was made. That is why I called it quits. who knew they would move the chairs? Ridiculous!

@@ChrisCalmtheCrazy But have you tried 1 million scoville pepper extract? Per gallon, I mix 15 drops of it with a little neem oil concentrate for scent. I have to wear gloves and glasses because it’s hotter than mace. The deer take one bite and spit it out. Ha! It’s nasty toxic. Don’t spray where pets or kids hang out. I use a pump sprayer for safety.

Question: Why do you not like the hostas? Do they need more shade? More water? Have the deer nibbled on them?

Hi Steph, have you considered moving the deer eating plants to an area out of sight for the deer? It might divert them to that back area instead of your lovely garden.

We had 2 euronomus on either side of our front door that were there when we bought our house. Too big and wild and growing against the house and even grabbing onto the brick steps. My husband dug them out. Not easy! We replaced them with a small Alberta spruce on either side. I like to name things so they are Albert and Alberta. LOL. Had no problem making this change. The other ones had to go!

I’m ripping out all the fall aster this year. I’ve lived with it since the landscaper put them in in 21, but they have never looked good. They get too tall and the bottom leaves turn brown. This year I tried the Chelsea chop to see if that would help but now they are just shorter and dead looking. I would like to find a peachy coloured yarrow to put in its place. I will also plant my daffodils there since the space will be opened up after I pull the asters.

Be careful with the Euphorbia as when the plant gets damaged or you trim it, it releases a sap that can cause serious skin irritations.

Just this morning we pulled some generic green hostas, however, we replaced them with some "fancier" hostas that needed a new home. I feel your "I'm done with hostas" sentiments though. I've found my tolerance for staking plants is waning in my older years, so Salvia that won't stand on its own is outta here!! It may not necessarily be the plant's fault because I'm on a wooded lot where the most sun in any one space is about 5 hours. That being said, there are other plants that can hold their own, so they get the spot. I'm still willing to stake some plants, but it's getting to be far fewer.
Sadly, I lost my ascot rainbow Euphorbia this year, I may try and replace it next year.

Woohoo!! So fun to replace things with something prettier, or that you like more. YES, staking is also something that isn't all that fun so I totally can relate there. We need plants that can handle our gardens, and that we can enjoy without fussing with them. I'm sorry about your euphorbia. Hopefully you can find another that does better. Thank you so much for watching 💚

Nope, I've always been plant ruthless, I have a huge vast acreage gardens, BUT I don't keep things if they don't really grab and hold my attention! Today, I was ripping out a heliopsis seedling that for several years I had loved, though it just grows tooo TALL and the blooms do not hold up to the end of the season as do some of the other heliopsis, soooo OUT it went to give way to a preferred plant!

I have had these old-fashioned yellow daylillies in my garden for 14 years now, and I really dislike them. They only have one bloom cycle that doesn't last very long and look scruffy the rest of the year. The problem is, they were my moms, and I've had them ever since she passed away. I feel guilty even as I type this at the thought of taking them out. If it were anything else, I wouldn't have a problem pulling them out.

I can empathize with you. Letting go of some of my mom’s possessions has always been hard. When I do let go of something I “ show” it to her and make a joke of it. I told my kids not to keep anything of mine that they really didn’t like. I’m sure you can find a beautiful replacement for those day lilies that you can plant in her honor. Your mom would not want you to feel guilty!
