Philadelphia Transportation Company bought 1,000 of the old look buses between 1955 and 1957 and Septa took over in 1968 the majority of the old look green and cream buses soldiered on for another 12 years!

In Cuba we had buses exactly like this one with a small window before and after the back door. They arrived in Cuba at the end of the 1950's and were already in use in the USA. We also had a small version! They had automatic transmission and air suspension and seemed like they were floating above the streets! Those with broken air suspension felt like this one shown in the video! Congratulations to the engineers and designers of those Old Look GMs! ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👋👋👋👋👋👋 It would be interesting to see if there are promotional videos of those buses with their creators! !!!Applause! 👋👋👋👋👋

For those wondering why so loud? The engine is located directly in the rear of the bus on these. In the beginning of the video the cameras are placed at the back picking up the engine noise. The second half of the video shows a more realistic viewpoint of what the bus driver would have heard driving it. No one wanted to sit in the back of the bus because it was more noisy and incredibly more bumpy with its very firm rear suspension.

You would think the engineer designers would have made an extensive muffler componet to try reduce interior noise from the engine. It's very loud at the back. I can see why passengers disliked the rear of the bus. You need earplugs to ride back there.

It was like they had no shocks at all...every bump in the street was a huge bang and rattle. God, how I remember those rides.

Most GM Old Look coaches had spring ride, unlike today's buses that have air ride and shock absorbers so yes, you bounced and felt every bump.

I remember taking the bus to Sparrows Point to the VA Hospital with my mother. That was one rocky ride!

Jesus I know. Is this really what commuters had to deal with? Ouch.

We had these 1953 Old Look buses in the 1960s for school buses. They were the city transit buses that were retired from service. They belched black diesel smoke, and it seemed the engines roared at 9,000 RPM to achieve 5 miles per hour!

I work with one of the few surviving Old Looks in Western Canada. 1957 TDH-4512 BC Electric. Presently a mobile museum display and can’t carry passengers, but it still gets around to events. One day it is hoped to put the seats back in and restore it back to a regular bus.

@busrailfan Bumps started at 5:11. To better preserve these historic buses, they should be kept off of bumpy roads, go slow over, easing over bumps. These roads should be paved in general. Washington is the Capital. Bumps makes us look bad.

Very nice, like the torque converter shift at 3:09 . I've seen many of these buses during my childhood but only got to ride on an "Old Look" just twice in my life.

Yes, I memorized that time spot, too. 3:08 or 3:09. To go back and repeat it.

This baby sounds like she has a engine from the fish bowls , listening to the way the engine revs and transmission shifts lol ..nice throw me back in the late 60's dayz lol . Ours shifted one time with a clunk heard of the transmission ounce he let up off the gas of this model lol .

Driver does NOT "let off the gas" for the shift. The fuel feed stops, and tranny shifts, then fuel feed resumes, while the throttle pedal just stays floored. First time I drove one, when the engine slowed, I thought, "Uh-oh." I forgot about that!!! It was a -4512 I'd stolen for a joyride, and the last thing I needed was for something to go wrong in the middle of the road ! (It was a Short Way Lines bus) I put it back. I also swiped a PD-4106 for a little ride. Then called the cops from a pay phone to let them know where it was.

Ok, is it just me or are the roads really in that bad of shape down there? I noticed the bus seemed to be taking those bumps quite harshly starting around 8:40 .
