1987 was an interesting year since we were starting to see the introduction of Electronic Controls for Transmissions and later on in 1988 and 1989 the engines. Once the Clean Air Act was introduced in 1990 we saw the introduction of full electronic engine packages whose sole purpose was increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Whether they were successful or not is a different story lol. AWESOME COACH!!! 8960 is a pure CLASS ACT!!
It started in 1983 (1984 model) with the Allison V731 transmission with ATEC (Allison Transmission Electronic Controls), followed in the summer of 1984 (1985 model) by the HT748 for T-drive applications (Orion I, Gillig Phantom and others). In mid-1986 came the DDEC controls for this and Detroit Diesel's other two-cycle engine lines.
@Nabinut The Flxible Metro is my favorite Coach. I use to ride on them back in the 80s. Toward the end of this video all the rattling noises, isn't that coming from the folding seats where you put wheelchairs?
Holy! Wow, listen to that rattling on that bus! Sounds very much like the GM/MCI Classics with 6V92TA and Allison V series transmissions too. Nice recording! It sure seems to be the roads that are horrible in the DC area. DAMN!
I wish that marta could make some new flxible metro b buses just like the wmata had those 8700-9200 flxible metro b buses and just like the new jersey transit had those flxible metro b buses and just like the chicago transit authority had those 5300 flxible metro b buses, I wish that port authority of allegheny county and marta and chicago transit authority and los angeles metro transit authority and dallas area rapid transit authority and miami dade-county transity authority and bay area rapid transit authority could make some new flxible metro b buses like that someday

njtransit had 21 of those buses back in 1989 buses 1700 -1721 as a flxible metro b ADB or ADA buses as a 40102 6t seats 45-ADB The Ada buses seats 43-37 with 2 wheel chairs for njtransit flxible metro b transit 40102 6t buses were build from 1987-90 either a adb or suburban

@jmjfanss The transmission perhaps (ATEC controls), but I don't the engine is. IIRC, this bus came with a "Green Grenade" 6V92 (MUI, no electronic controls).
@jmjfanss Yeah, and the transmission would more than likely have the electronic controls. The engine is more than likely MUI'd; I don't think WMATA ever installed DDEC systems on any bus in the 8700 series (8700-8960).
I miss that rattling and them doors on the old flexible bus! Good times
My fav WMATA Flxibles ever! Gotta love that 6V92TA roar!!

Thanks for the correction i should have read the description. 1987 sounded a bit old for somthing still in service.
Man this reminds me so much of MARTA's Flxibles from the sound to the interior
Thanks goodness this bus is preserved. If all WMATA Flxibles were scrapped, then that really sucks
I wish WMATA would bring all them Flxibles back, I swear!!!!!
U & me both

Correction. This bus is a preserved unit, meaning it has been retired from active service. So one cannot simply it at any time.
I miss this bus 😟

Same Here
@MetroLinerXLZ i strongly agree wit u
@MetroLinerXLZ what was the drive train for GRTC'S old 800s
That's because when I record, I try to get it empty as possible to cut down on noise and curious onlookers.
Love the turning radius of those Metro's too! Nice video and thanks for posting!
Hmmm Growing up on these aww i miss em and the old fare box is still in it
how do you get to ride these
Sound like GM/ MCI Classic
I didn't know... When someone sees an empty bus in multiple videos I'm damn sure thay wouldn't think it was a regular bus ride
Sounds like 1986-87 GM Classics from Detroit D-DOT!!
Is the bus still preserved by WMATA
John Gamble mta has it
@MetroLinerXLZ
but it's also electronic controlled.

What part of Maryland is this.
wmata metro need to bring back 111ccc d-5 DC TRANSIT FLXIBLE BUSES AND 111CCC D-5 WVM TRANSIT FLXIBLE BUSES AND CREATED METROBUS AGAIN

@GRTCrid3r
Same as this bus. Detroit Diesel 6V92 engine, Allison V-731 transmission (with modified gear ratios).
@MetroLinerXLZ
it's electronic controlled and has fuel ecomony.
