  • While some of us can’t imagine living without Metro, at one point in time not all that long ago it was brand new. This 1976 promotional video, via PlanItMetro, shows the system’s earliest days:
Some areas have drastically changed since Metro arrived, like Rhode Island Avenue, which was surrpunded by parking lots and is now the site of mixed-use, transit-oriented development.
The video also features 2-car trains, which seems unimaginable in our era of 6- to 8-car trains.
    What do you notice?

10:14 … “give a timeless quality” … no kidding! The stations still look great today almost 50 years later!

Rode in a 2000 series the other day. That was a throw back. Looks like they finally got the 7000 series fixed.

The 1000 series could run for over 50 years. the 5000's lasted for 17. Laughable in comparison.

12:47 Before they were required to put elevators in all stations, they thought escalators were sufficient for wheelchairs.
Imagine anybody saying that today! They had to later shoehorn elevators into station designs as an accommodation for legal reasons.

No it isnt, that is the camera following the people. If the train was moving all of those people would be oddly walking in place

Yeah but the Subway predates the Metro by 70-80 years, accessibility wasn't on the 1900 urban planner's mind unfortunately.

@@EpicThe112 The MTA needs to make all of their stations accessible. What I'm saying is that those stations are very old so they don't have elevators.

@@bbriyes Yeah, but with half of these stations in NYC now getting flooded from major storms, unfortunately that will lead to slim selections as to what stations would be renovated with new Elevators, most of Downtown Manhattan for example would be out of the plan.
