Revisiting this video, my local transit system does exactly what these engineers wanted to avoid. Ordering Dennis double deckers that are equipped with upper exhaust on the right curb side. Granted engines run much cleaner today and are equipped with particulate traps or catalyst fluid systems.

The footage in the first part was filmed along the Detroit Street Railway (DSR), the predecessor to the current Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT). The DSR retired its last streetcars in 1956 and began switching from cream/red to ivory/green.

The ugly external vertical stack was put in place horizontal pipe on a GMC Diesel cut-away passenger van recently in Vancouver BC and a few people wanted to refer the management to this video.

There is so much exhaust the lower pipe blows in up in your face, Ever walk behind a bus pulling away? With a low pipe They stink.

@@intercityrailpal I volunteer at a Transit Museum. There are a few buses that smoke no matter what. Two 1957 Canadian Car Brill CD-52-TC buses with British AEC engines always leave a cloud. There is also a 1982 Flyer D901A that has a problem when it is cold. With the upper exhaust the smoke cloud just lingers.

Yet Flxible managed to have vertical exhaust with no issues and GM finally adopted it in the 70s.
