Evita is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. It concentrates on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. The story follows Evita's early life, rise to power, charity work, and eventual death.
The musical began as a rock opera concept album released in 1976. Its success led to productions in London's West End in 1978, winning the Laurence Olivier Awardfor Best Musical, and on Broadway a year later, where it was the first British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical.
This has been followed by a string of professional tours and worldwide productions and numerous cast albums, as well as a major 1996 film of the musical starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. The musical was revived in London in 2006, and on Broadway in 2012, and toured the UK again in 2013-14 before running for 55 West End performances at the Dominion Theatre in September-October, 2014.

Everyone saying that there’s no emotion is missing the point. It’s a concert performance. She isn’t actually acting. It would be different if you saw it in an actual theatre performance

I really tried to listen to Julie c. signing this. I understand she is the OG...but I was genuinely not enjoying listening to it, no matter how much I wanted to.
I don't understand why anyone would disregard this version. The narrative of the naive/green girl that turns into the powerful Evita that we know and love is not lost in this performance.

It is hard to compare any concept album to a more polished product that has gone through revisions and more direction changes. By the time Elaine Paige created the actual stage roll, no doubt the on stage direction helped cement the way the song should be sung and how the singer (whoever it is) should "act" through the delivery. I still think it would have been hilarious if for some reason the concept album's who thread about insecticide and all those lyrics about killing insects had made it into the stage version. Some concepts are best left in draft mode. :-)

She is good, but I agree Madonna felt the character inside of her, and Madonna's voice is more natural and not as heavily trained...just saying ;)

This is a concert, so obviously, this isn't gonna tell you anything about her acting, though even this watered-down acting is better than madonna's bland emoting. Also, having a trained voice is inherently good. It creates a more pleasant-sounding voice that's healthy. Madonna's voice was just processed.

Lol Elaine’s the original Evita. I saw her on stage in London and the raw energy she sent off the stage was insane. I like the film version but Madonna was too groomed and the sound too controlled. This concert version is far from the original. But I would have loved to see Paige and Banderas do some of the joint scenes.

I think Madonna does this better than Elaine! Ok Elaine can sing but there's no feeling in it.

I have to agree with you on that. Elaine has a beautiful voice, but obviously not living into the character. But then again, if she were singing WITHIN the performance, it would be a different story. Here she is merely singing a song.
Also, in my honest opinion, the movie stands NO comparison against the stage production. I was fortunate enough to watch Emma Kingston undeniably PERFECT the role of Evita in Johannesburg, 2017. I always had high regard for the movie, but the stage production gets my vote 100% !!

Elaine is the original West End Evita. She shows all her emotions in her face and voice. I saw the stage show three times last month. It was phenomenoal. Mike Sterling was Peron and Lucy O'Bryne was Eva and Glenn Carter was Che. The three of them made you feel every emotion. The film is good, but the stage show, will always trump it for me.

Madonna is totally incapable of acting or showing emotion. Don't Cry For Me is a big lie anyway. Evita doesn't mean a word of it and the words are meaningless political rhetoric.
