Though she's better live, this performance is breathtaking especially in comparison with other Evita's, who either sing it operatic or shout. She's by far the best in this song IMO.
I had the pleasure of hearing George Hearn live at the Palace when I worked La Cage & he did double Irish Whiskey with a beer chaser many times with me.
@@kennethwayne6857 Double shot of Irish whiskey with a beer chaser. He had an opening night party held for we who weren't invited to it. We ate, drank & partied till 5:00 am.
I cant help but hear a hint of sadness in Patti's voice whenever I hear anything from the original broadway cast of Evita now, all I have on my mind is what she must have been going through when she was playing Evita, I heard some really saddening information lately that was just heartbreaking, apparently not only did she find the singing hard and have no help, but Hal Prince was abusive towards her and nobody else cared, (Mandy Patinkin was her only friend in that company) it makes me so angry that she was seen as a 'diva' in this but was going through real shit.
Interesting, I hadn't heard about Prince being abusive to anyone. Well, you learn something new every day. I know that she had a hard time in that show and it's a damn shame, theater people can be bullies sometimes. I hope they were nicer to her after she won the Tony. I also heard her say in a recent interview that she finally felt comfortable in the part while doing a production in Australia.
STILL one of the BEST Broadway musicals I've ever had the privilege of attending (1979)!!! I can NOT explain how totally psyched the audience was during the performance!!! Then again, the Rice/Weber productions never disappointed (Jesus Christ Superstar, this one, Phantom of the Opera)...
I saw her and Pantkin in Chicago. You are right. The audience (including me) went nuts. I don't think I've ever seen so many standing ovations. Overwhelming and incredible experience!!

Love the way Mandy Patinkin says "the-voi-ce." :) Love it. It makes me smile everytime I hear it, and when he says "Din-iiiiide." instead of de-nied. Haha love it!
I LOVVVVE Patti, but you can tell that she wasn't ready to record this. ALW rushed them and made them record the album while they were still doing previews in California. Patti was not singing the role properly yet and had many problems with it. You can tell how much weaker her voice was, like at 00:54 when she sings "we'll..." compared to the live Tony performance.
This was indirectly touched on in the behind the scenes documentary on the laserdisc for the movie, ALW said that the movie had a better soundtrack (at least orchestrally, they were playing immediately before that) because they had more time and money on the movie. This recording was done on a time crunch.
Patti has been and is the best in/of all musical theatrical. She was so Amazing. I just she had stayed doing Sunset B...for many years because she was The Best with it and the Original London Cast recording proves it. Oh, well, we have this EVITA with us.

@MattHolck If by "Union Slogans," you mean the "Nationalization of the industries..." solo bits, I've wondered that, too. My guess is that, on screen, it would look strange for random crowd members to start singing solos, whereas onstage it would make more sense to an audience.
@GoddessofCoruscant I love her delivery of all the songs, and the range of songs Eva sings is quite large but she does it so well. I'm not sure but I also think she plays Fantine in the OLC Les Miserable, so she's quite versatile
the new orchestrations of this music suck!!! I played the violin book in 2006 and now in 2017 and its turned to shittttt. good job re-orchestrating! oh wait, nope!

Yea, it's really sad, and the fact she delivered every night, while all this was going on
She didn't find the singing hard-that was easy, it was the Spanish accent that messed with her.

Mandy Patinkin’s vocal range as displayed in Evita is amazing. Practically lifted the roof of the Pantages Theatre when I watched it in 1980.

BRILLIANT LYRICS! EXQUISITE VOCALS. Gotta love the stage version of "EVITA"
Raymond Maurer the original Hal Prince staging and Larry Fuller choreography was the best! I hated how the 2006 London/2012 Broadway revival was done.

Lyrics:
[Peron:]
Dice are rolling, the knives are out
Would-be presidents are all around
I don't say they mean harm
But they'd each give an arm
To see us six feet underground
[Eva:]
It doesn't matter what those morons say
Our nation's leaders are a feeble crew
There's only twenty of them anyway
What is twenty next to millions who
Are looking to you?
All you have to do is sit and wait
Keeping out of everybody's way
We'll ... you'll be handed power on a plate
When the ones who matter have their say
And with chaos installed
You can reluctantly agree to be called
[Peron:]
There again we could be foolish not to quit while we're ahead
For distance lends enchantment, and that is why
All exiles are distinguished, more important, they're not dead
I could find job satisfaction in Paraguay
[Eva:]
This is crazy defeatist talk
Why commit political suicide, there's no risk
There's no call for any action at all
When you have unions on your side
[Workers:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Cannot be denied
[Eva:]
There is only one man who can lead any workers' regime
He lives for your problems, he shares your ideals and your dream
He supports you, for he loves you
Understands you, is one of you
If not, how could he love me?
[Workers:]
A new Argentina, the workers' battle song
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Rings out loud and long
[Eva:]
Now I am a worker, I've suffered the way that you do
I've been unemployed, and I've starved and I've hated it too
But I found my salvation in Peron, may the nation
Let him save them as he saved me
[All:]
A new Argentina, a new age about to begin
A new Argentina, we face the world together
And no dissent within
[Peron:]
There again we could be foolish not to quit while we're ahead
I can see us many miles away, inactive
Sipping cocktails on a terrace, taking breakfast in bed
Sleeping easy, doing nothing, it's attractive
[Eva:]
Don't think I don't think like you
I often get those nightmares too
They always take some swallowing
Sometimes it's very difficult to keep momentum
If it's you that you are following
Don't close doors, keep an escape clause
Because we might lose the Big Apple
But would I have done what I did
If I hadn't thought, if I hadn't known
We would take the country
[Eva:]
Peron has resigned from the army and this we avow
The descamisados are those he is marching with now
He supports you, for he loves you
Understands you, is one of you
If not, how could he love me?
[All:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Cannot be, and must not be denied
[Che:]
How annoying that they have to fight elections for their cause
The inconvenience, having to get a majority
If normal methods of persuasion fail to win them applause
There are other ways of establishing authority
[All:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Cannot be, and will not be, and must not be denied
