No-one else has ever sung this song with so much sadness and despair in his voice...
The scenes for my video are from
"Cisco Pike" (1971)
"Trouble in mind" (1985)
"Heaven's Gate" (1980)
"Semi-tough" (1977)
"A star is born" (1976)
a tiny scene is from the bio -docu about Kris and
a tiny effect is from "Millenium"
Kris said in an interview, "This song probably was the most directly autobiographical thing I had written. In those days I was living in a slum tenement that was torn down afterwards, but it was 25 dollars a month in a condemned building, and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was more or less looking around me and writing about what I was doing. One time, some people broke into that place, and I had to call the police station to answer some questions about it, and the guy said, "Yeah, they really trashed the place when they went in there." But I hadn't noticed that it was any different. There were holes in the wall bigger than I was. It was quite a place, so "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is kind of more or less what I was living at that time. I guess it was depressing, I don't know, but the chorus was kind of uplifting. ... What I was really trying to do was to keep the feeling of loss and of sadness. For me at that time, it was the loss of my family and looking at a little kid swinging on a swing and his daddy pushing him. That was the feeling I wanted to get for the whole song. I think Sunday was the choice because the bars were closed in the morning and nobody was at work, so if you were alone, it was the most alone time..."
Sunday Morning coming down
Kris Kristofferson
Well I woke up Sunday morning
with no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast
wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert
then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes
and found my cleanest dirty shirt
and I shaved (washed) my face and combed my hair
and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
I'd smoked so much the night before,
my mouth was like an ashtray I'd been licking
(I'd smoked my brain the night before on cigarettes and songs
that I've been pickin')
but I lit my first and watched a small kid
cussin' at a can that he was kicking
then I crossed the empty street
and caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken,
and it took me back to somethin'
that I'd lost somehow somewhere along the way
On the Sunday morning sidewalks
wishing Lord that I was stoned
'cause there's something in a Sunday
that makes a body feel alone
and there's nothin' short of dyin'
half as lonesome as the sound
on the sleepin' city sidewalks
Sunday mornin' comin' down
In the park I saw a daddy
with a laughing little girl who he was swingin'
and I stopped beside a Sunday school
and listened to the song that they were singin'
then I headed back for home and
somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'
and it echoed through the canyons like
the disappearing dreams of yesterday.
Sunday Morning coming down

I’m 3 years clean boys. Thank God and my family. I lost all my friends... but I’m a better person now.
You didn’t lose your friends you lost. Acquaintances . There is a difference. 🙃
They weren't your friends. Keep on, keepin on!
Awesome. Just don't pick up
Those friends didnt make you a better person
If you lost those people when becoming sober you didn´t really need them anyway.
I lived in this cycle for twenty two years. 11 weeks clean yesterday.
11 weeks 2 days tomorrow
Good for you man. I’m stuck in it right now. I’ll get there though.
Good for you. Keep rolling. Remember, its poison.

Yes he has ! To those that matter, he has.
Correct.
I agree. Kris Kristofferson is one of the forgotten greats. "Self-Titled" and "The Silver Tongue Devil and I" are masterpieces of 70's country. I believe that there will be a time where he's discovered by a newer generation. His lyrics and vocals are too good to be forgotten
@@joed7185 Well said. To me he is up with Hank,Johnny, and Dylan. As good as it gets on his top 15 to 20 or so.
My 75 year old mother has advanced dementia, but when you put on a Kristofferson song, she comes to life and remembers all the words. Grew up with his music in the background. Never a fan at the time, but I sure appreciate him now.

I hope you have wonderful memories of your mom before dementia. Must be so painful to see it happen. I wish you both comfort.
That's cool man Kris has Lyme disease and could die at any minute there's no cure last I heard he wasn't doing good but yeah he's got that voice my dad would remember him he works in all field flying helicopters back in the day and the Gulf of Mexico that is and it was it was having a damn good time back then they said but kris is flying a little low today could use a few prayers

Anybody who's ever struggled with alcohol or drug addiction understands just how profound this song really is. 🙏
You are right on, brings back some very sad memories 😢

Thank you Kris Kristofferson for writing one of the best songs Johnny Cash ever sang.
Kris and this song pretty much saved my life and he doesn't even know it.

Doesn't matter who you are. This song cuts to the bone.
Totally
And that's the truth...

Yes, because most people can relate.
Such a beautiful song. Kris is one hell of a poet.
One of the best songs ever written. There are songwriters and then there is Kristofferson
He's a story teller. And I love a couple of sam Stone songs that I honestly can't get through without crying my heart out.
He's a genius pure and simple 👌
oh cman . its a good song but there is no need to go crazy and put things out of perspective, right?
you got that right brother
I'll still stand on your grandma's coffee table in muddy cowboy boots and say Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter who ever lived, and Kris, Shane MacGowan, and John Prine would clap for it.
I never saw this video until today Jan 29 2023. As I turn 62 next month and after singing this song most of my life , in old bands and driving down the highways of life until this very moment when seeing the memories of life played out by Kriss… it came clear to me just how lonely it can be when you have everything but miss the one thing you have always longed for! Name me one song today that brings out these emotions… who ever put this video together, if you ever read this “ Thank you for finding the emotion to the words and putting this together”
Peace to you !
Same here, but May 2024... turn 77 this month and been listening to this song for 55 years. Those scenes take me back...
I remember 1970 when this album came out. His voice was magnetic and the songs on it were poetic. He wasn't well known yet among my hippie friends from the 60's..Yet I always had an affinity for country music and folk rock back then. I knew this guy wasn't going away. "Me and Bobbie McGee" turned so many on to the singer songwriter with the funny name...Fast forward to 2024, having been sober for many years, my life has changed beyond my wildest imagination...Thanks Kris for helping me through the dark times...I'll never forget ...

I was just wondering when an where I heard of Kris Kristofferson. It was Janis Joplin singing Me and Bobby Magee. Lol
Listening to this song when I was literally in the depths of the worst pain captured what this song represents. 13 years sober and I’ve lived through this song, it’s a masterpiece.
Touches all souls
33 years sober. It don't mean a thing. It's the one day, one hour, one minute, battles we must win. Some things may get easier with time, but so too can complacency. The monster is patient. Sometimes I need these reminders of the pain, lest I take it all for granted.
Beautifully stated and accurate.
Thank you. Your words strengthen sobriety resolve that’s been wavering. The monster is indeed patient, insidious & cunning.
@LW-vs2su I thank you as well. There are many who shared with me a gift I didn't really deserve. I can only keep it by giving it away. Don't go it alone.
The monster is indeed ruthless to the core
I just keep feeding the monster. My anguish
I’m really appreciating how he stood up for & stood by Sinéad O’Connor at the Bob Dylan tribute show years ago. Thank you, Kris! ❤
Years before the general public knew about Catholic Church abuses, Sinead was speaking out about it. And Kris held her in his arms for it. Bless her, bless him.
I already had great respect for Kris, but on that day my respect for him grew tenfold!
Still among the most brilliant lyrics ever written! Happy 85th Birthday Kris!

Kris lived like 7 lifetimes in 1. Amazingly accomplished.
He’s an Army Ranger School alumnis.
He was a janitor in in Nashville when Johnny Cash pick him up
He wasn’t a W.P. graduate, but was offered a teaching position there. He’s from a military family and his dad was a US Army general (not sure exact rank - either 1 or 2 star). Regardless - yeah - he’s had some incredible highs - and lows.

20 years ago since I took back control of my life from alcohol, I thank from the bottom of my heart, my family and friends for not giving up on me.
I had a OXYCODON addiction after a terrible accident that crushed some of my vertebrae!
! Was 69 years old then ! When I was 18 I bought the first elpee from Kris Kristofferson ,but this song will always remember me the struggle to get clean ,I was in hell during stopping this terrible drug addiction ! But I made it! Now I’m 72 ,almost 73 ………. I got my life back and tonight I heard I listened to this song again ……. Everyone who is or was on alcohol or drug addiction feels how deep and profound this song is ! The loneliness, the pain, the tears ,the sorrow, depression ,the anger….………. All those feelings you have to feel and face to leave the hell and getting back your own life ,and finding heaven on earth! With rest and peace in body, heart and your soul! To all who try…… you can do it, you will succeed, trust your strength to become the captain of your own life! To all I wish you love and happiness and will say a prays to give you the strength to embrace yourself …..and be clean! You can do it! It’s worth while … 💫💫💫🙏
Just rember your strong
Everyone listening to this right now - hope you are all doing OK ❤
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts.
As good as I can do
I'm not.
I feel like the song makes it worse
Gives me a reason
I am 70. Remember this song when i reached rock bottom at age 19. Like it was yesterday. Play this song , brings back the memories of when i woke up one sunday morning in a railway station in Christchurch New Zealand . Did not know how i got to that point. Could not even rememder where i left my car before going on a drinking binge.Vietnam memories. Went onto very good life with a good wife. But this is alwaysa somber reminder
Once woke up under a tree in Finsbury Park, N. London. In those days a VERY dodgy part of town - don't know how I got there either...
God bless you !
Woke up in a old abandoned truck don’t remember getting in it in Aberdeen Scotland yeeehah I guess
im there
I hear you brother, after Vietnam I went on a 21 year drunk. An incredibly patient wife managed to sober me up for 23 years, but unfortunately my demons remained and she left me, so now I’m hitting the bottle again. It’s like the song says: “People say I should’ve been more, probably so if it hadn’t been for that crazy damn Vietnam war”
Is there anyone else out there who not only thinks but actually knows that the old days were better?
Yep - they were! But at the time, we didn’t appreciate them nearly enough 🥺
more than u think;)
70’s
Oh yes.
no they weren't better. you have been younger
I come to tears every time I hear this song.
I sobered up at 21 and this was my life from 16 to 21.
I know it’s not a long time but you don’t forget being in absolute hell.
Coming up on 37 years clean and sober and I can still touch the pain of Sunday Morning Coming Down!
Good health and stay sober, Thomas Ireland.

Great song. Anybody out there trying to get or stay sober, one day at time. Keep going. They told me everything would be okay and life would get better. That was over 16 years ago. They were right. Life got better, and i don't miss it one bit. Living sober is incredible.

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest classics ever written. KK is one of the very best writers to put words together and make em work. Knowing what they mean is what makes it a true classic.
Wow , this song totally describes my life the past 35 years. I lost mom when I was young and life was never the same again. I lost all the dreams I had when I was young. I was just trying to survive emotionally. Alcohol, women, friends, didn't help. Whenever Sundays came around and I got the smell of someone frying chicken I would miss the sight of mom in the kitchen. Or when I saw a child walking down the road with their mom it hurt so bad. It's so true. No other day felt as lonely as a Sunday . Last year I found God and I could finally get healing from the past. Wish I found God sooner.
❤❤❤
Gone bless you and He has. Those 35 years for you find God, He was there all the while waiting for you. Have a beautiful relationship with Him.
The wonderful thing is you found God now.❤

Kristofferson's lyrics are simple perfection, he captures a feeling that a lot of us can relate to all too well.
That’s true, but a lot of people on here think otherwise. Do you think he should have done better on this song?

Whether it be by Cash, Nelson or Kristofferson, this song thus at your heart. You can almost feel the sadness., the depression, the isolation in Kristofferson's lyrics. Like Dylan, Kristofferson is a true icon in painting magical landscapes of feelings and emotions.

wow LIVSANGEL you really hit home with me today. almost every word you speak reminds me of me when I was a child and had an alcoholic father, and my mom died and dad remarried and she left and there were 4 of us boys and. step sister and half brother ive never met. Dad pulled a shotgun on us one night when he was drunk , my oldest brother stepped in front of us. to protect us. and my other 2 brothers distracted him while I ran a mile ( I was 5 yrs old) to the nearest neighbor to get help, lucky for us my moms brother was driving down the road and saw me and. carried me back to our farm and walked up to daddy and took the shotgun away from him , and daddy broke down and started crying his eyes out, strangely enough we all went up to him and hugged him and told him we still loved him. ( you don't stop loving your dad. or an ancholic just because he pulls a shot gun on you ) , lucky for all of us it wasn't loaded , dad told us later that he took the shells out several weeks before cause he didn't want us to accidentally get ahold of it and. hurt someone . OMG GODS angels were among us then for sure.
it was shortly after that , that our dad gave custody of us to. my MOMS sister LUCY and she and Maggie raised us, MY father quit drinking about a year after that and. was remodeling the old farm house and it caught fire and. he swallowed flames and. he was burned over 80% of his body from the fire, HE died 30 days later in the hospital and I know he is in heaven because he told us one day he had turned his life over to GOD and got saved,
SO yes LIVSANGEL. I see that I knew your Father just like you knew mine. LOVE YOU DAD always and forever
Tears ....you struck a chord, I feel you.
May God be with you

So I'm thinking maybe you could put pen to paper and perhaps come up with a song from my heart . Didn't realize it until I put it down it just flowed out from my heart, anyway here goes . Welcome home back to the world! Went to the Nam at 18 came back, lost my youth forever gone. I can never make it up, whats gone is gone. As I look at the 18 year olds today I cant believe the difference , their innocents, their youth. Watching them talking enjoying life as they should , wondering what it would have been like to have that, but it was but it was taken forever. Sounds like a song but it's reality , innocents never returns. Enjoy and cherish a normal childhood as we all should and should have. Thank a Vet .

Hardtop Harry good on u brother.im still drinking can't stop
My dad was in AA for over 30 years he died 10 years ago and it was someone in AA told him about Kristofferson and he to told me loving him ever since he was In Belfast a few wks back went and seen him 82 and still has you captivated fantastic legend
My dad drank over a case of beer every day of his adult life until about a year before he died at the age of 45. He considered this his theme song. It's brilliant in its stark portrayal of addiction.
It's been 38 years since dad died, and I still listen to this song and tear up. Rest in peace, dad.
@Jos Rimmen My dad was 45 when he died in 1982. If he were still alive he'd be 83 years old. I was 17 at the time, and I'll turn 55 in two months.
I hope you doing good brother
So sad to read this. All the best to you Cody x
Cody Bolt thanks for sharing.
Wow sad Honey
Found my cleanest dirty shirt, that one line, just about says it all. One of the best lines ever penned.
Such a sad song. Brilliant lyrics.
God, does this masterpiece resonate with anyone who has ever been an addict. I remember so many Sunday mornings just like this. With the help of A.A. I'll be 34 years sober on October 1, 2018. My plea to anyone still struggling with alcoholism or any other addiction, please give A. A. your best shot. If it worked for me it'll work for anybody!
.
Not for everybody. Could never get my head around the 'higher power' thing. Born an athiest, always have been. Seen too many people killed in the name of so called beliefs.

@@simonegraf508 Nah, his songs are great anyway, but you got a point. All have experienced extreme loneliness. Part of the human condition. That can get someone to relate to Kris's song here. Cheers.
Will be 20 years clean and sober, come this December.
Well done William, great achievement.
Great to hear I was never in that position. I was not a great drinker to start with
thats fucking beautiful
GOD bless you brother...that's awsome. A day at a time
Awesomeness, congrats
A timeless classic. One beautiful song. Loved it as a kid and now 50 yrs later still love it
I have never been a drinker yet I sure can appreciate the heartfelt feeling of this song ❤
so can I 😊
Yeah,
jody and the kid is a great song of his also .
This song was the only thing on earth that could make my father cry... He's gone now, But I am still so sorry for the pain I gave him and my mother.
Haven't had a drink since 1977 Thank god they saw me get sober.
Wow, that's about the same time Kris got sober! Congrats to that! 😊
Wow. Me too. Same story.
Congratulations
I'm not there yet, but I'm feeling confident to build something that's sacred until the end...
@@knightscroftsquire-muldoon Good luck May the Force be with you.
My father passed away this Sunday - this was his favorite song, so of course it has a very powerful impact on me. Something lost along the way ...
I'm sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss. I just discovered this song which came out when I was a toddler and find it to be powerful and true. Great song, no wonder your Dad liked it!
Thank you!
it was one of my dads favourites also, my thoughts and prayers are with you
Sorry for your loss.
One of my fav songs, too. great lyrics, great voice!
Can't believe I'm gonna hit the big seven-oh this year...
Kris Kristofferson is considered "one of the greats" the whole world over! He's with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and anyone else that ever topped the charts and held our hearts in his hands over the past 50 years. He received one of the first Nashville songwriter's awards back in the early 1970's and still plays at the Ryman. You can't get better company or recognition than that!
Yeah I agree, have always loved his songs
Been a fan all my life
It's so beautiful
What's your favorite song by kris?
@@marcosbryant865 ciao amico! 🙋♀️😍😘😊💘
Hello dear!!
I have seen your wonderful comment on my public channel, am so happy and impressed with your support on my career!! Where are you watching from?
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts.
If you can't feel this classic timeless hit from the master himself Kris Kristofferson then you just ain't livin. I'm turnin' 60 in November this year '23, I'm a Kiwi [New Zealander] trauma left leg hemipelvectomy amputee [near-death motorcycle accident in 1990 when I was 26] and I still probably haven't lived half the life Kristofferson has lived, yet I can still almost tear up listening to his hit.
I'm nearly 70 now now. Kristofferson is one of the best songwriters ever. Depending in which era you are from. Listen to music from the 30's, 40's. Great compositions & compilations. It's not all about the present. I love music. Mozart, Lennon, George Jones & Tammy. Patsy Cline is my all time best. But that's just me. Sit & enjoy the music. Sorry. I tend to go on a bit.
yes .........you are right at 100 %................that's an old german who loves that song!
Sounds like you have a very eclectic taste in music, Steve! Well done.
Thanks. Nice to know I'm not the only one. We seem to be too far & few between.
Agree great songwriter - one of the best
We share similar tastes in music Steve, I'll be 76 soon and love all this.
He and Willie are the last two of the titans of country the country music that I love. Thanks for making this available.
Amen my friend
Hello thanks for your comment and supports, your comments and constant support has brought me this far, keep supporting ❤️
I genuine believe he's the greatest storytelling lyricist ever!
I'm 35 years old and i'm from Ecuador but my father likes country a lot. He had some LP's and that kind of stuff. I love country with my soul. I'm listening this beautiful song right now with my husband and my one year baby girl is dancing slowly, she can feel it too. ❤
Had a beer with him and Willie one time down in Austin. Just cool people. Great songwriters. It was at the Black Cat Lounge on 6th St. 1984
Cool
A friend of mine and I ran smack into Willie Nelson in Ventura California.
Meet him in Hana Maui where he lives
Great singer and writer
Neat story! My brother in law and his wife (Kris’ BIGGEST fan) live in Hawaii, where Kris and his wife have a home. A couple of years ago, they were out shopping and happened to see Kris and his wife shopping, also. My sister in law walked over to meet him, and she told him how she had just missed meeting him in the late 1970’s, after one of his concerts. Kris and his wife were very gracious and kind. One thing led to another, and Kris and his wife invited my brother in law and sister in law to go out to lunch with them. The four of them got along great, and took a lot of photos.
And it echoed through the canyon like the disappearing dreams of yesterday. Kris is a poet, what a beautiful phrase and so much truth and sadness in that line. One of the great American songwriters.
A wonderful version. The restrained singing beautifully conveys the ethos. I love the way Kristofferson can convey the emotion without falling into sentimentality.
Beautiful song. Well sung. I also loved 'Me and Bobby Mcgee.'
Happy Birthday to Kris Kristofferson who turns 83 today! A big THANKS to
Kris for all the years of music, movies, lyrics, and joy he has
provided to some many of us fans.
I've always thought that a person who writes a song like this had to feel it to be able to write it.I think Kris was an old soul even when he was young...He learned a lot of hard lessons in life and he learned them the hard way...It made him the best of the best of all songwriters in my opinion.
@Kris Kristofferson the cleanest dirty shirt is testament!
I play it on a Sunday morning to remember, the way I was and the way I am now, through the grace of God ,and fellowship of AA ,im a Sober alcoholic Today, and just for Today …🙏

I had the pleasure of meeting Kris in Sydney over 20 yrs ago, he was so nice❤️
Hey how are you doing today…?
The part where he says I got my cleanest dirty shirt from my wardrobe says so much in so few words. Its heartbreaking 💔
yes, a great line in what is, among other things, a great work of art
My reaction too! I grew up surrounded by alcoholics. Heartbreak all around.
@@jerseygram8472 Bless you. What is it about these artists who can turn such tragedy into a thing of beauty💕🎶
I've know countless types of drinkers but the three I remember the most is the evil , the good, and the opinionated. Drinking through your life doesn't always entails a long road of misery. This song expresses sorrow through the voice of Kris. I've met gentlemen in their late ages of 55 to 65 that were career criminals in drinking lol. It's a lifestyle and its tough one but they never expressed sadness or regret. Its not for the faint of heart. You need to be supported by the old teachers of drinking. The older crowd that's willing to put up with your shenanigans. Drinking is a deadly art but it made men like Kris, Johnny, Elvis, Willy, and etc. It's a tough life but makes the body feel alone.
Du hast so recht mein Freund ...
4 years sober ,wasnt born when this was out but remember my dad singing it and hes 82 now and still singing ,hummin ,and strummin with me. Love
35 years since I had a Sunday morning like this. This song says it all. Kristofferson is a genius, poet, and a mensch.

"Something in a Sunday, that makes the body feel alone" So true Kris, so true!
That line is so deep in so many ways.
Yes, there is something about a Sunday, I recall being in a room with many and yet felt alone, you never forget.

Hey Sylvia...
I remember as a little girl, sitting by my mom and she would play this record. Never really understood it . Only being 5 , but now years later my mom is really sick and I would give anything to have her able to sit with me one more time and play this song for her. 🙁, Love you mom.

"And it echoed through the canyons
like the disappearin' dreams of Yesterday"
People who say Johnny Cash does this song better fail to realize something:
Johnny is just singing the song, doing the cover.
Kris is actually telling the story with all the little emotions attached to it. And that is why he will always do this song better than Cash.
Yes indeed, also Mr Kristofferson while working as a janitor. For Columbia records. Wrote this powerful song! 🎶 in my opinion, it's the best version! What a beautiful 🎨'ist. & humble man.....Thanks for the Info-& great 🖇️..🎶🎵🎶..👍..Also Thanks to Mr Ray Stevens!🎶..👌..
Kris is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. I saw Ken Burns' documentary "Country Music". He was truly courageous to pursue his dream of being in music. Handsome and intelligent man. His songs have touched me deeply in addition to being very easy on the eyes.
Even after his Mother disowned him! Wow!
I wonder if they ever made up. I'm watching it, too! 🎶💕
@Kris Kristofferson
Stop the pathetic identity scamming. You were doing this on Jackson Browne's youtube channel as well. Will report this.

No one sings it like Kristofferson.
Thank you for doing up such a wonderful video.
Maija Shelley Thank you! Glad you liked it :-)
Maija Shelley agree as well, for about 40 years?
+Maija Shelley Perhaps it's because it is his 'Very Own Composition',..Smile!
+Maija Shelley Well Johnny Cash does a pretty good version that hit the Billboard at #1 at the same time Janis Joplin took Kris's Me and Bobby McGee to #1 on the Billboard Pop charts.
+74Thunderbird ~ for ME, as I said, nobody can sing it like Kristofferson. I'll take his over anybody's.
