  • In Little Rock, Arkansas, the Pulaski Academy Bruins play the game of football differently than you've ever seen before.
    They don't punt.
    They onside kick every time.
    And they always go for two.
    Kevin Kelley, the architect of the system, studied years and years worth of data and implemented the system with absolute success. He's won five state titles and has one of the best offenses in the entire country.
    Find out how the self-proclaimed "weird mind of football" sees the football field completely different than you and why you might just be another brainwashed sports fan.

      @celebrim1 5 лет назад +93

      Statistically speaking, either you are shooting from within two yards of the basket, or you should be shooting threes - and the NBA is gradually moving in that direction. That's because the percentage of hits from 3 yards from the basket is about 45%, but its still 39% from three point land. That gives you expected points of .9 from a short jump shot, versus 1.17 from three point land. So if you can't work it in close, pump it out and take an open three.

    • @TheMelnTeam
      @TheMelnTeam 8 лет назад +17

      I find it's a pretty good sanity check for decision making in 4th down situations; what does your opponent want you to do? If he doesn't want you doing something, you should probably do it :D. 4th and 1 is overwhelmingly favorable to go for it in every level in football...and Madden downright babies the offense so it's even more so there lol.

    • @Blakestefer
      @Blakestefer 8 лет назад

      +TheMelnTeam - There are plenty of 4th and 1 stops in the NFL.

    • @TheMelnTeam
      @TheMelnTeam 8 лет назад +1

      Blakestefer
      The expected value of an attempt is almost always greater than punting, despite that some attempts fail. You are turning the ball over either way, so you're trading a chance at converting for 30-40 yards in most cases. Possession is (usually) worth more than that, unless you're the 2000 Ravens whose defense was so much better than their offense that it actually changed the favorable decision mathematically sometimes :p.

    • @Blakestefer
      @Blakestefer 8 лет назад +3

      TheMelnTeam this is all determined by the score, timeouts remaining, and how much time is left on the clock. In the NFL it's typically a much better statistical play to punt the ball.

    • @TheMelnTeam
      @TheMelnTeam 8 лет назад +4

      Blakestefer
      No, it's frequently close, and 4th in short often favors going for it outright. Not always though.

    Onside kick every time, lots of trick plays, and never punting.

    • @CoDWiiPS3Gameplay

      GoldenWarrior7 not really, as the data they analyzed included all levels of competition, up to and including the NFL

    • @BlueAndGold31
      @BlueAndGold31 8 лет назад +41

      CoDWiiPS3Gameplay I understand, I just don't see it working. If you're on the opponent 40, that's too long for a field goal on 4th down, so you go for it instead of punt.
      If you don't make it, you give the other team a short field to operate with. And give elite guys like Luck, Brady, or Roethlisberger a short field time and time again, and it's game over for your defense. And if you onside kick every kickoff, you're probably only going to get the ball back a handful of times.
      NFL offenses are too good to consistently be given short fields if you keep failing on 4th downs instead of punting, and giving them onside kicks.
      Going back to Madden, I never punted as long as I knew I was better than, or equal to, my opponent. Once the settings got put on the toughest level and every yard mattered, then yes, I did punt on 4th downs. Because field position is can be used like a weapon, and pinning an opponent in their own 20 can be as much of a weapon as scoring points if you're a good coach.

    • @ianw8479
      @ianw8479 8 лет назад +27

      CoDWiiPS3Gameplay u can talk about analytics all u want, and although this college professor analyzed games at every level, he never analyzed games that had put the tactics in place. Humans aren't computers or statistics, and good coaches and top notch players would adjust to the opponents weaknesses and change their game in an unpredictable manner

    • @counterfit5
      @counterfit5 7 лет назад +5

      How often do expected onside kicks actually work in the NFL? I would suspect that's a low number, considerably lower than the 25% that this guy gets.

    • @craigresnianky6909
      @craigresnianky6909 7 лет назад +21

      He might have analyzed NFL games, but the key thing to remember here is that in the NFL, fake punts, fake field goal tries, and even some onside kicks, are almost always a SURPRISE. That means that it's so far out of the ordinary that this is why it works. But you won't see an NFL coach repeatedly try a fake punt within a game, because the defense immediately learns to watch for it. Can you imagine an NFL team knowing that your team is "going for it on 4th down" almost every blessed time? That would NEVER work vs elite-level defense and special teams. If it became part of a team's plan to do what this guy does, it wouldn't work, because the element of surprise is the only reason those plays work on the NFL level to begin with. It only works in high school because the disparity in talent is very large, both from team-to-team as well as within your own team. The players are young, inexperienced, thinner, shorter, slower etc. That isn't the case in the NFL.

    This reason this system works is because of the defense. Like the film said, it is in the top ten ranked in the country. So of course with those numbers, you take things like the 45 yard for granted or giving up yardage for granted. Any team without a defense who tried this system would fail miserably.

    • @Mrjohnnymoo1
      @Mrjohnnymoo1 8 лет назад +1

      My point is, it's so easy for the coach to run his offensive, and special teams setup due to his teams talent alone. I have seen not so great teams make it to state due to an amazing O and D line, but the rest of the team were sorta average. When you have the all around talent that his team has, it's easy to just day the numbers are on your side. A hyper offense football team can still do very good, like the 1980s Hogs.

      man the high school I went to needs this guy. consistently mid tier every year and they have plenty of talent. the coaches I had ran the team like it was a college system and we'd consistently get beat by the crafty teams that would run riskier plays. even though a lot of coaches think about running a system like this, they're all too afraid of getting ridiculed and losing their job. all it takes is one season that was better than the last to change the perception of it.

      Mr Beantown that's what sucks about highschool football. u get all the parents being cry babies saying it's disrespectful to keep scoring while up 3-4 touchdowns....yet these kids more then likely will not play pro football or maybe not even college so every game they take the field they need to go out and play hard and have fun. taking a knee and trying to burn 2 full quarter just to "not run up the score" isnt fun for anyone and I think its more disrespectful to the other team. it's like saying ur not good enough to stop us so we will stop ourselves for u. same for when a kid gets injured on a big hit. all of a sudden the kid who caused the injury is considered an asshole.....that's football!

      I wish we could of played them. That trick play crap would of been the death of them. You can't get away with trick plays against a disciplined defense. We had one of the best defenses in the country with 3 players within the top 10 in the nation in tackles. I give all the credit to our defensive coordinator. He was one smart cookie and is D1 defensive coach at a great program. If you try that reverse crap they kept running we had a outside linebacker waiting on your ass. I think it would be fun to play "for" him, but Relying too much on a trick play against disciplined defenses would end up poorly for you. Don't believe me go watch NFL football and see how many reverses tend to work out.

    My friend did a college paper on this as well. He is an actuator now (a person who uses extremely complicated formulas to analyze and determine risk assessment and policies for insurance companies). He determined it depends on the plays ran and by the statistics the players have and in how many games they have played. It also depends on similar numbers on the defense. However if every player had average statistics he determined that past that teams 39 yard line, on 4th and 5 or shorter, with a run play (assuming 2 of the previously ran plays were runs) has a 67% chance of working and a screen play has a 80% of working. A slant route 69%, a hook route 63%. Assuming field position is a secondary objective to scoring, and time of possession a third, you have a 87% chance to have more time of possession if you go for it on 4th and 5 or shorter from your own 38 or closer and only attempt field goals 4th and 3 or greater from at least the 12 yard line. You have a 75% chance to have better field position means. Also, given there are no turnovers from either team, you have a 72% chance of scoring more points per possession, and a 77% chance of winning the game. Again assuming both teams have average stats at every position. I applied this tactic to madden and i was 153-6 on madden 25 and 50-2 on madden 15. I would always play as a team with a good secondary and a mobile quarterback. Before i did this i was a slightly above average madden player (334-296 on madden 11). Also always going for 2 doesnt match the statistics of a team that seldom goes for 2 41% vs 54% because the other team better prepares for 2 point conversions, and only about 10% of an entire playbook is usually allocated toward 2 point plays, making it more predictable. Although assumed the same philosophy is applied to onside kicks, the field position you forfeit is worth the chance of getting the ball (27%) which is mentioned correctly in this video.

    this actually makes a lot of sense. you get to use the 3rd down to shorten up the yards to go til the 1st down for the 4th down. anything longer than 3rd n 3/4 is usually an automatic pass while a team will definitely run the ball at least one of the 1 of the 1st 2 downs, 90% of the time. this gives you the opportunity to mix it up on the traditional 3rd n 5-8. and especially if youre passed the 50 bc how many high schoolers van accurately place the ball inside the 20 or consistently punt the ball 40 yards? not many and anything less than a 35-40 yard punt is just useless

The same has been done by Pep Guardiola in European club soccer: if the other team doesn't have the ball and you don't give away possession, you're more likely to score and therefore win. A 4th and 19 on your own 5 is one of those outliers. usually outliers skew data, but eliminating that data, you improve the your conclusion. So by eliminating the 4th and 19 on your own 5, you are even more likely to come out on top.

Plus I hoped that they would kick to us because the kid I had returning kicks was good for a TD on a punt or kickoff or both on nearly every game.

      Thomas L. Either out of bounds or as close to our sideline as possible, never to their sideline. If it goes out of bounds then there's a 10 yd penalty and the ball starts around the 35 or 40. Most kids if not taught properly will try to field the ball near the sideline and they have less of a chance of getting a good return.

    I like this way of thinking. I saw some analytics once that made a good case that it's more important to have a good glove at first base than a good bat. Anyone can catch a ball that's thrown straight and level, but a guy who can scoop the ball out of the dirt and prevent a few E5's and E6's each game is going to prevent more runs for the other team than a big bat will produce for yours. Good gloves are also cheaper than good bats, so you'll have more money to spend on the mound.

    What I love is yesterday the Cardinals were up 20 on Washington and Kingsbury decided to go for it on 4th and 1from their own 30. The Cardinals converted and while they didn't end up scoring I thought it was the right call. This morning on the radio the local radio guys, while praising Kinsbury's "genius", emphasized you can't go for it there, you punt. Their argument was you're up 20, your defense is pitching a shutout and the offense is playing well, you don't take chances like that. To me that's stupid, you're up 20, your defense is playing well, your offense has been moving the ball, you have Kyler Murray who gives you so many options, of course you go for it for the same reasons these guys think you shouldn't. If you believe in your defense they can hold them to a field goal and if you have faith in your offense you should be able to come up with one yard. So many people just won't let go of the old conservative ways of thinking. As a Cardinals fan we've been playing conventional football for a long time and it's resulted in no Super Bowl wins so screw playing conventional football.

    This would not work against an organized Power 5 college football team. Not even Oregon can get to 50% on 2 point conversions. Onside kicks give up way too much field position if you don't get it (which in FBS, you most likely won't get it). And not punting gives up even more. This probably can work in high schools and maybe a few very small colleges. But if anyone in the NFL or Power 5 of CFB did this, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot and that coach would be fired immediately. Alabama is one of the most conservative and old school teams in the country, yet they are winning championships nearly every year. Everyone with a brain knows that defense, turnovers, and field position are 3 of the most important things in college football and NFL. By doing this silly method you would be losing the turnover battle, losing the field position battle, and you would put your defense in a very tough situation. I'd love to actual see and read the "analytics" he keeps talking about. There is no way going for it on 4th and 15 at your own 5 is statistically the right thing to do (unless your losing with minutes left in the game).

      Liam Pfleegor Perhaps, but that entire piece you just wrote has nothing to do with the statistics and everything to do with your own subjective reasoning. And as he mentioned in the video, they looked over hundreds of games and ran thousands of simulations across ALL levels of playing. And still came up with you should always go for it on the 4th. (Granted with a few exceptions)

    • @The_Bleak_
      @The_Bleak_ 8 лет назад +2

      Yes I gave no actual statistics, but neither did they. Well I did say that not even Oregon (commonly known as one of the best offensive teams in CFB) can make 50% of their 2 pt conversions. Like I said in my orginal, Alabama is known for being an old school conservative team in football, and they are doing just fine by being conservative. So I doubt they will change what they are doing since they are winning championships left and right. Yes.. that's just my opinion, but to back it up once again: they aren't changing anything and still winning. So I still don't think this coach's philosophy will transfer into FBS or Pros any time soon.
      If I have a good defense, I would rather punt the ball and make them try to drive the extra 35+ yards against my good defense. This would flip the field position and could put my offense into good position to drive. If I go for it and miss 50% of the time (which is about the average for most teams on 4th down), it gives the other team great field position without having to do anything offensively.
      Btw, they gave no statistics either. They just said "We have run simulations and we determined we should always go for it." Without showing the statistics and explaining simulations (which I touched on in my original comment).
      Also, one thing I'm SURE that the simulations and statistics don't take into account for, is momentum. I don't think many people will disagree that momentum can really swing a game in a heartbeat. Just one play can fuel a team and get them going. I've seen it happen uncountable amounts of times in my years of watching college football. And one of the most momentum shifting aspects of a game are turnovers that lead to points. And by going for it on 4th down and missing half the time would be a huge momentum shift to the other team. And yes you gain some rhythm and momentum by converting a 4th down, but ask anyone and they will say a turnover creates far more momentum. No I have no statistics for this, because there aren't really any. You can't measure momentum, which is one reason the simulations are flawed. But if you have watched football, you know about Big Mo(momentum).
      Lastly, Georgia State, Oregon State, UTSA, UNLV, Kansas, UConn, Fresno St, Tulane, Hawaii, Old Dominion, etc Have some of the worst 4th down percentages in all of college football this year. They also all suck. I do not think implementing this guys coaching philosophy for those teams will help them since all their 4th down percentage is below 32%.
