And the reason we don't republish Ahrefs Blog articles to Medium is because of the style of the content. We mostly publish how to's and tutorials, while Medium audience is more into stories and opinion pieces.

I write on a niche within a niche topic (startup exit strategies) that produces low volume compared to the ones Sam Oh puts in his video (not as surprising if it's about backpacks). So the Topical Long-Tail Keywords come into play. However, the contributing factor to low volume, low backlinks, and sometimes no topics at all kind of scare me to write. I know the topic really well. And it's very important to a core segment of entrepreneurs / VCs / accelerators. Maybe I just need your help to determine if I'm executing the right strategies. Really like your vlogs :) I guess, it can be actually a really good strategy is someone is looking for a quick spike in the traffic. The only obvious drawback that I see is the fact of not building the content marketing stack from day 0 of your blog. Yet, it's more the matter of what you're aiming for than what's the better option. Cheers! #TIM30
agree! that's why we first invested our efforts into building our own self-hosted blog to a certain level of traffic/authority, and once that "channel" was running smoothly I allocated some of my time to tap into Medium's audience

This is smart. I recommend that 99% of people don't waste their time on Medium, but if you can get into a big publication, that's pretty solid. It's essentially the same as guest-posting on a high-traffic blog.
Thanks, Brendan! 100% agree with you. You have to be at a certain point of your "content marketing journey" (i.e. growing your own blog) to be able to justify spending efforts on Medium.
I never really considered medium as viable marketing option (mainly because of keyword cannibalization and 'wasting' good content on something that isn't monetizable nearly as easily) but now I'm considering it for my new website. It actually makes me want to create some experiment sites to see if I could pull off the same thing your gues did with his 2 million views. Great video! #TIM30
Hi Tim, thanks for a great vlog. We used the same strategy as you mentioned to start at Medium to rank higher when my domain authority is low. But now we would like to create the content on our domain - to basically rank with our domain (increase the DR, potentially retarget the users etc.) What would you suggest? Keeping the old posts on Medium and "re-write" the articles to our blog? Or Should we split each Medium article into more articles or vice versa summarize the Medium articles into fewer articles? Should we republish the new articles from our domain to Medium (to get "The cross-domain rel=canonical") as Konstantine recommends or it won't affect the ranking? Thanks a lot :)
if your medium articles are ranking well and now you want to move it all to your own website - that is a tough issue :) What I would probably do is let them stay at Medium for now but publish all new articles on my own site and start growing domain authority, email list, etc. Once the website is "strong" enough, I would then republish articles from Medium (while rewriting, updating them) and on Medium I'd only leave an intro with a "read more" link that leads to my website. That's how I would do that.

I liked the metric "Read Ratio" meaning how much of your article is relevant to your audience. This is a great metric to benchmark your quality score. Another cool feature in Medium Analytics is the audience sights where you can learn about the particular interest of the readers in Medium (Technology, Science, Artificial Intelligence, etc) and with that insight you can do research along with SEO tools for the content topic for writing your next article. #TIM30

Nice strategy for Medium. I think the process you share. 1. Write outline. 2. Talk bullet points. And so. Can be a good strategy to scale up the content creation when you have less time. Like we can record at least 2-3 video per week and assign it to different writer or editors. Do you use this method in Ahrefs? #TIM30
I only used this method for writing my Medium articles, because I had interesting ideas/stories but was lacking time to turn them into well-written articles. At Ahrefs we have 4 people in our content team who spend all their time creating awesome content, so we don't need to pay to editors.

yes, you can republish your existing articles to Medium. But I would still edit it to fit the Medium style

yeah.. Medium is all about engaging content.. but it can generate SEO traffic too, if you pick topics with low competition

Medium has paid users now. It is extremely hard to reach non-paid users. What are your thoughts? I think they limit you, so limit the reach.
