How to Dye Your Hair from Black to Brown l Revlon Light Ash Blonde Dye on Black Hair

- In this hair dye coloring tutorial, I’ll show you how to dye your hair from black to brown without bleach. I’m using Revlon Colorsilk Light Ash Blonde dye on my virgin black hair. I know that dark hair is very difficult to lighten, so I know this dye won’t turn my hair blonde (it will be a light brown at most). The results gave me a medium brown reddish color that’s brighter in the sunlight. At first, the brown was more neutral but over a few months, it faded to be more brassy. If you plan to use this dye, I’d recommend retouching your roots and freshening up the color after 1-2 months. I hope this is helpful and feel free to check out my other hair coloring tutorials. :)

Tips on dyeing your hair at home:
1. Leave your hair unwashed for a few days before dyeing your hair. Your natural oils will help to protect your hair from the harsh chemicals.
2. Wear a shirt you don’t mind getting dirty. You can rub Vaseline along your hairline to prevent the dye from staining your skin.
3. Hair dye develops faster at your roots because it’s newly grown hair and there’s heat there. Therefore, DO NOT start coloring your hair at your roots or it will turn out brighter. Start from the bottom and move up.
4. To get a deep and rich hair color, you must saturate your hair well with the hair dye. If your hair is long and thick, you may need 2-3 boxes of dye.
5. If possible, get someone to help you apply the dye. Since they can see the back of your head better, they’ll make sure that you won’t miss a spot.
6. If you’re unsure about how the results will turn out, you can do a test section first. Mix a little dye with developer and apply it on a section of your hair from top to bottom. Then, foil this off for 30 minutes and rinse. The results will give you a better idea of how the dye will react to your hair.
7. If you think you’ll be sensitive to the chemicals, then do an allergy test first.
8. Take note that the dye may react differently on my hair than it does on yours, so take that into consideration. For best results, do tons of research first.
Good luck! :)

I love the "Spirited Away" touch that you gave this video. Oh my feels...
Michelle Joy Carbajal Some people didn't like the music box because they thought it was creepy lol. But if they've watched the movie, then they'd appreciate it like you and me. ^___^
You're welcome! Remember to start from the bottom and move up (since color will develop faster near roots); you can also read the description box for tips and tricks.
Good luck and I hope it'll work out (=
Hi Sanchi,
Thank you so much for your short but sweet comment
Got to know this tutorial today!Imma try it to see whether it works on my black hair lel :p
Did it work?!
I dyed my hair previously with auburn, but that's at the tip of my hair. The top to middle is my virgin black hair.
If you want something darker, you can try light ash BROWN (:
@snsdsunnybunny
What did you dye your hair with? & How light did you want your hair to be? x]
A few of my really told tutorials should work for your type of hair! You can check them out by browsing through my videos on my channel :)
wow its been almost 6 years :O came back to this video cos I wanna go light brown soon haha :P been watching you for years Thuha, thanks for continuing to make videos! ^_^
Oh my goodness, that's sooo long! Thank you for continuing to support me.
x3Haha
+x3Haha is bad smell for revoln color hair
WTH! It didn't turn blond!?!? MAGIC! lol wasn't expecting that
+Mariela Pacheco No cause since it has the ash colour in it. The colour then calms down the light parts. Usually blond hair dye on black hair turns it bright orange... not cool unless u do want it that way haha.
i have virgin black hair and want to dye it to a light golden brown. should I use ash or golden blonde dye to avoid the nasty brassy orange colour youre talking about??
Hello! The dye that I used was Light Ash Blonde. I explained in the description box already, but basically, it's not strong enough to lighten my dark hair. That's why I used it, knowing it would only get my hair to brown (:
Please read the description box for tips (= Good luck!
loving the background music from spirited away. :)
Why does dyeing dark hair blonde make it brassy? what can be done to prevent it?
the toners …. having brassy tones when lightening ur hair is usual , u cant prevent this but u can use a toner after the dye ..but first u should know that the toner darkens the color, so if you want to get a level 4 brown u should lighten the hair to level 6 which is soo orange .. after that use the toner on it to make it ashier
❤Sally Beauty can direct you to a cool or warm toner to add to your hair dye, like blue/cool for less brassy tone.
@surethangx3
What do you mean if you dye your hair a medium brown? With what hair dye?
I got it at Sally Beauty supply. You can just use any bowl, really (:
Oo, good luck on your first time! Remember to be careful and apply heat while the hair dye is in your hair. You can also read more tips in the description box! Hope it'll turn out well for you!
your hair looks great, but it is not ash at all..it is reddish brown.
In the title it says black to BROWN
@surfsup124
Was your hair naturally black before you dyed it? ^^;
Hello! You're very welcome :D I love these kinds of comments.
I'm glad my videos are helpful to you & I hope you're rocking your new hair color :)
What color do you have now and what color do you want? ^^;
Hello! The bottom half of my hair was dyed before (from the previous year), but the top half was my virgin black hair. If your hair is naturally, it can be difficult to lighten, and you may need to do it twice. Everyone's different, so it helps to know how your hair reacts to certain dye and color. &That's all learned from experience ^^; Dying hair is a risk, but you definitely learn how to correct/fix your mistakes after a while!
@f4bi3
You can use an ash brown to lighten your hair too, but the results won't be as light as comparing to blonde. The blonde that I used wasn't strong enough to color over my dark virgin hair, which is why it turned brown (:
@ToXicTeArs3000
It's because dark hair is very difficult to lighten and the dye wasn't strong enough! It's like trying to color yellow over black (x
What hair dye did you try? It might have been too weak ^^;
You can if you like. If you want to be on the more safe side, I'd say go for light ash brown. I'd help if you read the tips in the description box before trying this too! Gl (:
@surfsup124
You don't see the color at all? Did you have virgin black hair?
I always list the songs at the end of my tutorials :) This one is a music box version of a song from Spirited Away!
@xAYYSTYLISTICS
I used a bowl and brush just for the sake of this tutorial. It's much more convenient to use the bottle! :)
Over the course of like a year and a half i dont know how many times ive watched this video. The first time I dyed my hair I used the video, but after that I just came back because it's strangely addicting to watch hahah thanks for this awesome video, and for always coming back to reply to people!
I always use this dye when I want to lighten like my bangs, it does work very well my hair is naturally dark black and after using this one it was like a light medium brown. I did dye my hair black then a few months later thinking the black washed out tried using this dye for my whole head and it only did the virgin hair (roots)) the rest was black. but it does work :)
@JackieRPersonal
Your natural color is light brown but you dyed it dark brown/reddish?
If so, I'm not so sure if this would work but you can always do a test strand to see :)
Hey I just wanted to thank you SO much for your video. I was a newbie at hair coloring and I was freaking out over everything. But I watched your tutorial, bought the Revlon 50, followed your steps to a T, and I got amazing results. Thanks again!
Looks amazing! :) Best tutorial I've seen.
I love the before and after look, super cute! ^^
@slicepizza101
You should research on your undertones, whether you have warm, cool, or neutral. Then, look for hair color recommendations that would compliment you! :)
You did a great job! Gorgeous.
Wow great video, very helpful! Need to try this out.
I love you personality! :) great video :)
the result looks AMAZING on you!
I just bought this dye..i will try tonight..tq for this..its very helpful..
Yeah, you can definitely do that. (:
When you dye over the dyed section again, it wouldn't really change so don't worry too much about that. I meant to wash it with water and condition your hair. Don't use shampoo until 1 - 2 days after (:
awesome video :D. I will b dying my hair soon !
Thank you for the great video! I have dark brown hair (kinda your color) and want to lighten it this summer! Hope it comes out to your color because that looks beautiful!!!!
I love your videos, you seem like a total sweetheart :)) keep them up. I can see you becoming a model and a professional stylist !
Thank you so much! I generally don't comment on videos, but this one was extremely helpful to me, the best i've seen for lighting your hair brown! It was an amazing help. Thank you :)
Yes, this is definitely a tip I always do when dying my hair!
You're hair is so pretty, and this music is sooo cheerful! :D
Ur sooo pretty,luv da hair!!^-^
It's like the perfect guide to get cha-iro hair. Cute. :)
Are you planning to dye your extensions too? I think 1 box is enough unless you have thicker hair than mine. If that's the case, just get 2 boxes. If you end up using 1, you can return the other! :D
this was the first hair dye tutorial i've ever watched!
That sounds nice! Do you know what specific dye you're going to use?
lovely colour!
Thank you I tried looking for videos on this hair dye and see how my hair would kinda com out looking like and you just helped me out so much thank you
Awesome video! I actually it myself today using the same color, and it looks great! Everyone keeps complimenting me on it! Thanks for uploading this!
beautiful job, very pretty
I'll try this! great video
Wow .. Nice tutorial .. I really like your hair color now .. Last week I dyed my hair grape purple then after 3 days it became light brown so i was thinking how the fudge it ended like that .. But upon seeing your hair color i was happy with my hair color because it's just like your's but only a little bit darker ..
i like the results i have a virgin hair and i want to dye it the same as you but maybe a bit darker so which color should i choose? I'm afraid it wont show up much..
Wow!!! so nice color..
this came out relle good(:
oh wow that's a smart idea with the highlights, would've never thougt about it
You are soo pretty. I like that color and will be getting this😁
kitty Thank you! :) Hope you'll like your new hair color. If you need any help or tips on dyeing your hair, feel free to let me know. :)
love the color :D
That's actually so amazing that the hair dye worked on your hair. It's because yesterday I tried dying my black natural hair to a medium golden brown and it never showed up! So I was surprised your hair came out so nice!
This was such a good review! thank you :-) it looks really good btw
No problem! I hope this was helpful :) If you have any additional questions, feel free to let me know and I'll try my best to help you out.
Hey I used the revlon hair dye too but it made my hair dry and stringy. Did it do the same for you? How can I repair my hair?
This helps a lot, thank you. :) How many boxes of dye did you use? My hair's just a little shorter than yours, I was wondering if I'd need two boxes.
Beautiful!! :)
My hair length: hair ends was at the level of breast
I'm not sure that was long enough for me to use 2 boxes of that hairdye... what do you think?
Is your hair naturally black? Did you foil the strip to make sure the dye stayed in?
When your hair grew out did the roots show or had the color already faded? Also, did you feel your hair was noticeably damaged?
I'm always hunting for new ways to style my hair. Thanks for making your videos.
Peace,
Yasmin
i'm going to find that color and will apply on vacation. i want this kind of a color. so cool and simple.
I love how your hair turned out! I have ash brown hair naturally and tried this and it turned this lovely golden apricot! I am sold, and PS love the Spirited Away music box too
I dyed my virgin black hair a few days after prom using the exact brand and color! I had to leave it in for HOURS though lol but I got soo many compliments so just wanted to say thank you!!! =)
i have virgin dark brown asian hair. i plan on dying my hair this week. Would it turn brassy looking if i use this hair dye?!?!
I love it ! You made me want to try this (:
You're planning to buy extensions? If so, it depends on your results first ^^:
You are SO cute!:) thank u so much for the video this is exactly what i was looking for❤
please answer !!! which hair dye do you think is better.... revlon or garnier ???
I watched your video where you used the L'oreal Hicolor and the volume creme developer, and I want to know which way would you prefer to dye your hair brown? Which is more effective and less damaging to your hair.
I think both left my hair a little dry, but the Revlon had a packet of conditioner when the L'Oreal one didn't.
Overall, it depends on what color you're going for. If you like some brassiness/red in your hair, then you can go for the Revlon one. If you like a neutral chocolate brown, then you can go for the L'Oreal one. Personally, I like the Loreal one better, but if I were to use that again, I'd choose a lighter color! (:
I dye my black hair (really dark brown) with colorsilk 71 and my hair turn just like hers I love it!!! Thanks for the video!!!
@Bluey28729
If your hair is naturally black, then it should work if you do everything correctly. If you have long or thick hair, remember to use two hair dye boxes.
For the blow drying part, you'd just do it over the shower cap. If you're unsure, you can always do a test strand. No worries; I now how it is the first time. I was pretty nervous the first time I dyed my hair too ^^; If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me (:
Love your new hair, it's beautiful. I have black hair and whenever I color I never get the same color on my hair. So I'm gonna try blonde now. Thanks
Aw ur personality is so cute :)
i was thinking of dying my hair this color but i was afraid it'll turn out too light. My hair is black like yours before you dyed it and the result is really pretty. thanks, this helped alot :)
Wow your hair looks so pretty :) I wonder if it would look good on me since I'm tan lol I might try it though! Actually this video helped me alot :D
ok thank you so much :D my friend is a hairdresser and she's gonna help me with it and I'm going to use some colour b4 and blonde hair dye to try and lighten it on tuesday. thanks for replying! i'll let you know of the results ^.^
I alr dyed my hair a few times and i dyed it black on january. Do you habe if i tried this shade it will turn out the same?
Very helpful!! Thanks alot xx
i really want to dye my hair by myself. but i don't have any experienced for dye my hair. should i try it first or i go to salon? i'm afraid if my hair getting worst ;(
Hi Thuha! I'm thinking of dyeing my hair with ash blonde color, like the one you used. Will it come out lighter if mine is already dyed brown?
Also since you're experimenting with your hair a lot, do you have any particular hair care tips for people who like to constantly change their hair color?
I have a really dark black hair colour (naturally) and I want to dye it a dark shade of brown that's not incredibly noticeable like a brunette but still visible any recommendations on colour and a box hair dye?
Hello! :)
I uploaded a new hair dye video recently, dying my hair to a medium chocolate brown. You can watch that video and see if that's the color you like; if it is, you can purchase the same products :)
this hair colour really suits, i dyed my hair the other day, but i used a medium ash blonde hair. i must say i was a little disapointed that it came out a lot darker than yours, but its light enough for people to be able to tell the difference between my old hair colour (black) to my new hair colour (dark brown) :)
Thankyou for this vid hun helped me to decide on a colour for my dark brown hair and may I say your so sweet and pretty I love your hair its beautiful :) you should put a vid up of those red highlights I love red thinking of going that colour since everyone loves it on me and it's a christmassy colour :D xxx thankyou again (p.s) I think red all over would suit you)
Do you blow dry your hair over the shower cap or blow dry it right after you dye it and then wear the shower cap?
Love the color
Do you think it will work on both of natural black and colored hair? I dyed my hair and it turned brassy brown >< now my roots is black and the rest is brassy brown.
Hello! What happened after a couple of months? Did the colour just fade or did it grow out? I want to try this but I am concerned whether I have to dye it black again when it grows out :s
Another quick question! How long should you wait to lighten your hair again? I've done it, but I want the colour of my hair a lot lighter. I did it last week, can I do it straight away?
