  • Here are my quick tips on what boxed color to choose next time you have to reach for drugstore color. I go over the best brands to go for and what to stay away from depending on what you are trying to achieve. I also go over why boxed color gets such a bad rap, and how you can overcome that so you get your goal hair color at home without hot roots or other common mistakes. I also suggest my favorite go to at home salon quality color esalon. A personalized at home color company to give you salon quality hair results at home.

      I'm Single with no kids, and I STILL can't afford to get my color done at a salon. I use the cheapest one..Revlon Color Silk..and have had great results. People tell me it looks natural. And I also use 2 different colors..Ultra Light Blonde and Champagne Blonde. I alternate the colors, but keeping most of the brightness around the face. There may be some differences in color formulas, but I really think the application makes a big difference too.

    Thank you for this. It’s so frustrating to hear hair stylists constantly calling out the public for using at-home dyes and *never* acknowledging that some people simply cannot afford salon prices. We all want beautiful hair! It’s really tone deaf to not mention that price is a barrier, and this is one reason I love watching your videos!

      Do you have a Sally's? A tube of color and developer costs me around 15.00, if that. Then just the plastic tray and brush that is used over and over again. I get at least 2 uses out of one tube (I usually grab another color to mix with if I can as it covers my gray better) and one little developer so I'm actually saving money. I used to be intimidated to go in there and I really thought it would be expensive but it isn't. I totally understand the price thing, I'm on an extremely tight budget aka (poor). I bought a toner and it is around 6.00. If you can buy a large bottle of developer (around 20.00) you can save money as well however I can't always afford that. Just incase some people didn't know. 😊

    I used Olia Dark Blonde during quarantine to fix a half yellow, half white disaster that a supposed expert colorist left me with when my stylist was between salons. I went to my salon, MY stylist (and other stylists) actually complimented my color! She even commented on how healthy my hair was! I really like it! (I went from naturally dark blonde with lots of gray and a hot multicolored mess of highlights to dark blonde all over, and my color turned out exactly the color that it showed on Garnier’s website’s little color guide/checker. It covered everything without looking flat or dull. Hope this is helpful!)

      @spellywelly Год назад +2

      REALLY helpful. I’m in a similar situation due to illness - long grey roots and the lengths of my hair bleached yellow-white haphazardly (thanks pro)! NEED to cover grey and even everything out with a more natural finish. I’ll give Olia a bash. Can I ask, did you go with 8 or 9 in your situation?

    • @MJT66
      @MJT66 Год назад +3

      @@spellywelly I went with 9. However, I don’t know if I got a bad batch from Amazon or if Garnier changed the formula, but the last two times I used the Olia it faded quickly and dramatically, and didn’t have the same gray coverage - so disappointing! I switched to Revlon ColorSilk which is also ammonia free (Dark Ash Blonde), and it did really well. It’s not as moisturizing, but the color and coverage was good. If the Olia doesn’t work for you that might be a good alternative. Hope this helps!

    I only use Demi-permanents, in Salon and in between, namely L'Oréal Casting Creme Gloss. Honestly can't fault it!! Covers, blends greys, really nice brunette shades, adds tones to the hair, even as it fades out your greys take on more the undertone of the colour so stay blended! Hair always conditioned really well afterwards and for weeks!!

      I have seen said video! I speak only the truth. Several years ago I wanted to touch up my highlights (hairdresser2) and I came across Elle foiling her hair with I think 4 foils just on top and instead of my typical back foiling away from the face, she said “if you need a touch up bad and usually have a really light color, this will get you by” she foiled alternating a beige blonde and lightener to get her white pieces and did it parallel to the part. I remember thinking “this isn’t gonna work“. Lo and behold this bitch had done rocked the dopest blonde highlights I had ever seen... and she still has them to this day and they’re amazing.
      Of course I tried it and accidentally got a bleed mark next to my part but that was my bad. Don’t drink and foil my friends! LMAO

    I'm so glad I found this video. I had to go back to box hair colour since my hair salon closed due to Covid, and is still only cutting hair, not colouring. I have been cutting my own hair for over a year with the help of one of your hair trimming videos. The box colours that I bought always went too dark, then ended up too light. I had a very nasty experience with Garnier hair colour, so avoid that like the plague. On your recommendation 2 weeks ago I tried esalon. What a difference! I asked for a dark blonde shade and it came out dark blonde straight away. So far it isn't lightening, so I will continue with them. I have asked for a gold tone to be added to my next order colour. I am very happy with my hair colour now, so a big thank you Silvia. It's all thanks to you. :)

    super helpful video however i think it’s important to be aware that if you do the henna-based color it will be more difficult to get the color out if you decide you want to bleach it as henna is very hard to get out!

    Thank you so for all ur tips!! My hair right now is a dark ash blonde with dark brown grown roots 😅.. I am 1 month pregnant 🤰🏼 and don’t want to deal with retouch my roots so much since I am pregnant. I really want a dark brown box hair dry to much the rest of my roots but not sure if I should get a cool medium brown from L’Oréal preference or a dark ash brown I don’t want red tones also I am afraid using a dark brown and came out too dark I don’t want black hair just a ashy or cool dark brown

    Box Color CAN do a Reasonably good job as long as you know what you are doing and DON’T expect too much. Gel Or Shampoo-In Color with Ammonia will give better Gray Coverage generally speaking, they also usually lighten better. CREME COLOR gives a more conditioning result (usually) but often does not lighten as much. AMMONIA-FREE Colors will be gentler on the hair and scalp but often don’t cover Gray as well or lighten as much. L’Oreal PREFERENCE is one of the better general purpose colorants for lightening and Gray coverage as well as long-lasting color. EXCELLENCE is best for hair that tends to dry out after coloring or is more fragile. REVLON ColorSilk is a good choice for an AMMONIA-FREE colorant as long as you don’t need to cover a lot of Gray or need big a color change.

    I always do it at home with box . Few months ago I did someth wrong and not sure what. I got a red / mahagony/ burgundy , I always get some red burgundy in different brands and whatever I find at Walmart 😂. But this time my hair got so dark , almost black . I still have the black 3 inch from roots , I have to do a bleach wash bc it staring to piss me off 😩.
    But the point is how was it possible in the first place ? To get such a black tint on my hair from burgundy box 🤔

    I feel like something that hair stylist do not really touch on is that if your hair is thinning and falling out not due to excessive coloring/heat please go to the doctor. Hair does not grow from the ends but from the scalp. After years of trial and error of coloring my own hair, Sally's Beauty Supply is great for hair color. Hair color does not lift color. It helps to know the color wheel. Your videos are helpful.

    Hi Elle I love your videos and your hair always looks incredible. I have Jet black hair and I was getting ice ashy baby lights done for years and loved the color. She would do my color in 3 1/2 hours. Unfortunately, after the pandemic, she stopped working and left New York City. Since then I tried one person who took seven hours and she has also left New York City at this point and then I tried one other person who the first time did a great job (it took her about 6 hours as well) but then the second time this person completely burned my hair the front pieces fell out all together now I look like I have bangs and she didn’t even get me light enough plus, however she did the highlights. It ends up looking like an all over color instead of it looking like highlights I’m not sure why, I know she used Redken products. I don’t know if that’s why but the original person I used to go to I believe used a bottle that looks like the Schwarzkopf bottle.
    Now I’m stuck. I don’t know what to do. I tried going on a consultation and the person told me that the front of my hair is burned which I knew already and that she doesn’t more natural look than what I’m looking for. It’s confusing only because it seems everyone else is going to need 6+ hours to do my hair whereas my regional hairstylist was doing it in 3 1/2 hours And the color is coming out perfect every single time. It must’ve been the products she was using that agreed with my hair. I’ve been hiding in my house for months. I’m so isolated and not feeling attractive anymore. I saw someone in the st pushing a baby carriage, and she had super dark eyebrows, and all over blonde color that I loved. She said she uses L’Oreal number nine from the box she has all over color not baby lights but it this point I’m thinking of just trying it when I told her that I’m afraid to go orange she told me she has the same natural hair color as mine and it made her hair this super bright blonde I’m afraid to try can you please advise me before I go any further? I’ll wait to hear back from you. 🙏🏼Thank you so much.

    In my experience I have had pretty bad results every time I use Loreal products that always turn out much, much darker than expected (and I have ca 35 years of experience colouring, toning and bleaching my hair) and are very difficult to remove/fix, where as Schwartzkopf products have usually given me the wanted results. But as you say, the picture on the box is only a guide and of course depends on ones starting point.
    it’s important to a) use common sense, research the product on their website, google reviews/results (with images/video) of others that had a similar starting point, using various products (though differing textures & thickness, as well as natural/ coloured/ bleached hair starting points determines the end result, it can give you an idea of the “direction” a product will take you😉), b) not expect the colour on the box, if you are “gambling” by using a product that actually tells you ON THE BOX, is wrong for your hair tone/level and c) learn a bit of colour & chemistry theory before diving in and d) enjoy playing around, because even when things don’t alwaysgo quite as planned (unless you decide to bleach your hair to death!) mistakes can be always be fixed - and some “mistakes” can turn out to be the perfect colour you never knew you dreamed of😁👍🏼

    I used a box color (Loreal), just a level or 2 from my natural shade. It fried my hair. My hair came out in handfuls. This was about a year ago and the hair just above my ears is very thin and never grew back. It burned my scalp. I would never use this brand again.

      I use l'oreal for years now... I have a level 7 naturally, and I use a '8' boxdye from l'oreal. I now and then used another brand but the l'oreal keeps color the longest and most shiny, while a lot of other brands fade earlier or lost it's shine. I have never had problems with it, but I only dye the root area, so not always full lengths because I have long hair and I don't want to ruin it. I do actually add a bond protector into the dye , I use the Matrix Bond Ultim8 amplifier.

    Great video. I have mature, gray / mixed natural medium-light blond. I do almost exclusively salon color (all-over, roots, sometimes a few highlights or lowlights. When I’ve attempted at home /DIY color I choose demi-permanent (like they do in salon). I tried eSalon demi-permanent once and the gray coverage was almost non-existent. Also, I chose a light beige blond (always battling a bit of brassiness so cooler beige is better) and it looked quite dark. So … my only eSalon experience wasn’t the greatest. Any thoughts or comments or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

    Just a question for anyone who’s used Kristen Ess gloss…. Have you experienced super dry hair after use? I’m talking like a few months of madness??
    I have used this product 3 times because the immediate results were Fanfudgintastic!
    Then after about a week, my hair was fried!
    I was using soooo many oils and deep conditioning masks to repair the damage. It took several months for my hair to pretty much get back to normal.
    Then decided to buy it again cuz felt hair was looking dull again between color and I liked the initial feel ( wasn’t thinking that it was the issue at the time)
    The same result…. I started to wonder if it was my shampoos etc…
    I tried it one last time after my hair was healthier. That’s when I realized it’s the Kristen Ess product itself.
    Packaging can be deceptive because it looks fancy and expensive and it says Kristen Ess!
    So duh!
    I highly encourage anyone trying this to monitor their locks after a few days and proceeding weeks to get an accurate report of how it worked for you!

      I bought it on Amazon and ended up not using it because after reading much more in depth on the reviews I kept seeing a lot of people mentioning this exact problem. I decided not to risk it on my hair since I saw so many women complaining of that and combined hair loss/thinning. Again, I didn’t use it personally, I backed out after reading more of the reviews and just returned it
