As a newly licensed ham who's done his homework I advise against Baofengs. They have spurious emissions, emit out of band, no ham should use them. Also they have rubbish antennas. Once you've paid £30 for the radio, £15-20 for an antenna you're awfully close to the £60-ish Yaesu FT-4XE which is a great radio out of the box. Imho you should redo this video..
Thanks for the comment but clearly your homework was thorough enough. Some are known to be bad however most I think are fine. Also. Irrelevant of which HT you buy, you will always need an upgrade antenna as they are all as useless as the next. I won't be redoing the video as I stand by my views. Good luck with progressing through the hobby.
People say this all the time, but no matter how much research I do no-one publishes there results, just claims they have done it. I get there is a lot of hate for how cheap they are (cheaper than walkie talkies) means a lot of people buy them and use them improperly. There are also issues in the USA that some aren't FCC approved. But outside of that, I have still never seen any evidence about how they transmit out of band etc.
Ive just bought a baofeng 10W radio, can anyone help me with the little adaptor that mike talks about to put the better antenna on? what one do i need??
@@jamiew1664 No mate. My advice, taking into account the number of rip-off antennas on ebay that are made from spaghetti if you want to be guaranteed it is what it says, buy from one of the propper shops (by post). Checkout some of my other videos to see a range of different antenna options for /P use.
Hi. Yes but just remember these types of devices with rubber aerial are not so good for receiving indoors in a built up area. Take it up a hill and you will hear more. Good luck.
I have two main handies and one that is in my grab box. Two are Baofeng's and the other is my Yaesu VX-6 and its my Baofeng GT3-TP that I use most. If I'm honest, yes I have had a UV5R that was totally useless on TX in that the quality of audio was so quiet no one could hear me, but otherwise I have not had any problems with them. Is it a good radio for a beginner and is it value for money, absolutely. Thank you for sharing.
Hey Robbie. That's the thing. Everyone is different. As I prove so many times, my 5w HT up a hill gets better coverage than my 100W station with X510. Location location location
Great video Mike. My first was a Baofeng GT-3TP. Qualified last year (Foundation) and never looked back. Definitely agree with the Antenna's though I use Retevis & Nagoya NA-771. Stay Safe. M6ULU
Hi David. TBH I have only this one so I am not best placed to advise. I think the UV5R and all its derivatives is the most popular by far so I guess that tells a story. 73

I’m a bit confused, so these cannot be used without a licence even as a standard walkie talkie between 2 people say whilst out hiking? I do plan on getting a licence but I cannot guarantee on getting it before I plan on going camping.
Great content, shame about the audio. Maybe its my old ears and maybe the music degraded the quality of the sound. Either way, my preference is clear speech. Thanks Mike, 73. 2E0HWO

Glad you like it! It was just an idea to try to make it a bit different.
Could I also apply this to getting a radio just for listening and practicing on with NO PTT? I'm curious about the hobby and trying to learn.
