I always did like the interactive features of such equipment where you can modify it to suit your specific needs. Some folk shy away from re-programming and updating as they fear they may make a paperweight out of their radios. You do need a base amount of programming knowledge and the ability to follow instructions well. All is well here Fred. We are experiencing spring like weather and the days are getting longer. We just got to get rid of all the snow now. I hope the winds have subsided in your area. All the best Fred.

Hi Andy. Yes your correct. This subject keeps coming up in the comments so at least i can direct people to this video. All my Baofengs came with a wide range of freq across all bands. They are easy to reprogramme in Chirp. We have yet more wet and windy weather here. Not stopped raining all day and high winds predicted yet again for the weekend. Glad your snow is clearing. Take care bud.

You are spang on that. Was amazed to find my. Dragons(baofeng barking over a remote sensor in my yard)reacting /alarming. Im thinking this might be a plus. The feable xmiter in the sensor could be picked up as far as 2 blocks. AWay. I could walk the block and know its tripped. Can take a walk and be in the know. Rem: just switch off the baofing transmitter, and Listen Via chirp control. how simple? Kv4li 73

The majority of business users leave it on what they come programmed with, your average business buying a radio that's nit typed approvelesvrvthe 462 463 469 mhz in and is say 462 525 114.8 is most common I have the channels set up on scanner with the tones

Love these radios, mine all on PMR now, when they came, i was on our shop watch network, Finland has a good PMR service, and some shops use PMR for there service, so fun to listen, and there on public band, so the odd, high guys to them is a bit of fun,
Good video Fred, have a good weekend.

Hi Fred. My favourite Baofeng radio has got to be the UV-B5. It has a rotary encoder/vfo knob making it easier to change frequency. Also it is far more ergonomic and slightly smaller(Better for these piano/pen pushers little fingers). My favourite hand held radio is by far the Yaesu FT 60.

I have just bought a UV-5R and waiting for it to arrive. I live in North Wales by the sea and co-own a boat. I bought this as it will do the PMR bands for the obligatory lads road trip (post lockdown), the Cambrian Rally and Wales Rally GB (radios are brilliant when in a forest with extremely patchy phone signal) and as good back up of the marine radios.
We have a fixed VHF, an Icom waterproof handheld and this will make a good additional backup which obviously does multiple bands.
I can't believe I can an all in one radio that can do PMR for talking with the lads on a road trip or quad biking. To listening to what ever traffic is on the marine band and also taking it to Mach loop and listening to Valley ATC and aircraft flying through LFA 7.
I'm like a child on christmas and cannot wait for it to arrive so I can program it and start listening.

Fred, Think you forgot to mention that you should also change the mode against each channel to NFM (Narrow FM - basically 12.5khz bandwidth) to align with PMR standard channels. If you leave this unchanged then it will set 25khz bandwidth which doesn't work as well if talking to regular PMR radios.

  • @MrGrunter
    @MrGrunter 4 года назад +3

Done a few of the waterproof ones with the marine channels, you can also lock the tx range down to prevent some of the issues you mention. GT3TP was probably the better one, but not as profitable for the makers so you dont see as many as the 5r. On full power my GT3 will ping a repeater 20km away, thats from inside the house on the supplied rubber duck. Awesome bit of kit for the money.

Most Chinese handheld radios dont output anywhere near what they claim! you may find that your 15 watts is infact more like 12! or even less with some radios that are advertised as being 15w. although even that is considerably more than the 500mw thats legally permitted on 446 of course lol. if it bothers you your radio does have an option to reduce the RF output! but unless your talking to somebody else who also has a high powered radio there is very little advantage in using more than 500mw anyway! because although they will be able to hear you, its unlikely you will be able to hear them! something most people fail to consider. (unless they are on a high point) one of the very few that puts out what it claims to is the Quansheng TG-UV2 Plus which I would highly recommend.

It seems that these radios have a lot of bad and good reviews. What would be the best Baofeng for the widest frequency range and power output under 10w?

Hi. Yes. You will need to re-program all four radios to the 8 (or 16) 446 PMR band. Then they will all be on the same channels. You can then talk to your mates one at a time though not all at once like team speak.. Value wise the UV5R radio cannot be beaten.

To make you aware that if you use them on pmr 446 you are actually breaking the rules of pmr 446 as 1 thay have an antenna that you can remove, and 2 their transmit power is way above the legal power for pmr 446 so just don't do it your better off just buying pmr 446 radios and thay are not that expensive

Im looking at one of these radios for when at airsoft events. A lot of people use legal power radios ( myself included) but often struggle across the large site due to terrain. Those using uv5r and similar have no such issues. Yes this may not comply with the law/rules but are they doing any real harm?

Very easy to do and setup was done in 5mins.

This is far different then the us. In the states this service is referred to as GMRS/FRS, 446 MHz is dolled out to amateur use, the american GMRS band is allocated @ 462 MHz and 467 for repeater inputs only. This is just incase any people from the us see this, its the same principal for FRS and PMR just different allocations and PMR does not have the same repeater allocations or licensed option to use said repeaters and more then 2 watts. The us also has the multi use radio service and theres some controversy over the uk vhf equivalent. The uk is so close quarters compared to the us, so thats why u have things like exclusion zones in the uk where as in the us you probably could not even drive into the exclusion zone at a place like the VLA because its a desert and under military control. The uk police and such are almost entirely terrestrial trunked or tetra radio systems, which is digital but also encrypted entirely. The united states use APCO p25 trunking and conventional systems. They are easy to decode but can also run encryption. It is not as common in the us to encrypt but there are entire statewide systems that are. Theres also many police agencies in the us that are analog, either on a trunked or conventional system. My best advice to a person who wants to listen out for things is to buy a scanner. You will never be able to listen to trunked systems the correct way with a transceiver because it can not follow the trunking controller unless it has the system key, which a scanner can bypass with its own computer aided method. Good day!

These radios are only legal if used by Hams or private licensed PMR users. You'd probably be fine on PMR446 although its not legal and if caught using PMR446 on these radios you'd end up in court and Ofcom will fine you and take your radios but not likely to happen unless your unlucky. The legal requirements for PMR446 is a non removable antenna and 500mW RF. I'd not put the LPD frequencies in as these radios are high powered and you'd be interfering with the 70cms ham band which is also used by the M.O.D The LPD legal requirements are 10mW with a fixed antenna. I do wonder how many people buy these radios and use them straight out of the box on any frequency. Many users today within the range that theses Baofeng radios can do all use Digital modes now DMR. There are only a small handful of analog users around.

Also Emergency services are using Tetra networks now so they can't be listened too. Great little radios, they are as wide as a barn door and don't have any band filtering in them but great for the price. I'd encourage those who are interested in radio to take the foundation course witch is FREE and if you pass, you get a license to use the Ham bands www.essexham.co.uk/baofeng-radio-without-licence
