    I can hear some airband clearly on mine down to 128 Mhz, but I had to offset all the frequencies a little (+0.005). On some frequencies it's muffled or one sided and with the volume turned up you get a loud crack with the squelch closing. ATIS always sounds good which is handy for the weather. I use it as a cheap scanner and found ~18 UHF channels for MCR using a cheap SDR.
    It's a shame they don't repeat the approach frequency so I could hear what's flying around nearby too.

      I was able to modify the frequency range to 126Mhz to 272Mhz with a gap at 180 to 190 and then 380Mhz to 543Mhz. I hear a lot now! One can listen to the AM frequencies but they are a bit on the staticy side and low volume. But FM has a huge reservoir of frequencies to listen to. You might even be able to push the transmit button on PMR446 and LPR433 and nobody will know what radio you are using. If you get the amateur radio foundation license, you can even push that tempting little transmit button on 2 meter frequencies and 70 centimeter frequencies. You can listen to 4 meter frequencies as well using the broadcast radio receive feature. It can be set to 66Mhz to 88Mhz and the 4 meter conversations can be heard. I may yet get that pesky foundation license.

    • @dwightstewart7181
      @dwightstewart7181 4 года назад

      You need to clarify. The FCC defines emergency as immediate safety of life or protection of property when no other means of communications is available (97.403). This rules out most common emergencies. If you hear a noise outside, call 911. If your car breaks down, walk to a phone. If your house is on fire, go to a neighbor's house. This rule also doesn't justify the use of illegal/uncertified radio equipment (a Baofeng on aircraft frequencies, etc). You can still be heavily fined for such - not for the emergency call, but for the use of that radio.

I've a Baofeng uv5r... and two other smaller baofengs which talk to each other on set channel mode. The smaller baofengs don't talk to the bigger - that being the case - here's the DOH q - in channel mode can you only talk to radios of same brand and model. Also, emergency frequencies are published online with 7 digits... is the 7th digit a fraction of a Hz? So I guess you may feel free to doing a 101 vid for total noobs, I also think it might help a few oldies stuck indoors in the next months. Thanks Mike

      @@EportChris well, found out that if the uv5r did chat to the channel baofengs it would be illegal. Two difference classes of radio. My idea was for emergencies and feedback I got was that National Radio would be broadcasting that anyways on the FM mode on the uv5R. So... radio licence or not.. useful to know working abroad and such. Ham licence radio NW is in a little demise I would say.. if I worked in UK more I would probably start it up properly, as it looks to me like a perfect way to talk outside of b youtube and what not. It would hard to monetize that or censor it, so, go 'ed and get a licence and start talking! More the merrier. I'm still deciding on working abroad again or not, so it's still in my mind. Topics to talk about are endless, especially around here!!! Some are even positive. :-) Mick

    Is this technically illegal now (in the UK I mean)? I know they made some changes in the last few years in terms of wording of what you can listen too (something like "transmissions intended for you"?). Which is a shame, specially when it comes to ATC as its a great way to learn the brevity if your considering or starting flying! Also its just pretty intresting!

    • @itsverygreen532
      @itsverygreen532 Год назад +1

      Yes, it is illegal to recieve these messages in the UK. This is why you won't find any UK ATC feeds in the various "Live ATC" websites.

    I can't get 118.375 AM on my local airport weather conditions freq.
    Having am on these radios really a must but FM all the same.
    It's time to make them right.
    1# AM aircraft
    2# A real S/RF meter bigger display.
    3# Dual vol squelch twinband ops.
    4# Being able to disable dial display turning into a single readout if you want to use them for mono band 1 freq at a time on LCD.
    5# Green back light color added.
    This all would be nice to fix issues with tth over produced uv 5 same as all others they need a different upgraded ht.

      Don't get me wrong - it's a lovely radio - but I spent more on my scanner than the price of 4 Baofengs and I still weep at the price I paid for the 857 (and stupidly an ATAS 120) ;-) Had I known then what I know now etc.
