    I too appreciate the 817ND. I sold my previous one I owned with lots of upgrades like PegLegs and Kranker knob which is no longer being made. I also had TXCO and SSB/CW filter installed as well but then sold it. Then few years ago, I bought another used one with BHI NED1601 DSP and CW filter installed. It sounds so good on receive on SSB with BHI. Also installed PortableZero rail kit with stand which is a fantastic upgrade. If you own an FT817 now, don’t sell it like I did. It’s a really good radio.

    LiFePo4 batteries are for sure a "go" for portable radio use. Slightly higher voltage than lead-acid, and they keep the voltage until the bitter end. But of course - size and weight is the main advantages for this type. And yes, the lifetime is much longer than for another batteries, at least 10 years and 2000 charges.

    You are new to ham radio, enjoy qrp, feeling out the different modes. Getting accessories 2nd hand, making your own mods to get them to work together. You my friend are well on your way. Welcome to all the fun. 73"S

    Hi Mike, absolutely brilliant video. I am training for my novice licence and considering a 818 (not an 817). learned a lot. And your chicken are awesome.

    I must have missed that hot day. I got my 817ND because my h/b radio was too big for going out with on a motorbike. Very pleased with it. That battery looks interesting. I made a leather case and a voltage regulated mains power supply but still need a thyristor for the crowbar just in case something fails and I get 20 Volts out.

    If you can find an old cell phone case that clips on your belt that's where the microphone clip came from. I have one myself they work great.that was always surprised someone didn't try to sell that as an accessory. Unlike the little notch on the shoulder strap, the microphone in that clip will absolutely not fall off until the button is pressed. Then it releases and works my treat. Just like it was made exactly for the yaesu microphone. It also works on other microphones depending on how the mic clip button is made.

    Great video! I like the Heil headset and your homebrew PTT button. I have a Heil headset for my FTDX 3000 so I might just need the adapter. And the voice recorder inside the portable mic is a great idea too, Thanks for posting! 73 de Chris K2CJB

    hi mike the bx-148 do you have to fit it yourself and how much does it cost ?

  • @2M0TXYSOTA
    @2M0TXYSOTA 5 лет назад +1

    Mike, did you consider using a Raspberry Pi for FT-8 and use your android tablet to remotely access the Pi? That would save the cost of a windows tablet and give you another wee project to get up and running too :-) Great vid BTW, but I can't find a heil traveller for love nor money, will need to keep my eyes peeled on e-bay for a second hand set.

    I’ve been looking at buying a wonder wand but I come across the wolphi interface yesterday and noticed your using one, how do you find it ? Also did you get it from a U.K. supplier?

    • @MikeM0XMX
      @MikeM0XMX  5 лет назад

      Yes bought in UK (ML&S) but others sell them. It was OK for the job but QRP it always a challenge.

    Sorry mike could not see where you can get the replacement mic for a 817 for contesting as I am just starting to contest and would like to get one, plus with ref to your hands free kit you made is there anything on the market similar as I would not be able to make one due to the arthritis in my hands but would be great when I go contesting in the car. sorry for the long speal but I am interested in both the items to help me when I am contesting
    cheers Phil M6PGU

      Hi Phil. The "contesting mic" I think you are referring to is an old, very rare Heil Traveller headset like this. www.radioworld.co.uk/heil-sound-headsets-boom/bm-17-boomset
