    Great stuff, just switched to Mac after years on Windows. I have resisted as I use Dragon Medical software which isn’t on Mac but now use this in Parallels. I got fed up of the constant error messages and periodically having to log off and on to reset. I had a wobble for a day or so wondering if I had made the right choice but am now glad I did. Everything “just works”!

      A tutorial on Migration Assistant is tricky, since I'd need to wipe a Mac to really demonstrate. But it is pretty straight-forward. And you only need to use it if you are upgrading to another Mac. It walks you though it. I prefer to just get a new Mac, sign into iCloud, and skip Migration Assistant myself. But it is only if you are using iCloud.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад +1

      Maybe. But I don't think you'd want to. Use the built-in keyboard and Trackpad. First, the Trackpad is way more powerful than any mouse. You want to utilize the gestures and accuracy of it. Second, that old Window s keyboard will be hard to use since it doesn't have the Mac Command key and probably isn't very good quality (guessing).

    I choose to have apps minimize into the App icon instead - saves so much space... (perhaps you can explain to users how to do that in settings). Also, it would have been nice to cover the whole Maximize thing (green button) Windows users love so much. Full Screen and “Spaces” on Mac can be different - even though Windows 10 also seems to have multiple Desktops now.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 года назад +1

      Windows Maximize and Minimize are not the same as the Mac green and yellow buttons. That's something I could have included here. Option+double click on a corner of a window to "maximize" it and use Hide instead of minimize. I never use the yellow button, but use Hide all the time.

    I'm in the opposite boat; life-long Mac user forced by company to switch to PC a year ago. If it weren't for a 3rd party app called SharpKeys to reassign key layout to be more macOS-like I would have gone insane, and with a bad case of carpal tunnel from the finger gymnastics required.
    Idea for a future topic: Since switching to Catalina (my home office Mac) a bunch of files were moved and stowed away in a Folder called Relocated Items... why has this happened and how can you put hem back where they were, if necessary. It's just odd and inconvenient to have to go to Users>Shared to locate my font stash and many other files.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 года назад +2

      This only happens during an upgrade to Catalina. The System folder is read-only in Catalina. These are things that apps and installers put in your old System folder. That isn't allowed anymore anyway, so these are taken out. The apps wouldn't be using them at this point, so in most cases no harm done. They are probably old. But for developers and the like, they are placed in that special folder instead of being deleted.

    Waiting for my new M1 Mac Air to arrive next week...
    Might be a silly questions, due to being a Windows user for a number of years... I purchased Norton 360 for my Desktop Gaming PC a few months ago and can be used for up to 5 devices. Is it worth downloading this onto my Mac too? I know there's opinions that Mac's very rarely get virus's due to the system set up of Apple & the apparent slow down Norton can make to my Mac. But, having spent quite a hefty amount of money, I did not want to risk not having Anti Virus on it (unsure about Malware too).
    Any thoughts on this please? Thanks in advance...

Whether it be how much less intuitive Finder is compared to Explorer or even minimizing, expanding, split-screen, or scrolling thru open applications (the latter with alt+Tab). Hi Glenn Tonge,
      Would you mind providing a couple of examples of how you are more efficient in your work process since migrating to MacOS. I actually got an M1 MacBook Air for Christmas but recently returned it. I did struggle a bit with how MacOS treats windows but wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I’m thinking I’d get more use out of the M1 MacMini desktop at a cheaper price point. I really don’t need the portability because my old IPad Air 2 is my primary go to device when on the go. Thanks for your input!

      @@emayhand Gary at MacMost has pointed out things like cut and paste, I do a fair bit of document writing so this helped. The delete key ah yes the delete key, so on all MS keyboard-based PC/Laptops you have a backspace key and a delete key. Mac does not, it has a delete key that can only do back delete not forward delete as you can do on a PC. Gary shows you that if you use the [fn] key and the [delete] key simultaneously, you will see you now can delete forward as you can on a PC. This for me was like nirvana lol. I adjusted great to it. Now things like Gary goes over the [Command] button functions and the [option] button function again very useful. If you get a moment go look at Gary's post for Mission Control, again a major game-changer for me. Hope this helps.

    I'm a writer. On Windows at work, I make heavy use of Shift + Home, Shift + End, to highlight an entire sentence from the end or beginning of it to move it to a different spot in the manuscript. On my iMac at home, this key combo selects the entire paragraph. Is there a way to highlight a sentence on the Mac? (Disclaimer: I don't use the Mac keyboard. I work in ergonomics and we consider the Apple keyboard to be a health hazard. But if that's the key, I could be persuaded to use it for short periods.) This is a seriously helpful channel, by the way. Kudos.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 года назад

      Do you literally mean a sentence? Like from the previous period to the next period? Shift+Home on Windows should highlight everything from the cursor back to the start of the page. But maybe you are using a specific app? Which one? Or maybe you customized it somehow?

    • @ar_xiv
      @ar_xiv 4 года назад +1

      Shift + left and right highlights letters. Shift+option+left and right highlights words. Shift+up and down highlights lines. Shift+option+up and down highlights paragraphs. Shift+control changes this behavior also.
      Just option + arrows moves the cursor more quickly through text.
      Sadly there is no OS level way to highlight sentences. I think the per word highlight should be fast enough for most cases.

I want to put my cursor somewhere in a line, hit Shift + Home, & highlight everything from the insertion point to the beginning of the line. Shift + End to the end of the line. Line, though. Command+w closes the current window or tab. Use it when you are DONE with something, like a document or web page. Command+h hides the application and all its windows. Hi, I'm struggling with taking screen grabs / screenshots and then pasting them into a document / email etc. In Windows I had the Snipping Tool which allowed me to highlight anything on the screen, edit if necessary with various drawing / highlighting tools, and then paste it directly into another application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email etc.). Using the Command Shift 4 option just seems to add the selected screen grab to a file on my desktop with no option to edit it or to copy and paste it directly into a document / email? Thank you

      So after you take the screenshot, it should appear in a little thumbnail in the bottom right of your screen for a few seconds. Click that to bring it up and then command + C to copy, command + V to paste into a document or wherever. You can delete the screenshot right away with the trash icon in that little thumbnail as well.

      For text and pixels? It is. Or are you asking for files? For files, there is no "cut," only "copy." Then you can do paste or move. But the same file can exist on any of those. If you have a drive that is formatted FAT32 you should be able to connect it to your Mac and then see the files on it. I’ve had a MacBook for about a year and I’m still learning how to use it. Among the apps that puzzle me is Safari. It appears that I have to have several versions of it running at the same time all with different tags open. If I try to close one, they all close and I have to start again. What I would like is having just one example of Safari so I know what’s open and I have control over it. Another confusing aspect is when a new app is opened and
    the screen shows a previously open app, the name of that still appears at the top left. This happened several times in this video. When it happens to me, I’m left wondering have I done it right? Another problem is with Finder. I am used to having several examples of File Explorer open and flipping from one to another. This I find difficult with Finder.
    I would be very glad if someone could put me right on these things.

      I'm not sure what you are doing to have multiple Safari apps running. Do you mean multiple Safari windows? That's normal. But you can close any tab without closing the others. Not sure what you mean by "shows a previously open app." What time code in the video do you see this? You can open as many Finder windows as you want.

    • @thomaskember4628
      @thomaskember4628 4 года назад

      Sorry I got the terminology wrong. I do mean multiple Safari windows (I didn’t know one talks about windows on the MacBook). On these Safari windows there be a tag on one which runs the same app (say an email app) as on another. This means double ram space is being used for an app. More importantly, it can be confusing trying to find out where you are with this app. Another problem, if you are looking at a file, say a large text file, and you want to add to it at the end. In Windows you press Control and End. And if you want to go back to the top, Control and Top. On the MacBook I can’t see how you do it without using two fingers to go down and go up again.
