As a Mac Sys Admin, I agree on everything. Except on one crucial point. The OS update. Before upgrading to a major version make sure that your softwares, drivers, peripherals will still be compatible with this new OS, especially if you're a professional. In some cases an incompatibility can cost a fortune.
But I wish more of my customers would follow your advice.

and what about the compatibility of all those time machine back ups after an upgrade! Is it just me or is it normal to lose access to older time machine back ups when upgrading to a new os in mac book pro? Is it necessary to make a bootable external with the old os? Or is there a way to plug in the same time machine back up and somehow find all those years of back ups? I started just doing drag and drop to an external ssd for documents. I have never had to restore but not having any access at all makes me lose faith in time machine. Wish there were sterner warnings about upgrading. Would love to know what the heck I did wrong!

I've had a malware problem for over a year now on a 2010 iMac that I have in addition to this 2020 iMac. And what I didn't want to do after viewing a host of iMac adware removal procedures that required a download was to download anything for disposal. With the help of this channel I was able to locate and move to trash the adware that seemed to be able to appear and disappear whenever I looked for it before. You revealed to me different navigational means to find and locate the "TotalAdviseSearch" in the Launch Agent & Launch Daemon folders. I've searched for them before without success. And the video that helped me find the adware had nothing to do with adware or malware removal go figure. So I owe this channel a great appreciation for the help that serves all of us Mac Users. What a relief to get rid of that adware without downloading a fix what a nuisance it was. Thank you very much!

I love your video's but the only thing i strongly disagree with is updating your Mac as soon as a new macOS version is coming out. I'm a music producer and i can tell you, i've already been warned from some company's from where i own plugins that they don't support macOS Big Sure yet. So if i would upgrade, my €400 plugin would stop working. For a regular user who just use their Mac for browsing, do some light office work, like word/pages, etc... yes, by all means, update. You might even find new and cool features for those specific apps. But to professional users or prosumers, i would strongly advice to not to this immediately!

Great stuff as usual. That said, if you *rely* on a particular app or two then definitely do NOT immediately upgrade any software until you are confident everything works and is compatible. Not all developers are able to achieve compatibility as soon as Apple ships the next update. Spoken as someone who counts on Adobe Audition working perfectly at all times. :)

I've learned something from every video of yours that I have watched. Thank you so much. However, I'm going to disagree with you on point #6 of this video (Update your Mac). Twice I've had to revert back to an older operating system because a program I use doesn't work with the new operating system. The latest is I updated to Big Sur from High Sierra. Quickbooks doesn't work in Big Sur. I downgraded to Catalina and it's working again but not as well as when I used High Sierra.

Don't run updates when you're in the middle of an important project. I do mine manually, because Mac updates CAN fuck things up.

Good info, EXCEPT: as a musical artist, upgrades can be total work stoppers! Mac is notorious for planned obsolescence, and several times over the years, a simple OS upgrade or browser upgrade automatically deprecates expensive software or hardware peripherals, costing sometimes hundreds of dollars and many lost hours of productivity. I'm very cautious about upgrades on Mac - longterm user though I've been.

Backups!!! I learned the hard way, I lost 5 weeks of work data when my MacBook drive failed, and it was a catastrophe. I immediately set up Time Machine with a networked drive at home, made sure that my whole drive was also automatically synched to iCloud (paying $3/mo for 200GB), and - when I was still working - backed up all my work files to a flash drive at the end of the day, every day. Now I simply don't have to worry if disaster strikes. Use Time Machine! It has saved my ass many times, for something as small as needing a previous version of a file that has gotten corrupted. I recommend *automatic* backups to a local drive AND iCloud.
Nothing lasts forever. Things break. It's not "if," it's "when." Plan for it.

Another great Vlog👌👌👌👍..I am getting through loads of them Little by little. Have two questions Gary if you got the time.
Firstly had Mac around 4.5 years..Not a Pro, i'me more a novice. So how do I access iCloud to see what's in it of mine. I know it's full, because apple sent request to upgrade, I have now pennies per month.👍. I am sure you will have a Vlog on it looking into it and managing. Just not found it yet! Link please?
2.. On my favourites page when I start safari all the little boxes used to be coloured and tell what they are. After a couple of software updates..the icons/boxes are getting more and more grey ones and less coloured. Why? is there a fix? Link please if you already have Vlog posted also.
Cheers Gary 👍👍👍......Sorry that was a little long winded😱

      1. To get an overview, go to System Preferences, Apple ID, iCloud (on the left) and then click Manage at the bottom. But most of what you'll have is probably easily visible in iCloud Drive in the Finder and your Photos app. 2. Not sure what you mean by "Favorites Page" do you mean the Start Page? I'd have to know exactly what you are talking about to answer. Use macmost.com/ask to ask questions. Thanks!

When you have a problem, find out if its supposed to work this way at all.
One of the greatest advise that man has ever given Gary!
I learnt this the hard way. There are just one too many things that Apple does differently, which just makes clear sense, but typically we are not aware or are so used to complicate simple stuff, it appears broken to us.
Rule of thumb, Apple technology does not fail, if something is not working, it is the user - you doin it wrong.

Thank you, Gary! I agree about the cheap inkjet tip. I don't have the need to print documents often anyway. However, photography is my hobby and I like to make big prints from my photos, so I'm using an expensive Epson inkjet photo printer. I use Qimage which has a scheduled print cycle using all nozzles every couple of days. Are you familiar with the print module issues with the last few versions of Mac OS have? Its very difficult to print using color profiles on a color calibrated system from editing apps like Lightroom Classic and have prints that look like what one sees on calibrated monitors. Also the print module will never remember print settings. That's why I use Qimage. Seems like a common problem that many photographers complain about. It seems earlier Mac OS versions didn't have these issues (at least that is what I've read). I've been migrating over to an all Mac landscape the past couple of years and I never had these photo print issues with MS Windows (one of the few things that worked well) so I am surprised that Mac has this problem since I thought generally Apple catered more to the publishing and visual arts community rather than office work. I very much appreciate all your tutorials on using the Mac OS! It has really helped make the transition from MS Windows much easier!

5:42 - Some other good reasons for keeping the OS up-to-date:
    - The changes over time are small, but if you don’t update for a long time, the changes might seem abrupt
    - If you leave it too long you risk having no upgrade path to get to the latest version of the OS.
I see far too many people make that second mistake… and then moving from their old computer to the new one is a real pain in the neck. Fortunately Apple is very, very good when it comes to maintaining an upgrade path, but eventually even they have to draw the line.

Just don't upgrade to a new version of OS X if you're running legacy software that may not be compatible. I still run Mavericks for my music production boot drive for this very reason. Also, if you have a Mac that's becoming obsolete, it may be wise to stay on older versions of OS X because your CPU and RAM may not be up to the task. And with iOS, I only upgrade to 2 full versions higher than what came stock loaded when I purchased the phone.

99 cents for 50GB iCloud storage is really not much and is more than enough for most users. I have it myself for my iPhone backup and just for that, i find that 50GB is more than enough. I love itunes, time machine and photos but don't use them because of their incompatibility with windows. I tried to restore a time machine backup to a fat32 drive without running time machine and I crashed the drive. I wish macs had better duplicate finding software or par with something like digital volcano's duplicate cleaner. I have my 2015 premac life all still on windows machines and everything since on mac. Still haven't found a practical way to merge them because of file system and software incompatibilities. I'll probably never solve the problem cause I don't think I could ever go back to windows permanently. Macs are just too cool. Never thought I would say that before I got my mac. I love windows also. Both are very cool. Linux I just don't have the time but love it also. It would be wonderful if there were a simple cheap easy way to communicate between the three. I was thinking maybe if I invested in a massive nas drive I could do this? I like encrypting my data which adds another layer of complexity on top of all of this. One day I would love to have all my crap secure and in one spot.

Excellent advice. I too have been using Macs since 1986, and I would endorse everything you say. If there is something your Mac doesn't do, check all available apps. Someone else will probably have noticed it too, and written an app for it. Of course, if it is really good, Apple will probably include it in a future OS upgrade!!

I work in retail, and every time someone is buying an inkjet printer, I ask them if they print a lot of photos. If they don't, I tell them to save their money and buy a laser printer. They are SO much less maintenance that I'm surprised people still buy inkjets. Secondly: Tip #8. I apply that concept to almost everything in life. A quick example is how often people stick their credit card chip into the reader, the machine gives an error, and they think their chip is going bad. It's not by the way. Ninety nine percent of the time your chip is just dirty and can't make a good connection with the machine. Take your thumb, wipe it, and your card will work again. I see it everyday and have for years. So by using this concept, all I have do is question what's going on and then figure out the solution.

#5) leave it plugged in during a bad thunderstorm.
#6) letting the cat play with the mouse. It’s not that sort of mouse.

#10) don’t let Safari (or a password manager) remember all your passwords… without writing them down somewhere. Files can get corrupted. You don’t want to lose access to your online bank account because Safari’s auto-fill database got corrupted and you don’t remember the password, or you didn’t pay the monthly subscription fee for your password-manager program!

Don't be afraid of updates?!??!! You can tell this is someone who uses a their Mac like an office machine, not a professional. Every update is uglier (until Mojave, but even still…), removes features, and makes things harder to do. If you are a professional, an untested update can cost you a lot of time and money. Yes, there are now more consumer level Mac users than ever, and for the casual user, this may be good advice. For me, an update takes weeks of testing thousands of pieces of audio software. When you have to roll out an update to an entire department that can't afford ANY downtime, it's prudent to wait, backup, test, wait, test, test, roll out one test machine, test, wait, test, THEN update.

@Macmostvideo Concerning the maintenance the Mac does while in sleep mode: Is there a way to tell if the computer has completed the sleep mode maintenance?
If we shouldn’t shut down the Mac because of the maintenance it does while sleeping helps...
Then, why does Apple continue to offer that option?

120 down votes must be from people that won't pay for iCloud and then complain when all their photos are gone. $12 a Year covers most. You spend that on fast food at lunch. stop being cheap

You speak of spending some money in this case iCloud. There's another one; don't be afraid to make a phone call with Apple Support, even when warranties have expired. There is a usual fee for calls for old Macs; it sounds expensive, it boils down to $25 for a call; I have called support numerous times but I had to pay the fee only twice. All the other times (maybe more than 10, until recently I used a media 2009 MacBook) I was advised to do this or that, but the fee was mostly waved. These people really take time to help, screen sharing is fantastic, and there were occasions where I found quirks that had not been noticed yet. A very nice experience that will also build up confidence: which is basically what you guys are trying to do. I have watched a few to your videos and I will visit Macmost on Patreon. Till soon!

My wife hates any kind of dialogue box and no matter what it is for, she ignores the words and clicks the dismiss button (or such). That is the way she wants it to work and she is ALWAYS having difficulties and won't let me point out how it is supposed to work if you read those little warning boxes and try to understand what they mean.

Great video, as always. You are so right about ink jet printers drying up and being generally awful. If one doesn't print a lot, that is an even better reason to go laser. Like you, I rarely print, but when I do, my black and white HP laser works like a charm. I've had it forever, probably 8-9 years. I paid less than $200 for it, and they're cheaper now. I can't remember the last time I replaced the toner. I did recently inherit a color laser, but rarely use it.

    • @cavincunningham7568
      @cavincunningham7568 Год назад

Another option if you rarely print is to use a library or print store for high quality- to keep the printer from taking up space!

I can be away from printers for a long time. Being in 4 different locations I have thrown out a few printers. Laser printers don't dry up, so when I do need to replace one that is what I will do. However, I called epson years ago when a wf3450 wasn't printing and they taught me how to clean the print heads and do a nozzle check. (in the menu) Works every time. I was warned not to run through it more than 3 times. I love that printer. The other wise maintenance trick they taught me was to print a sheet at least once a week. Considered leaving it on and printing remotely but I am far to energy aware for that!

I delay OS updates, not out of fear of change, but out of fear of failure. Keeping up on updates IS important for security. But by selecting when the updates occur is just as important as when they occur. Same thing with app updates for those apps essential to your big project. I choose to review updates as they come out, weigh the security and functionality benefits against my project schedule. Nothing like an OS update that causes a system to crash...regardless of Windows, OS X, Linux, ... And unless the app update fixes an issue I must have for a project, I wait until I have completed it, or at least completed a project phase.

As far as for upgrading your OS, yeah not always. My late 2013 iMac is listed as supported by Catalina and that's the last OS it supports, but after having on my iMac for a week, it was a complete disaster and completely messed up all my media libraries Turns out I was not the only one having this issue and seems maybe Apple was being optimistic in saying a late 2013 iMac could handle Catalina. Maybe it can but only within certain parameters as far as music/video/book libraries are concerned. Luckily I had a perfect snapshot of my previous setup and was able to revert back to Mojave and have had no issues since. So I'll wait until I upgrade my iMac to a newer one.

Your last suggestion would be fine if it was true, that things are not always broken. Apple have recently been very bad at removing features which were VERY useful, and when asked about it, they just shrug their shoulders and say, “nobody else used that”, or “we’ve had to progress and that feature wasn’t required”. What am I talking about? Things like the tally which used to be at the bottom of a finder window, telling us how many files were in that folder - I can’t speak for everybody else, but that was a very timesaving feature for me and I miss it terribly. Also, screen sharing does not work between my trusty ‘old’ MacPro and my ‘new’ iMac Pro’. I used these features to control other Macs on my network. I won’t go into the details of that on here, just to say that it has now screwed my whole set-up. And, yes, I’ve asked Apple for help on these, and they are unable to fix it. That’s only two of the major ones I miss, but there are many others.

It sounds like you have simply turned off the Status Bar. Show it again by using View, Show Status Bar. Not sure why you can't get screen sharing to work, but it certainly hasn't been removed.

The video is addressing email services, not email clients. Your Mac comes with a perfectly capable Mail client built in. Really, the Mail app and iCloud email are all you need.

    • @MarsorryIckuatuna
      @MarsorryIckuatuna 3 года назад

@@j800r_aswell I actually meant both the client and the service - doesn't look like I was very clear. I've tried all the built-in tools on the Mac obviously, but still prefer Outlook - the interface is more modern and cooler for me. As far as the service is concerned, still Outlook.com rather than Google's - but I'm on corporate email mostly.

This is huge. Every tip is worth practicing son it's second nature. Two provisos- don't encrypt your x-hd without writing down the passcode with pencil and paper, or giving it to a trusted friend. Watch thise who are "helping" you like a hawk and question everythiung. I had an apple person in an apple store erase my hard drive instead of migratiung it. The next apple person was able to access the cloud but only up to the point I inadventely shut it off.
