The biggest impact of this win wasn't knocking the Vikings out or getting the Packers into the playoffs. It was draft positioning. Had the Cardinals lost, they would've picked first overall and almost certainly would've chosen Eli Manning. Instead, by the Cardinals winning this game, the Chargers got the first overall pick and chose Manning (whom they'd trade to the Giants) and the Raiders wound up choosing Robert Gallery at #2 (one of the biggest busts in recent memory). That meant the Cardinals would pick third and grab...Larry Fitzgerald.
This win wound up changing multiple franchises' futures in ways no one could've forecast at the time. All anyone could talk about (and still to this day) was how badly the Vikings collapsed and how much of a VIP treatment the Packers gave Nate Poole next week. The Packers would go on to beat Seattle in the famous "we want the ball and we're going to score" game before falling in Philly in the "4th and 26" game.
This season was the biggest heart attack/happiness/depression/amazing season ever.
ZhangtheGreat also a wild Super Bowl between The Patriots and The Panthers.
Absolutely fascinating! I've never thought of it that way.
Good point.
I wonder how Larry Fitzgerald feels about this game in hindsight. Him being a Vikings fan (and even a ball boy) as a kid, he clearly didn't like the outcome of the game at the time.
Ironically, this was the last game Larry Fitzgerald was a Vikings fan.
Dion R lol
@@wondermcthunder8835 it's true. Fitzy grew up as a Vikings ball boy, and as fate would have it, this game, in addition to costing Minnesota a playoff spot, also cost Arizona the first pick...which still worked out, as Arizona's draft pick ended up being the same Larry Fitzgerald who grew up a Vikings ball boy (oh yeah, and Arizona also hired Dennis Green).
Ironically, he's still a fan of the Vikings. They are his second favorite team.
He still loves Minnesota as he has a house on a lake there. I spends much of the off season in MN.

They ended up getting Fitzgerald, so I guess that’s a hallow victory
@@TheMan750 Fitzgerald has had a HOF career despite playing with mediocre QBs, except for Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer.
@Blue Skeptic Fitz is still healthy and playing. He outlasted both Eli and Big Ben.
Today that last play would have been an incomplete pass lol
Yep, this was the game that made the NFL end the force-out rule
@@ProjectInsight44 The rule was actually still in place up until 2008. I remember them calling it on a TD in the 2006 AFC Champ game
@@geminiman7791 Yeah I believe 2006 was actually the final year of the force-out rule because I think in 2007 the Browns lost to, ironically, the Cardinals on a play that would've been a TD under the force-out rule.

I think the Fitzgerald pick worked out well enough :)

@@chris.hartliss lol we'll have our superbowl eventually
I was at that game. The stadium was basically purple even though it was in Tempe.
In our section, there was a Packers fan decked out with cheese head and all. The Vikings losing meant the Packers were in. He went absolutely nuts.
This, of course, lead to Hasselbeck of Seattle stating “We want the ball, and we’re gonna score!” In the Wild Card. Hmmmm.
Pick Six for elimination anyone?
How was your time at the game in Arizona? Just wondering. BTW greetings to you from Scooby from near Chicago.
I was at this game too my dad is a huge Vikings fan. I was 10. Still a vivid memory.

@@BrOnCoSfAnInInDiAnA yeah but the broncos win Superbowls, unlike the Vikings. It also seems like every 5 years the Vikings start off 5 or 6 and 0 and then fail to make the playoffs
Jesushates6969 In 2016, the Vikings also went 6-0 and missed the playoffs. It’s just something that we’re used to as Vikings fans
@@Li1190 As a vikings fan I've come to learn to not assume we're making the playoffs until we win at least 10 games.
Trent Holt lol, Chiefs every single year starting off whatever and 0, 😂😂😂
I am a lifelong Packers fan and this win is still to this day the most incredible game I have ever witnessed. I remember watching all the scenarios for the Packers to make the playoffs fall apart over the entire weekend of Saturday and Sunday games and being left Sunday evening with needing the lowly Cardinals to beat the tough Vikings team. Then to be down 17-6 with just a few minutes left and winning with no time remaining! Rewatching it still gives me goosebumps.
Forgot that Emmett Smith played for the Cardinals
That part of his career never existed lol I guess some careers don't end on the best of terms, especially those of Legends
While watching the video I noticed that Emmitt did a lot of the little things that don't go on his stats but help his team win. For Example, he dove over the line on the PA to sell the run, got out of bounds after getting a 5 yard gain which ultimately gave them enough time to win the game, and after McCown got sacked, he quickly got the ball to the ref so they could get the snap off. He wasn't very good for the Cardinals, but he was still a smart player.
Ghostwolf34 yes and more importantly he made the players around him better. The Denny green cards teams weren’t bad on talent, but had no o line, run game or QB, but a lot of the pieces were already in place for their super bowl run. Warner was the answer.
Could be worse Like Jerry Seahawks, Tim Bucs or Bruce 9ers
Ghostwolf34 thats what made him great. He did everything and did everything well
15 years later and it's still odd as hell to see Emitt smith in a cardnials unform.
How have I never heard of this game before? Watched a lot of highlights and never seen a highlight from this game. Craziest ending I've ever seen!
I remember it well. I didn’t see the entire game, but they showed the last few minutes on TV.
Ummm how many 4th down conversions did the vikings allow? My god that was hard to watch even as a bears fan

@@gusmilonas4140 they robbed their selves by being too incompetent to stop even one 4th down conversion against a 3-12 team
Bears fan here as well. There were to my knowledge a lot of bad decisions the Vikings made in this game - one being a ridiculous pass interference penalty giving the Cardinals a critical automatic 1st down before Nate Poole's heroics at the end.
This was such an amazing time to be a fan of the Packers. In a 3-week span, we saw Favre's "Dad Died Game", then this insanity in Arizona, and then followed by "We want the ball we're gonna score." I've seen them win SB31 and SB45, but that 3-week span at the end of '03 is my favourite memory as a fan of this team. They may not have won the Superbowl that year, but they gave us some of the most immortal moments in the history of football.
My Eagles didn’t win the Super Bowl either, but it brought the fond memory of 4th & 26!
Minnesota started the year 6-0 if I remember correctly and folded down the stretch, only to have it end like this. Not a Vikes fan, but that’s as heartbreaking as it gets.
Btw the Paul Allen call on the final play is PRICELESS.
Here's a little know fact: of the 7 losses Minnesota took, 5 of them were to sub-.500 teams. Oakland, San Diego, the New York Giants, Chicago and Arizona.
Nah when the falcons went 7-1 in the 2015 season (I don't remember exactly what season it was) and ended 8-8 was the saddest thing ever
Aaron Brown ruclips.net/video/mL8S4G9zFK8/видео.html.
And here it is. Just fucking gutwrenching. Paul Allan's radio call
Aaron Brown im a broncos fan and experienced that, we started 6-0 and finished 8-8, but this is the nastiest way to not make the playoffs for sure. The sickest thing as a broncos fan is the 2012 ravens game when jacoby jones tied the game with like 30 seconds left; on the well known for play out here in colorado, "the mile high rainbow" I still am salty and think about that lol so sick
@@sakibfarooqui7869 that's because the Vikings do this every 5 years, everybody expects them to come crashing down from their hot start every year

I love how Mccowns the qb
Family of back up QBs lmao
You need to upload more games with these fun facts. They're cool!
Imagine if the Cards had made the 2 point conversion. They probably would have just gone for the field goal, tied the game up and gone into OT and maybe the Vikes woulda won. Hahaha. Instead, the Cards were forced to go for the TD.
Damn
Lol they should have let him score
I was at this game besides that earlier in the game the Vikings had a 4 and short near the goal line. If they kicked the Field goal it would of went into overtime. Instead they went for it and didn't get it.

Unbelievable... Kevin Williams was a beast that whole year for Minnesota, Boldin served every CB in the league a whooping. This game was a classic
I remember this game vividly when I was growing up in Phoenix. The state of Arizona didn't bother showing this game locally because the cardinals sucked so bad haha But when the crazy ending happened all the local news who covered sports went ape shit over the ending. I guess they were impressed enough the Cards could actually make an impact of some sort lol. Damn I miss the good days of football

Maybe but the Vikings would have helped their own cause if they'd scored more than 17 points against a team that was dead last in PPG allowed.
In 2003, Minnesota had at least a share of first place in its division from the first play of the first game until the last play of the last game. On this day, with two minutes to play, they had an 11-point lead against a rookie quarterback on the league's worst team. Not only did they lose, and not only did they hand the division crown to their most bitter rival, they didn't even make the playoffs. Leave it to the Vikings.
Great video! As a Packers supporter who grew up in Minnesota, this video brings me back and watching this game is a very fond memory! Thanks for sharing!!!
I was at the Packers Broncos game with my dad. We left when we heard the Vikings were up 17-6 with 5 minutes left (they wouldn’t show the score of the Vikings game at Lambeau so we got that info from a guy listening to the Vikings game on a handheld radio)
My dad and I were in the parking lot and these two guys were screaming like crazy that the Vikings lost. We scoffed thought they must have been screwing around. Then five seconds later we heard the Lambeau crowd start going nuts. Turned on the radio to find out those two guys weren’t joking. DONT EVER LEAVE A GAME EARLY!

This would be a good NFifL because of how the draft would give them the first pick if they lost unless they still go with Larry Fitzgerald
Some of those videos are garbage, though, which is too bad because the idea of it is interesting.
This is a great memory for me as a Packer fan. My Mom and I went to my first Packer game against the Broncos in the freezing cold while this one was going on. We sat next to a young couple who were really nice to seven-year-old me. They had a pair of binoculars they used to watch this game playing in one of the press boxes. When they gave us updates on what was happening it didn't even sound real, like they were just reciting the ideal fantasy situation for the Packers to make me happy. Lambeau going crazy when the final of this game flashed on the jumbo tron was one of the coolest sports memories I have.
I know we could have had the first pick and taken a QB, but I think we’re ok with Fitz
Larry Fitzgerald is obviously a great WR (and maybe the best receiver ever not to win a ring) but the only problem is that except for when you guys had Kurt Warner as QB he’s never had good QBs to work with. Palmer was pretty decent with you guys but he just got hurt too much
I agree with my fellow fan brother it would be better too have a qb then get a wr (via, draft, trade, sign)

If I recall, the Vikings lost to the Raiders, Chargers, Giants, and Cardinals, who all finished with 4-12 records and each held a top four draft pick. Minnesota completely choked in 2003.
Honestly as a Bears fan I never knew this until a couple months ago. The Vikings were absolutely pathetic that year. My guess is that Mike Tice the HC was treating his players like shit and that's why they played with a guilty conscience and lost. Dennis Green and Bud Grant would have thought twice about treating the players the same way that Mike Tice did.
Scooby Carr yeah I remember some Vikings players from that 03 team said that practices were long and hard and it wore them down, I guess that was their way of saying that Tice treated them like shit. I’m sure for Vikings fans it was insult to injury that Dennis Green ended up being the cardinals head coach the following year. I recall Tice was on the bears staff (I don’t recall the exact years)
Nate Poole never did much but this will be a moment he can cherish for his entire life.
Force out has got to be one of the more dumber rules in the NFL's history
Dominique Rosemond how
assiting the runner is needs to come back.
Considering how offense oriented the NFL is, I'm surprised they got rid of the rule. If you have possession and would've scored if not for someone pushing you out of bounds the score might as well count.
Full of salt are we?
Yeah, let's let an opposing player safley land two feet In bounds without touching them. What an absolute BS rule. Thank god it's abolished.

This can still happen in the NFL today it did last year between the bills and Ravens
I say this as a Bengals and Vikings fan: this game is more epic.
@Wayne Morris The 2017 Bengals vs. Ravens game is right up there since the Bills broke a 17-year playoff drought, but in my opinion, the 2003 Vikings vs. Cardinals was more dramatic because it was for a division title and the Vikings started 6-0.
15:16 that catch by the Cardinals it's similar to the Santonio Holmes catch vs the Cardinals
