In my experience since coming back to the hobby recently (after 20 years), it seems that people are quick to dump on Spektrum. After running nothing but Futaba back then, I decided to come back with an open mind, and got a Spektrum DX6R to race my TLR buggies with. No complaints so far. Granted, I know that the radio had a rough launch 3 years ago, but as I bought it at the tail end of 2019, it really looks like they worked the kinks out. Anyway, after doing my own research that led to my purchase decision, it more often than not sounds like people “saw a guy” that had problems with Spektrum gear than experienced it for themselves. Now, I’m not saying that NO ONE EVER has had problems, but again, just sharing what I observed. In summary, I’m happy with my radio thus far, so I may as well say that I’m happy. More often than not, people only speak up to complain about the products they use, than praise them... Positivity, people.
Nice looking DB PRO!!! I don't toss around the favorite word much try to keep it reserved but for this one IT'S A MUST PURCHASE! AWESOME video!!! You might have swayed me to buy one😂🤣👍💯👊
I'm a big fan of the SMART technology. Just bought that 130A FIRMA ESC for my next SMT10 build. Just waiting for the Spektrum motor to be in stock as I pre-ordered one.
Great review, I have not been a Sketrum fan but this radio had me interested since it first came out. The scroller killed it for me, and seeing how they have fixed that i think this might be something i definitely look into getting when its time to replace my futaba 4pv.
Pretty cool review and comparison. Spektrum sure make it a lot easier than a lot off Company’s out there. I honestly thought there was no difference but now I know
Spektrum has always held up for me, still have my Spektrum D3XR Pro works great. Thought I was upgrading when I bought my Futaba 4px 😡🤬🤬 color screen went black. I'll never spend that kind of money on a receiver (transmitters) again. Went back to Spektrum Rugged. The Spektrum rugged is affordable, the receivers are affordable can't go wrong.
I know a lot of people that have and like Futaba. really comes down to what you have. I've been buying Spektrum since I got my first one and now have an army of receivers :) Hard to move away :)
Love radio, except for battery alarm. When I set it to alert me at 30 percent, it beeps constantly as long as I drive. I only want it displayed on the screen like the DX 6R
Still jealous! Haha. This is for sure my. Next radio. Is there anyway you go do a vid on how to pic which spectrum esc to which brushless motor? This Smart tech is awesome and would like to start putting this in all my trucks.
Is the Dx5 rugged better then the Dx5 pro? Also do I need the spektrum smart batterys in order to use all the bluetooth stuff? Cuz I plugged the bluetooth module into my stock db pro controller and it broke my controller. Won't turn on at all. I was using a traxxas battery. It's the only thing I can think of
Hey mate, I have a orange dx5, for my new losi 5t 2.o gas. I don't know what to program the 3 axle 2. Should I leave all 3 on 0? And what percentage should the throttle be on. Thanks Matt
Do you know if you need to use spektrum smart lipos to acess all the features of the radio. Like if I use the spektrum esc and motor, but no smart lipos, do I get acess to stuff like motor temp?
As long as you remove the Traxxas receiver and install a DSM compatible spektrum receiver. The Rugged will not bind directly to the Traxxas branded receiver. Hope this helps.
I've had a displeasure of working with dx5ruggerd (orange one with older touch pad) and to be honest i wanted to slam this thing into the floor. Touch pad on the radio was a nightmare to use it lagged ot skipped settings. Overall go sanwa instead :P
That's unfortunate. As you saw me operating both of mine, I've had good luck with them and really like them. I think this new interface will be a vast improvement in the overall experience for everyone.
@@CCxRC well as hobbystore worker ive tried multiple radios and the best one by far in my opiniom is mt44. Theo when it comes to flying im stilo running a spektrum products.
While a lot of this stuff is cool i personally don't think it's worth twice the price almost than the dx5c. To me its essentially the same remote with a little bit added on. The price seemed ok to me when I thought they included the receiver. I appreciate you saving me some money, I was considering it as an upgrade to the dx5c. Now I know definitely not worth it to me. Maybe on sale 50 bucks less or if they still did the trade in and I'd pay 30 or 40 with the trade in.
It's very similar to the 5C with a a few extra features like the thumb control for one-handed driving, weather sealing (to make it more water resistant), rubber bumpers, rubber wheel, etc. So there is additional costs added to making it, but the electronic features look similar if you don't need those things. For me, it's really about being rugged and allowing one-handed driving.

Resistive touch screen is why. Old technology.. I like my Spektrum gear quite a bit and it’s much nicer than Traxxas if you’re into tech and details, but I’m kinda pissed that they don’t include the cables needed to update it. The DX5C should have a backlit display. It irritates me so bad that they didn’t include a backlight. It would have been so dirt cheap to include it.
Sorry have had 3 spectrum surface to surface radios including 5e rugged and have found them to be rubbish. I wont buy another. Radiolink is a far more reliable transmitter.
Radeolink. Does not suddenly lose connection for no reason has a much longer range. And binds to reciever of chosen model immediately after powering on. And there is little to no lag. Spectrum radios at least the ones i purchased let me down nearly everytime i used the. I now have two uselles radios no one at the field wants to buy.

I thought you bought 2? 😂🤷♂️ I was actually shocked by how much I liked it. Didn’t expect it to rise up the ranks so quickly.
Just got one myself and what alot of ppl dont say is that you can program your boats also with it.
Yes. Works for boats too 👍
Always been a Spektrum fan. Never once had any issues binding or getting things to work. Great review on this one brother. Thumbs up
Thanks Nick. I've been very lucky with mine as well.
Spektrum is taking over n changing the game!
I'm a big fan of the SMART technology. Just bought that 130A FIRMA ESC for my next SMT10 build. Just waiting for the Spektrum motor to be in stock as I pre-ordered one.
You beat me to it.. my green radio comes in the mail in a few days I was going to make a comparison video just like this.. I still might make one
Totally should still make one.
Green is for Grave Digger! Nice color.
Yes i remember to THUMBS UP this video!👍💯👊
RC Guy Garage I have several Traxxas RC. Would I lose my TSM?
Appreciate the info Tony, just picked up the green version, haven’t gotten to it yet will be soon, happy trailing
Nice transmitter! I would like to get something to control all of my rigs. This looks like a good candidate!
if you do a lot of crawling and bashing...it's a fantastic radio
CCxRC but I would lose my TSM for Traxxas right?
@@ScottMcLinden no it comes with what kind of receiver u have. So if u go spectrum u will have the option to usea spectrum built in gyro.

See if you can try one at a shop or RC meetup to try it out. I think you'll like this setup more than the original.
Pretty cool review and comparison. Spektrum sure make it a lot easier than a lot off Company’s out there. I honestly thought there was no difference but now I know
I didn't know either. They haven't really made a big deal about it. I'd have been screaming it from mountain tops.
CCxRC Totally

Bruh this telemetry, its insane, I wish I had the money to buy this stuff for some of my rigs, great vid tho
Agreed! I love that they are building it into their electronics for us.
Can't decide Orange or Green. Love them both
Gr8 review and video wish u more success.
Can u tell What's its control range mate?
I had one of those the only issue I had was that the manu scroller button really sucks and the rubber molding came off I know have the DX5C love it.
Halo Tony, very nice review, i consider to buy it, but can i binding it to arrma kraton 8s 1/5 stock reciver?
Thanks tony for sharing. This was very helpful 👍
Glad to hear it was helpful
Good way lose your rugged.make it camouflage lol.nice unboxing Tony
haha. You don't have to set it down. You can now add a lanyard to it :) I do get what you are saying though. lol
Today I received classic color one with rx and also has new touch pad.
That's awesome. I heard they are all coming with them now.
Love radio, except for battery alarm. When I set it to alert me at 30 percent, it beeps constantly as long as I drive. I only want it displayed on the screen like the DX 6R
I agree. The non-stop beeping is bad. The clear button should allow you to turn it off

Hey Tony, I have the V2 Infraction, Typhon 6s, and the Big Rock ordered. Can I bind these models to the rugged with out buying anything else?

great vid bro. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve been looking for the new version of the DX5 rugged. It’s hard to find the new version. Is there an actual model number difference?
Looks pretty cool 👍
Love Horizon and Spektrum.
Does it have a backlight?
Do you have any info on how to configure it for MOA setups?
You have any issues with the radio yet?
What teciver is needed to use the spectrum rugged?
Are these not compatible with the older spektrum recievers? sr3000 for instance?
Hows the build quality is it really tough?
Nice i want one for my axial scx10 Jeep JL 😎👍👍👍
They are amazing for scale trucks because the one-handed driving is amazing
Hey Tony I'm thinking about a smart programable radio 👍😎
Very cool. There are several options to choose from! One day I hope to get the DX6R one day.
Can you bind any spectrum receiver to it or do you have to get specific ones?
I’m assuming this will only work with spectrum receivers? I’ve got several brand trucks etc and would have to change receivers if so?
That is correct
CCxRC thanks, I’m still learning all this stuff
Great review!
Thanks. Bought the orange one with the new plate as well. Love it.
Is the touch screen capacitive or resistive?
Is it possible to connect the TM1000 module on this spektrum dx5 rugged with sr515 receiver for rc car? Want to use the temperature and voltage meters
Do you know if you need to use spektrum smart lipos to acess all the features of the radio. Like if I use the spektrum esc and motor, but no smart lipos, do I get acess to stuff like motor temp?
Yes. If you have their radio or the bluetooth and app
How do you like the backlit display?
It doesn't have backlit display
@@ramtrucks721 wish I knew that before I bought it
Is it the same sir with the orange version in terms of touch scrolling capabality?
It is now
Nice. I'm thinking of getting the orange one. If it is much easier to scroll unlike the grey one.
Wow thats sweet!
Could I use this radio with all my Traxxas cars. I have a Emaxx,Slash4x4 and Bandit?

How is the grave digger good videos

Can I you this radio to control a traxxas slash?
Yes, but you have to get a spektrum receiver to go with it.
