- I finally found some time to make myself a new leather satchel to carry my IPad Pro, along with some other things. As usual I've put some Viking Artwork on it, and finally I have something I can carry with me so people have an example of what I do. WHOOPS!!! I managed to release this totally not when I meant to. I'm now scrambling to finish the pattern. *facepalm*
Im still pretty nubish to leather crafting (totally your fault i got into it by the way) could you go more into detail about how dying resist and the finishing process works. i have been looking and am having trouble figuring it out for myself. great work though keep it up its always fun to watch. Im working on the dice box next.

I'm so happy to see the reality behind work like this! Other videos always show such perfection. But in real life it's fits and starts and messy mistakes.
Got any recommendations on those bevelers? Im also not a huge fan of my Tandy ones
It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm watching a leather tooling project that I'll have to re-watch again later just to actually retain it. Still worth the grogginess.

Just found your channel today! Your videos are much more detailed and inclusive to your audience. Most people fail to explain the process, tools, reasoning which causes me (and others, I think) to lose motivation after watching twenty videos and still not having a clear understanding. I had almost used antique finish without a sealer, but I used it on a test strips and I noticed a cut made into dark so I didn't I'm really glad I didn't. And it's weird that I was never told that because I actually worked at Tandy Leather to learn this, but no one told me!
I worked at Tandy for a while myself.

might want to give aqulim 315 its a water base contact adhesive.dont know if you can get it in Canada but you can find it in the us one place I know you can get it from is district leather supply.it holds just as good as barrage without the odor.

5:24 Although I would agree with you about the proper way of using an antique gel; by not putting a resist on it can give some interesting results. Sometimes by not following the rules you can get some unique and nicer results.

I’ve been doing the craft for 30 plus years and although I appreciate all the tips I find all you guys use too much glue and don’t want to trust your math as far as stitching is concerned. Beautiful work, dude. Your tooling is superb.
Not quite sure what you mean by math, would love an example so I can ponder.

Finally someone who is not afraid to show their mistake. Awesome video! I thought you would have kept using the Cobra cylinder head sewing machine for the rolled edges.
Best video I’ve seen on leatherworking this year by far! I have all of the machines you mentioned but, never see them being used and greatly appreciate your inclusion of them. I also greatly appreciate the very honest narrative. I learn by my (and your) screwups much more than any other method. Exceptional work and of course, your editing and cinematic skills are top notch!
I’ve tried many of the water-based contact cements and none have been any good. Only application I’ve found they excel at is attaching synthetic fabrics to leather. I use them for gluing synthetic zippers into leather before sewing. Just strong enough to keep it in place but, not a bit more.
I use a book binding PVA glue called Jade 403. You can get it on Amazon. I've used the white cement from my supplier but it doesn't seem to work as well. Jade dries quick though, so fair warning haha.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop No problem, hope it works the way you need it to! Can be annoying getting the bond you want without that harsh chemical smell.

I use Seiwa Leather Glue. Water based. It dries FAST and once the two pieces when they contact are like cement. 10 of 10 would recommend. I won't use anything else now.
How toxic is it? Trying to find that happy medium of bonding strength vs death smell
@@DarkHorseWorkshop It is NON-TOXIC. No foul smells. Incredible strength hold. Still pliable after drying.
I get it from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply, sure it is available from many vendors.
They are the makers of Tokonole. Highly recommend. I will not go back to contact cement after using this.

What are the finished dimensions of the body of the bag?
12" x 8" or so since it's a bit bigger than iPad sized.

Ya, as wet as tooling but with no drying time... maaaybe wetter.

I've a question on the larger carving piece. Is that Tyr and the Great Wolf, son of Loki, Fenris (also called... is it Fafnir or fenrir?) and... Tyr's severed hand?
So is that scene is The Binding of Fenris?
Sure is. The strap across Fenrir holding the antler tip is my artistic interpretation of the binding.

What Leather Beveler do you recommend
I have a few of the regular Tandy bevelers that I like, there should be links off my amazon storefront (link in the description) Don't get the keen bevelers or pro bevelers.
Fieblings makes an excellent white glue that U should try.✝️⚾🙃

How do you clean the airbrush after using resist with it?
Dye reducer?...
Honestly I fire water through it and then hope it doesn't go to crap. Sometimes a cleaner or acestone. But quite often unjust use water.
What sre the weights that you use for the patterns? It looks like a simple cut of aluminum with a handle added. Is it custom or something that can be purchased from a particular shop?

Baby steps, find something you want to make that's not too crazy, get a small assortment of tools, and grow it from there.

Is Oiltan leather water resistant or to a certain degree??
Honestly I always assumed it was a bit more resistant but never honestly looked into it.

When using the resist, do you have to use a spray gun?
Nope, you can wipe it on, with a very lightly damp sponge, do a couple of coats. Harder to avoid streaking and since Ikinda of went straight to a spray gun I'm not the foremost expert on not using one in that case. :) leatherworker.net is a great resource though

What kind of material do you use to cut your patterns in the beginning of the video? I’ve been looking for a nice sturdy material to use for some patterns of mine
A good one is manilla folders. I'm cutting manilla card stock off of a roll usually or just using some brown paper from the hardware store.

What are the weights you use in this project?
My studio mate Levi of Drawbridge Props made them. Seamstresses use fabric weights, he made some heavier ones for leather.

I've added a card at that time, it's my kidney pouch video. This video wasn't supposed to go up when it did so it wasn't finished, the pattern I'm still working on. :)

Adding an antique without a resist is not "wrong". Some carvings need the sharp contrast some don't. If your carving calls for contrast add a resist if not then don't.. There is no right or wrong way it's subjective.
Everything can quickly become subjective with that way of thinking. 99% of carving is going to look better with contrast. But in my opinion if you want less contrast you should be dying your piece first, then using a resist, then applying your antique. Just muddying antique on a project is incorrect, again, in my opinion. Not to mention antiques don't penetrate well, any scratch is going to pop through if you haven't dyed your project when you want less contrast.
