This is probably what will happen to 80% of people 10% forget about the Jam, 4%wil give up on there ideas and only 1% wil actually do the smart thing and finish there game without stress.
Me too! I can’t wait to stare at the theme for an hour or two, drawing a blank, then eventually just give up and watch everyone else do cool stuff on the discord!
Remember, twice the time doesn't mean twice the game. Realistically, you should expect to be able to do about 1.5 times as much in 2 times the time, as you can't crunch as much as you would over the shorter period. And the extra time will probably mean a higher expected standard, so allow extra time for polish. Pace yourself and make something amazing. Good luck everyone.
The badge to denote those who worked only Weekend is the best thing ❤, I cannot work whole week and as many good games I have seen in last few years in 48 hrs , they will make more beautiful game in 5 days , So As a 2 day worker I cannot compete , but as you mentioned 48 hrs submitting It makes me so happy. Thanks
I am sure there will be a winner for the 48hours category and those different categories won't be compared directly. they solved it the best possible way
As just an onlooker, still gotta respect the consideration for people's time and sleep schedules! Always fun to see what folks come up with, and curious what manner of difference the extra time show for it.
I'm doing it this year. I'm finally going to put my anxieties aside and do it. i don't care if everyone hates what i make or doesn't give it the time of day. I'm joining and I'm making something.
As a writer and master's degree student, you should never ever ever care about what other people think. It sounds cliché, even dumb, but its a literal truth. Here are the reasons: 1) You are literally incapable of pleasing everyone. On the simple basis that tastes differ. I was just watching a review for Rogue Prince of Persia, and my initial reaction was "I dont like that sort of combat." I am sure other people do, and thats fine. There are many games out there, I dont have to play *all of them*, and they dont all have to be made for me. 2) If you try to please everyone, you will please no one. "I just wish this game had more of [element]" will be said by everyone. You doom your piece to, at best, mediocrity. 3) Thus, you should only try to please *yourself*. Sounds selfish, doesn't it? But truth of the matter is, if you make something you dont enjoy, it crosses over your art and reaches your audience. They are likely to notice your lack of interest, and lose it themselves. Even if you somehow camouflage it enough, and reach success doing something you dislike, you've now found a niche you don't like to inhabit. In this way, only by making things you enjoy, can others enjoy it. 3.5) Having an audience that enjoys what you enjoy is a surefire way to achieve some ressonance. If you hate what they enjoy (for example, working on a generic modern game thats popular right now), you cant really focus on their favourite parts and enhance them the way they want it. You need to see and understand your topic in the way a fan would. *You need to be your biggest fan.* As an aside, 4) You will only get better by practicing. Not lifting weights wont make your muscles stronger, not playing piano won't make you a better pianist. Do what you enjoy, and do it plenty.
From my game jam experience, everyone is a lot more encouraging than you might think. As long as you play and rate other people’s work, you’ll probably get a couple plays on your own. The criticism you do get is never mean, either.
Honestly, props for adding more time and promoting sleep as a part of it. While Game jams should celebrate doing what we love, it should not reflect bad work practices often seen in game companies. Looking forward to this year as well!
Sweet! Only four days to learn how to use a computer, learn to code, learn a game engine and then make a killer game, I think for my first game I'll make a multi online open world shooter VR with dragons and generated robot zombies..got a good feeling bout this
Thank you for announcing this so far in advance. I look forward to a few jams each year, but sometimes the organizers wait too long to announce the dates and I end up having too many conflicts. Thanks, Mark. I really appreciate all the work you do!
I wish the extra two days were earlier instead of later - that way you could have ideas and brainstorming and then crunch dev time over the weekend. I work in the week, so won't have any real time to dedicate the last two days in collaborative capacity.
Yes! Very excited what all you amazingly talented folks cook up this year! I'm only a player, but every year I'm blown away with what y'all can accomplish in such a short amount of time.
I am so excited!! Your game jam is always been my favorite and the first one I submitted to!! Got me into the friendly competition format of game design!
Consider hosting a game "document" jam at the halfway point between full game jams. During this event, participants can plan out a game in detail without actually creating it. This allows intimidated or busy individuals to participate, share cool ideas and concept art, and gives them a significant head start if they decide to develop the game in the future.
I feel like it's going to be a lot harder to get people to read through hundreds of powerpoint presentations than to playtest hundreds of games and prototypes. Gameplay is a much better way to experience someone else's concept and while the idea is cool, I don't think it really makes sense on such a big scale
Man I thought this was going to be in June or July hahaha. I booked my trip to Europe on Augest 16th so I would be able to do the jam. Mark brown you have done me dirty
I'm a long time viewer, who never writes, and is always late, but I always wait till summer to enjoy this contests. And, as an artist, I need to say, that this community is wonderfull
this will be my "exam" in making games! really want to learn to do it so I'll have plenty of time in the summer to do so and then put all of that to the test. looking forward to the event!
This is the first year I’m unable to participate in the GMTK game jam since my first year in 2021. So sad I’m missing out on it. Good luck to everyone who joins!
It's kinda funny that you mention the sleep part, since last year's (my first jam) I did pull an all nighter and submitted on time but it was tough. Luckily, I can ask for vacations at that time if all goes well at work
Mark I loved trying out your jams learning godot past three years. This time I have been truly sticking through a course I found and learning a lot from it. So this year I compley feel ready to actually complete a game for a change for this jam. :)
The people talking about how LONG 96 hours is for a jam really give you perspective on how much crunch time goes into jam games... I'm glad everyone's getting more time. I still feel like it's too little.
I had fun last year for my first go but it was definitely kind of an exhausting experience, so I really appreciate the extra breathing room. See you in August!
I've started to learn game deving this year and I feel like I'm ready to really get into a game jam. I already went into one but I failed from a lot of inexperience. But I've recently been developing a web game and I feel like I might be able to make a first release before the GMTK Game Jam starts. Maybe by now I'll have a little more experience to make things. I'm wishing everyone luck, especially to new game devs here!
This will be my first GMTK jam. Idk how but it'll be 😅 After so many years of looking at other people's submission & now knowing how to make games, I pack my courage to climb 🪜 this mountain 🏔️ this time. Hopefully my face will not be destroyed by my sleep 🤣😂🤣😂
4 day jam is awesome! Having done both 2 and 9 day jams, I was just saying the other day that 4 or 5 days would be perfect: enough time to cook up something crazy, but not too much that you get overly exhausted/burnt out. Super excited to see what everyone makes this year!
I have been looking forward to doing my first game jam and this would be my inaugural one (more than a little nervous about sharing my ideas and yes, complete newbie) but it is the one weekend I am away. Oh well, I get to put it off for another year????? I can't wait to see what you guys come up with
"Game jams should be fun, not yet another chance to crunch"
(Devs proceed to crunch for 96 hours instead of 48)
“Given the opportunity, players will optimise the fun out of a game”
I never crunch for jams, and that make me often not have enough time to finish a game properly, so having more time is really great for me!
@stevencraeynest7729 you're a healthy individual
I plan to give as much time as I can to this jam (with time to sleep, of course), even if it means I don't finish the game.
This is probably what will happen to 80% of people 10% forget about the Jam, 4%wil give up on there ideas and only 1% wil actually do the smart thing and finish there game without stress.
I'm so excited to not finish anything again this year!!
Me too! I can’t wait to stare at the theme for an hour or two, drawing a blank, then eventually just give up and watch everyone else do cool stuff on the discord!

Here comes the new biggest GMTK Game Jam ever
And we think youre gonna love it!

Probably the single largest game jam period right?
@@elnico5623 Right!
Just like last year, and the year before, and the year before that….
One of these years I’ll participate… maybe
I love how every year the date changes and every year it's exactly when I had my holidays booked :')
Good luck to all participants!
its also during the brackeys game jam, im not sure who planned this lol
You got 3 months to replan that holiday. If you really want to participate, make it happen!
For me it’s right when school starts
Yeah same I'm travelling back to school the exact same days
For me Its always 1 or 2 weeks after my holidays end 😢😂

1:08 WOW, You already finished Mind over Magnet? AND in under 48 hours? Damn, i thought it's been 2 years
@Why_Fred lol, funny!
Great change to the dates. Really opens this up to people as their first game jams
I've never done a Game Jam before and this might be my first one for this reason.
