      Exactly. No matter if he got the ball high post or low post he terrorized defenses with his skill set and quick decision making. I remember when games got intense Pau more than often bringing the heat, getting to the line and never backing down. He complemented Kobe so well and matched him in intensity and competitiveness like no teammate did before which made them develop a mutual trust and understanding of each other that made their game seem telepathic.

      It has nothing to do with less defense, it has everything to do with the style of offense being harder to defend because of pace picking back up to where it was in the 80s combined with the extra 3pt shots that are being taken. Edit: Also you are wrong about today's average scores and you are wrong about the average scores of all-star games 10 to 20yrs ago. In 2021-22 the leaguewide ppg was 110.6ppg compared to 110.8ppg in 1984-85.

    It's a shame he was overshadowed by his teammate Kobe's legendary status and Dirk's (another great European PF with clear similarities to Pau) amazing championship run. Pau played the game the right way, a product of both skill and hard work. He is a hero in Spain; undoubtedly our greatest player ever and gave hope to an entire generation of athletes that they too could perform at the highest level. He understood that his fame required responsibility, and became an exemplary role model on and off the court. As their relationship reflected, he was the perfect co-star alongside Kobe Bryant: a do-it-all big man with good handles and shooting, and great passing and post game, that operated inside while Kobe worked around the perimeter, but could step out and give Kobe space whenever he needed it. A good shot blocker and rebounder to complement Kobe's great perimeter defense. A winner, on and off the court. A true legend in every sense of the word. #ThankYouPau

    • @timeflies313
      @timeflies313 2 года назад +11

      It’s because he was like another Kobe. When Kobe talked shit to some of his teammates they tend to get intimidated or back down, but Pau was different. He rose to Kobe’s challenge and became someone who Kobe couldn’t just boss around, he became Kobe’s second option.
      I saw an interview of Kevin Garnett years ago where in he claimed that Pau was just another “Soft European White Boy”. They used to bully and body him all the time. But after the Celtics beat the Lakers in 2008, something changed in Gasol and they couldn’t just push him around after that. That is why when the Lakers beat the Celtics in 2010, it was a sweet moment. They got their revenge.

    • @taladrocule
      @taladrocule 2 года назад +2

      Apart from being the perfect complement, the reason is the European training and its cultural generation. In Spain he was educated with the values of companionship and team play. He grew up as a player, but his ego and other bad "team play" attitudes did not. He was already a star but he always knew how to be a person, an IQ above average too and a leader who knew that he needed the team and fought with that to win
      The other part was put by Kobe, it must be remembered that he lived in Italy as a young man, he understood that mentality and form in the same way, and he knew how to see and help Pau in the process. He was the leader instead of looking for personal bombast from him, he struggled to improve the team.

    The Game 7 play against the Celtics late in the 4th, triple teamed, and fouled to make the lead 6 should be higher and is what made him so legendary.

    Never the strongest or the best athlete at his position. That’s for sure! But boy did Pau Gasol ever make up for it with his skill and heart! What an excellent Robin he played to Kobe’s Batman! And really those entire teams had so much camaraderie and talent, Sasha Vujacic, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, Andrew Bynum, Derek Fisher, Ronnie Turiaf, Luke Walton, Trevor Ariza, Jordan Farmar, Shannon Brown… just to name a few!! So many great memories growing up a young Lakers fan in that era!!
