I get uncomfortable when the faunous racism is brought up because we've barely seen any of it and from what we've seen it's rare. It bothers me more when it's treated as if it's a huge problem in remnant.
This song leaves me feeling...conflicted. Yes it’s parents telling there daughter what’s what and I believe it’s out of love. But there really telling her “eye for an eye”
I kinda feel like the “show them how you smile” part can be like solving things without having to raise your hand at them like a protest instead of a riot

Ilia was a Faunus who had a chance to be a good person but she was manipulated by the way of the white fang and what she did she continued to hurt people never stopping until Blake stops her

Such an awesome song man, I love Ilia. But man I hate so much that she was redeemed. She was such a more exciting and interesting character as an anti hero. We know that she hates humans as well, does she just not anymore? For some reason. It might just be a personal thing with me. I tend to be less interested in an anti hero character when they're 'redeemed'
I just realized how clever it was that the gay character was the one who had the ability to hide her faunus traits. Unlike a race, homosexuality doesn't have any noticable differences unless the person shows it( like a chick kissing another chick). Illia is "normal" unless she chooses to show otherwise. Pretty clever, writers, pretty clever.

Also it's clever that her last name means rainbow, which alludes to her color changing abilities and her sexuality since rainbows are the symbol of gay pride. I always thought they plopped in a gay character bc everyone was complaining about representation but this seems pretty thought out.
They had to have done this intentionally, they just had too. Honestly Rooster Teeth have had done very questionable thing in the show *Cough* the battle of Haven *Cough* but you have to give credit when credits due, it’s the subtle things that sometimes matter

I actually believe that illia's parents arent singing the whole entire song. they want her to smile, to be happy, to get the education she wanted.
they *dont* want revenge. in the fight between blake and illia blake asks illia "would this be what your parents wanted?" and illia answers with "I DONT KNOW". they dont want her to get revenge. the white fang do. the white fang twisted the meaning of her parent's wish. you can also see it as the ending of the jungle theme is switched with eerie silence at the line "take what you need, leave them to bleed". this shows the effect the white fang had on illia. she was misguided, trapped in the belief that if they'd only fight, they could win! the words didnt work, they arent changing, we must act!
at least thats what im thinking. I think the change in theme of the music is there for a reason.

I think they might have put the idea in her head, not out right revenge but that she shouldn't waste her time and energy on them cause if they knew the truth they wouldn't do it for her either. The white feng just took it to its extreme and like its stated in video it woudl show that the faunus had these thought for a long time simply only now acting on it
I wish rwby would do a season anthology like RvB season 14 so we can put some time into the fanus racism storyline
I just realized. If Ozpin has been around for as long as it’s been implied, then that means he was probably around when the Faunus were starting out and there’s a good chance that he took part in the discrimination, if not influenced it to a degree. If this is true, then that’d be motivation for Blake to turn against him, Yang is already questioning him, and if summer was killed in a mission for Oz then that gives Ruby a reason to turn against him. Jaune has Pyrrha’s death. All that’s left is for winter to be killed for Weiss to turn, and one of Renora for the other to turn (or they just see everyone else turn and follow along). In my mind, it’s not as far fetched as it once was for something like this to happen
With what happened in Vol 7 and what Vol 8 seems to be leading too. This seems more likely than you would think.
What I love about Jeff William’s lyrics is how deep they are. Not only do they expand the narrative of the show but comment on the reality that we find ourselves in. Let’s be honest here, this song is very relatable to the tensions that exist between the people of the world.

This song can be applied for any kind of group of people who are traditionally oppressed and abused for the sake of those in position of power. A few major examples being, non-white people, women or female bodied people, and lgbtq+ people....in a historic and political sense.
There's more if you count daily life discrimination and oppress.

Ya know as a First Nation of North America I've always rooted for the Faunus in RWBY . Though the parallels have always hit too close to home for me . For so long my people were and still are in many ways treated like second class citizens in our own homeland.
Makes me wish Rooster Teeth would actually do something worthwhile with this racism subplot thing they got going. Ilia , Blake,and hell even Adam are a good start though. This song is also great, was getting sick of Blake being too accepting lately in her songs. I mean as a former member of the White Fang and girlfriend of Adam you'd think even now she would somewhat agree with the fact things need to change and that change may not be entirely bloodless .
After all point to any significant social upheaval in our own history that wasn't accomplished without blood, sweat, tears, and yes even deaths.
I think the reason the ‘for you’ is quiet is because they don’t tell her that, they make her think she is doing it for all Faunus When they really know there is no way to change it for all.
Ohhhhhh!!! I thought it was Raven Branwen's Parents (or like her backstory??) I don't know, for example like u know how Raven and Qrow's tribe told them to pretend to be normal huntsmen academy, and then kill them later on, uh i dunno but this makes more sense

Yeah, the thing about me is that I never once despised Adam, Illiya, or the violent White Fang for using drastic measures to get humans to listen and "respect" them. Sometime you just gotta do what you gotta do, you know. I only felt sorry that Adam became blood thirsty and, as Blake has said, spiteful. I didn't felt as bitter for Illiya cuz it was damn obvious she was getting a redemption and she was presented a lot more regretful for her actions even if she did do them.
I love this song, its one of my favorites in the whole series... but sometimes it feels like the Joker snuck in some lines here and there.

To me, Rooster Teeth's strong point is making music. Seriously they put a lot of meaning, value, emotion, STORY, and CHARACTER in their songs more than the show itself. From Red like Roses part 2 to Time to Say Goodbye and from Sacrifice to Divide, why are THESE shown more?

I just had a thought.....what if Ilia's parents weren't chameleon faunus (not sure of the plural here) but were two different faunus types? Biologically, the only way Ilia could end up as a chameleon faunus would be if
A) both her parents were chameleon faunus as well
B) At least one of her parents was a chameleon faunus and the other was human (doesn't feel as likely, since the song makes it seem like they both had faunus heritage) or
C) Both of her parents were different types of faunus, and so her chameleon faunus traits were "random" (based on what was in the World of Remnant short about faunus)
I mean, it would put so much more weight to their decision to enroll her in an Atlas prep school. If nothing else, it made a unique opportunity for them to give their daughter a chance at a semi-normal life free from the oppression they surely endured on a daily basis as mine workers. I doubt we'll ever really know, or if it really matters in the grand scheme of things since they're dead and there is little reason to bring them into the story. But I just thought about it since some of the fanart I've seen has both as chameleons, and I'd be curious to know if that is accurate. I mean...Blake's parents are both cat faunus so she got cat ears (not 100% on what TYPE of cat faunus, since the only traits they present are ears and claws but it's not important) Just wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone had any thoughts about it.

I think most of Smile is more about Ilia twisting her parents advice rather than them giving it. The intro is certainly her parents but the end of the intro “take what you need...” is Ilia, note the distortion in the voices. It slowly turns to Casey’s voice, defining that it’s now Ilia’s thoughts. When Jeff comes back, he’s talking about how she’ll know to end it in kindness. Then the distortion in the voice comes back and Ilia’s thoughts come back disguised as her father and this continues for the rest of this song.
I always thought this song was Blake’s parents talking to her. How do you know this about ilia and her parents? What are your sources for this information?
2:43 I think you got some of this wrong. I don’t think ilia’s parents were trying to forcefully steal and break the humans rule nearly as much as they wanted ilia to be proof that humans and Faunus are the same. They smile the same, and no one would notice the difference. Take what you need suggests that they want ilia to take the lifestyle of a human because she can. I don’t think it makes sense for ilia’s parents to be violent in their methodology. They resist, but they’re not extremists.
Im honestly a wolf in sheep's clothing. When people hurt my feelings i just show them how i smile. I respect the faunus. I wish i was a faunus so i can help both races and tell them to not to judge them because on how they look like, but judge them by how they act towards you.
i love how that in the show, the writers use the humans' hatred and judgement towards the faunus as a way to show what's going on in the real world; racism, xenophobia, and homophobia all tie in with this. When there's something people don't understand, they spread lies and rumors about said things, and in all honesty, it makes me sad to think about.

What is Iliya's(probably spelt wrong) semblence? Each fanaus has their semblence as well as a physical type ability and her physical trait is her chameleon skin but we don't know her semblence.
She might not have discovered her Semblance, As she has taken to relying on her faunus trait

When I first heard this song I burst into tears. It was so beautiful and I got what it was like for ilia. She had to hide her true self for so long. Pretending to act like them, pretending not to care as she constantly heard her kind being insulted by the students. Thank you for making this video. I liked it ALOT 👍👌

Has anyone everyone ever wondered why Illya didn't just say that her skin changing colors was her semblence? It's always seemed a bit of a plot hole to me.

I know that but why did the girls at Illya's school assume it was a faunus trait. In a world where people can burst into rose petals, create shadow clones, and survive being hit by lightning these girls jump to the conclusion that Illya is a faunus because her skin can change colors.
