I don't think "Squandered" is the best term. I think it would be more "Shattered Dreams", which would make sense considering his Light World version is glass, probably a piece of shattered glass
That was what I originally called this theory - the 'ShatteredDreams Theory' (which was also included in my discord handle). Although looking through a piece of glass and watching your dreams get *shattered* is... well, actually very fitting.
Honestly, this is about as good as it's gonna get for a shadow crystal theory with what we have. I can imagine how the shadow crystals can have some future plot implications or even some implications for the metanarrative. Makes me wonder if the thing that Seam wants to build with the shadow crystals could be an item that can make a lightner powerful like the secret bosses either through the rejection of their dreams or maybe as a way of seeing the truth of the dark worlds and rejecting your suspension of disbelief of them (like how the secret bosses, although mostly Spamton, reject their dark world). I don't know, this could go anywhere from here, but I guess the weird route kinda showed how a lightner can get stronger by rejecting their suspension of disbelief of the dark world, so maybe I'm not completely off the rails. Also, I cannot wait to see how the next video's gonna turn out, and by the looks of it, it's gonna be VERY INTERESTING.
So, I know that there are some loose parts of this theory. Jevil is one of them - as his backstory isn't entirely known. All I could deduce was that Jevil most likely always had the Shadow Crystal, and that it formed inside a discarded joker card hidden beneath the cabinet. Perhaps a particular player, in games, utilized the Joker card to great effect, but then they stopped playing - which could *theoretically* fill in some of the gaps, however, in that situation, we are literally just making things up. However, I don't think we will receive any new information about Jevil’s story. We probably won't have a 'Jevil Sweepstakes' or something to that effect. Rather, the burden of proof will lie in chapters 2 and onward.
Not only does this make the most sense when looking a Deltarune in a nutshell. Its also amplified by how Toby loves to use Hopes and Dreams as a theme. Showing how characters deal with squandered dreams the wrong way is a great narrative continuation of themes that have already been established. Perhaps this is all leading up to a greater truth on the subject. Its still a bit strange how the crystals actually work, and I'd love to know who's squandered dream created Jevil's crystal. But, when it comes down to questioning how the crystals where created, I can't think of a better theory.
I've never heard someone argue that perhaps Spamton only gained a shadow crystal once he got the NEO body. I like how unique the concept is, as if Spamton's goal was just to become a big shot again but once he looked through the shadow crystal his motives changed.
True. I agree with this. Through the shadow crystal, you see not a dark world, but just a room. Through a shadow crystal, Susie is still giving you a cold look, because the adventure never happened, or at least never opened up her heart.
I really like this! It fits I think narratively, and it doesn't fall into any of the pitfalls I've seen before. Like say, arbitrarily believing that Shadow Crystals can literally only do One Thing for no reason. Especially when we find out that Seam can manipulate them into a powerful item right away. I really like thinking that Jevil always had the Shadow Crystal as well, because then that could imply when we receive The Shadow Crystal Super Item™ from Seam, the 7th and "final" shadow crystal is actually theirs. Then we can use it on the final secret boss, and it won't just be a Majora's Mask situation where you only get the super item for just the final boss (which is still really freaking cool btw, I love MM. I just like using cool things in more places.)
so this may be completely incorrect but i thought i'd mention it anyways, i always interpreted the description of Susie through the piece of glass as almost some sort of omen of future events, as if Susie has witnessed or found out that Kris committed some great atrocity and is disgusted with them, which is definitely something Kris would fear, is something happening that would cause Susie to become disgusted with them
I never even thought about hopes and dreams being a part of the shadowcrystals, but it makes so much sense. Looking through them in the dark world makes you see the light world, as the place of your dreams is shown for what it truly is, and I didn't even know about the susie dialogue with them until this video. Keep up the theories! I'm very interested to see what's next :)
Ooo this is a good theory. I like it a lot. Jaru's Groundhog Loop theory is very convincing but shattered dreams theory is equally as strong to me too.
I would like to mention how if you didn't get a shadow crystal in chapter 1, but got it in a different save state, it pops up with a jevils tail to the west
My best guess, is that the dark crystals are a counter part of sort. Shows darkners the light and lightners the dark. Both darkners we see hold this wants freedom, (wich is my best guess for what [hyperlink blocked] means too). It's also what Kris wants too, though instead of guiding us to it, it shows the end, nothing. It might break facades or maby just shows alternate realities, I dunno. Guess we'll see in chapter 3.
This is a very good theory and definitely makes a lot of sense from the information we have so far. There's precedent for dreams and memories themselves taking physical form too, from the "Bad Memory" and "Last Dream" items in UNDERTALE, which appear in the Memoryhead and Asriel Dreamurr battles respectively.
The Shadow Crystals show us a world without Kris; the Dark Worlds wouldn’t be there if Kris hadn’t opened them, and Susie would still be a miserable, lonely bully if she hadn’t met Kris.
Hm, fascinating, this was very well done, very interesting, it seems about right so far, but well see as things goes on. By the way, do you any ideas for the Eggs?
So I would make 3 save files in each chapter and I will beat the game regularly and then the 2nd will be a little bit more of looking in detail and the 3rd one will be the secret boss
I dont buy shadow crystals making you stronger, the only evedence you put forward is that spamton was much stronger after getting the neo body, which no duh its designed to be a strong body, and that spamtons attacks "look similar" to jevils, and to thag i simply say they dont, they example of them looking similar you put up didn't look remotely similar at all. Jaru did the same thing where he assumed the crystals make you stronger without sufficient evedence, or really anything suggesting it does. In my humble opinion the most likely option is that only strong creatures can get a shadow crystal for one reason or another.
bro change up the answers a bit or the teachers gonna know (also how does Jevil connect to squandered dreams? They're living their dream in the jail cause they think they're the only one truly free)
Even that's still a twisted wish though, since in reality Jevil is even more trapped than everyone else might be, due to them actually being imprisoned in a basement wherein they probably rarely have contact with anyone else.
@@PlayerCarter. True! I guess it depends on whether you look at it from Jevil's point of view or everyone else's. You could say that Jevil is just in denial about his situation or too mad to understand it.
10:53 Why do you say the shadow crystal has negative energy? I mean, I get that light=good and dark=evil is a trope in media, but it seems deltarune is avoiding that trope. Good video, but I don’t think you fully explained your thoughts…
Wait, how do we know the shadow crystal was in the Neo body? is that stated somewhere? Cause it seems like a big assumption based on the idea that Spamton is weaker in the first first when one could just as easily assume he's going easy on Kris because he needs their help. And if Jevil always had a shadow crystal, that doesn't necessarily imply it makes darkners stronger if Seam was able to defeat him when he already had one, that would have to mean Seam was _insanely_ strong at the time, stronger than Jevil WITH a shadow crystal, stronger than Ralsei, Kris and Susie *combined.* Even if he's degraded substantially, he'd have to be stronger than almost any other darkner, including being able to easily beat the Spade King... yet he hasn't. There's a lot of speculation here based on personal bias. I still think the shadow crystals don't make anyone stronger on their own, I think just like with Kris, the crystals showed Jevil and Spamton dark premonitions that drove them insane, but when used properly, like crafted into an item (like the theorised mantles or twisted sword), they have real power. To me, the fact that both went insane implies it was what the shadow crystals revealed that were the cause, and that they recieved them from Gaster. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Where else could they have gotten an invisible shard that shows possible futures and other realities, other than obtain it from a man who was "shattered across time and space."
HEAR ME OUT: Seam is Gaster. We know Gaster was split across the timeline, and Seam says darker yet darker. There are not counter arguements at all because what Gaster lacks in concrete lore, he makes up for in LACK OF CONCRETE LORE!!!!!!

The wingdings at the end of the video say "THREE THEORISTS APPEARED TO BANISH THE ANGEL S HELL"
So that means three theorists will try to debunk Angels Hell?
thank you i hate wingdings lmao

Not too important, not too unimportant
Maybe each chapter a new item will be "retconned" into every chapter, eventually telling a greater story
