Very good Andy, looks like the guys were on price work when they fitted those in, I never use the screws that comes with fittings, they’re too soft. Thanks for sharing and hopefully you’re tucked in bed and not working till all hours editing 👍😄

Cheers Gary! Yup - same here with supplied screws, they're the first thing that go straight in the bin - been bitten too many times... "oh go on, I'll just use the proper screws that came with it... ... boll**ks..." 😆. I know it's a bit nerdy but what's your preferred screw brand? I mainly use Screwfix Turbogold and Quicksilver.

We have a Redrow new build with 400+ snags were still fighting almost 3 years later. I've got two videos up on our banister, at home preview and completion there was a 3+ inch gap at the banister to post, banister wasn't centered, paint job terrible, posts loose top and bottom with missing nowel caps missing from the ceiling in next room, plus the posts that run through under the ceiling had been cut inconsistently.
After multiple attempts at tightening and that failing they then decided to put a block against the wall to stabilise it. We agreed as temporary measure as it should be solid without as per design and our neighbours is find without it so clearly not been installed correctly.
Almost 3 years later Redrow still haven't sorted it and it's wobbly as hell, far more so than yours.
At completion my partner was heavily pregnant so risk of falling down the stairs was high with a very wobbly banister. Our son now 2 and a half and walking up the stairs, even with his weight it's wobbling.
The post top and bottom of the stairs isn't secure.
Curious what you make of the two videos I posted here. The nhbc were here last month and agreed it's not right but we're hesitant to suggest a removal and replacement dispite Redrows multiple failed attempts.

    Hello. Help much appreciated please
Long story short. I need to remove my handrail and ten spindles to allow me to fit my new sofa up and down into the living room doorway. It is the only option I have of getting it to fit into the room
Question. How and where should I saw for the cleanest cut ? Will it be possible to fit back?
    I had a quote of like £600!?? 🤦🏻‍♂️
I just want to temporarily remove it.
Sofa is in my hallway taking up all the space so its quite urgent and I dont have much time between working . Bit of a nightmare.
Any help would be so appreciated please

Thanks for sharing great video as always, I have some table chairs that are starting to become loose at the joints, i'm guessing they are put together by mortise and tenon joinery supported by pins, Any tips on how to fix this issue ? i was thinking about knocking it all apart cleaning up the dried glue and applying construction adhesive rather then PVA for a better bond?

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 лет назад

Cheers for watching! If you can knock it apart, sand old glue off and re-apply decent wood glue like Titebond II or Evo-Stik wood glue that will probably be stronger than construction adhesive. You really need to clamp it while the glue dries if possible. Believe it or now superglue also works very well on wood!

Got nothing to do with being a Friday afternoon job. It's the fact that the contractors have the arse screwed out of them on price, so the quality of work goes downhill, and things like this get left for someone else to sort out as it wont cost the original contractor anything to put right.

ONLY ONE PROBLEM: some git had painted over (and possibly glued) the end cap, so it broke up when I removed it. I've spent about 1.5 hours searching online for a replacement, but can't find one. It's exactly the same type as the one in your video. Do you know where I can buy one?

Often the problem is with Christmas completions - new house buyer wants to be in by Christmas - site manager pulls out all the stops and gets several trades in at once... house goes from first fix to completion in a few weeks. Result - timber not properly dried out when it's handed over. New owner turns on heating... after a few weeks, all timber has shrunk and joints open up. Other problems caused by tight prices, meaning joiner has to cut corners to make a wage, greed by building firm and/or tradesman, and lack of suitably qualified supervision. Most site managers are ex. Brickies - ok in the setting out and early stages, but many are clueless when it comes to knowing what a good finish is, as a rule.
