Reinstalling handrail & spindles pt1 - Newel posts

  • Removing the boxed in Oak handrail & replacing it with a cottage loaf handrail & Georgian spindles, the newels had to be extended taller because they'd been cut short when it got boxed in, i chose not to cut them as low as poss because there would be a lot of leverage & the joint would always show wherever it was, a shorter piece added to the top would be stronger.
    I don't make these videos to make money, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time so if you have gained anything from any of videos & would like to help me out & donate pls click the PayPal link below, every little helps & will be much appreciated. 🙋‍♂️Hi, 👍 You're welcome, yeah the first cut just keeps the saw on track, then you can concentrate on following the line, & yeah chiselling against the grain is hard, always try to work with the wood 😉😁 The Patio door/window thing i suspect is going to be quite a few vids so I'll get back to those when i can concentrate on them, we'll see if you're still happy when i post 15vids 😁 Thanks 👍

    When I cut half lap or bridle joints, I clamp a batten to, in this case the newel post & set the depth on a circular saw and scarf cut away from the batten. It keeps the first cut square & easy to butt up against. Long gone are the days of tendon saws & marking gauges. Lol.

    At the point where you had the newel scarffs clamped in position, I find if you run a hand saw through the dry joint you can take out any discrepancy between both sections. Not a criticism just an observation.. from a fellow carpenter. Good work.

    Wouldn't you have been better and faster using your hand saw for the vertical cut in the bottom newel post? You used a circular saw and then chiseled out. That seemed a laborious route to me.

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  5 лет назад +1

      Cutting this was pretty much in real time apart from where i sped up the vid cutting with the rip saw, if you cut the vertical with a hand saw you'd prob still have to clean it up with a chisel, if you n I had a race, me cutting like this n you cutting along the grain by hand, i bet i would win, have a more accurate depth as the rip saw cuts are set n I wouldn't be sweating n knackered, the way you suggest sounds more laborious, I'd be sat finished drinking Tea watching you pant 😏😉👍
