JVN shares what it means to be gender non-binary and the two discuss the anniversary of the Stonewall riots and what progress for LGBTQ rights looks like 50 years later. They also discuss late night television in 2019 and Letterman shares advice on the art of the interview.

3:35 "Well one of the tenets of mindfulness and meditation is ruthless Judgment of other people, so I would love to take from your teacher. He sounds great!" That's virtuoso-level shade!
that comment knocked me out cold lmfaoooo
Zing!
Muybuena DL came across as such an a***hole. He was schooled. 😂
Yes!!!
Made me love him even more than I already do 🤩
JvN shading Dave's meditation gatekeeping is gold.
More like JvN very skilfully diffusing the shade David dished on JvN 'not doing real meditation because he hadnt had someone come to his house!' lol
@@aliciacroft preach madame!
It's funny that I had an almost identical conversation with an older Uber driver in Toronto- did not like my explanation of CBT meditation and proceeded to tell me about the life-changing book he was reading lmao
Dave was just teasing though.
AMAZING 🥰
I hope people are noticing how incredibly smart and informed JVN is, as well as funny and entertaining.
Exactly!!!
Yeah, its a pity that people get caught up on how he presents himself and how he speaks; there's a deliberate nature to all of it and people just don't seem to get it.
Check out his podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness!
@@cassiemalchak4587 Yeah it really shows his varied interests and conversational skills.
They are clearly the most progressive and intellectual member of QE... but I didn't know about non-binary, something that has been quietly presenting itself as the seasons have gone on. Pure love for JVN.
My husband (straight guy) is a huge JVN fan. Had no idea. Apparently he follows his podcast and everything. I asked him why he liked him so much and he said it’s because JVN seems so genuinely nice and positive.
littlean24 every episode of queer eye that I watched I always said can I get each of the fab five personalities, traits or whatever in pill form so I can take it for the rest of my life? Lol
I'm a straight man and JVN is my god/dess. I love them so much.
My brother is straight and he loves Queer Eye. We binge watch the seasons together and watched the original series, too.
Positive energy is attractive regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc. I can feel the goodness emanating from these fine humans and that is what captivates me.

This is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. It’s like Jesus and Santa are best buds
HAHAHAHAHA OMG This makes total sense 😂😂😂
Hahaha
This comment is severely underrated...
Best social media comment for the day.
Jesus and Santa hanging out during the other 364 days a year.
“I’ll speak heterosexual for you..” OMG JVN I LOVE YOU 😂
Hilarious.
4:18 "LOVE... that"
Hey Netflix, I noticed that you don't have CC's on a lot of your RUclips videos. It would be helpful to people like me, who are hard of hearing and enjoy your content, to have more accessibility. You do a wonderful job with the CC's on your streaming platform, and I'm hoping they will translate to these areas of extra content!
Seconded!!
I do appreciate that comment. I also appreciate the CC on the streaming content. It is superior compared to the other streaming services.
I would appreciate it as well!
Agree 100%
Yes this
David: you’re not trimming anything!
JVN: **trims the hair**
David: no cuticle oil!
JVN: **applies cuticle oil**
David: no mustache wax bars!
JVN: **give him curly handle bars**
David: **LOVES IT ALL**
💕💕💕💕
Total metro lol
I didn't hear him say "no mustache wax bars". Well regardless of if he did or didn't, I don't like them. I don't think it matches him well. If he likes it then fine; it did seem like he was OK with it though.
BIG Aries energy
This is classic 😂
Tsundere lol
“This is a Theresa May of your hair over here, all by herself and no one’s gonna listen to her..” I DAMN LAUGH!
My political junkie ass caught that one, too and I rolled! I love Jonathan.
As a Brit I thought that was really funny. Does the U.S have people who are regarded as national treasures? The U.K does and I would certainly nominate JVN for (inter)national treasure status 😁
I literally cracked up when I heard that.
I loved that comment!!! 🤣🤣
Dave: “I’m gonna ask u to stop saying fingies”
Jonathan: “Want a huggie”?!
🤣🤣
Lmfaooooo 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
I love JVN. He's incredibly smart, fast, and funny. A bit overwhelming for some, perhaps, but damn if he doesn't just fully embrace who he is and run with it. I had the pleasure of meeting him back in his pre Queer Eye days, when he used to work out at my gym, and he's lovely. Happy to see him achieve all this success.
I feel like Johnathan Van Ness is the most beautiful blend of masculinity and femininity
I have to say, JVN is doing an absolutely superb job of representing the LGBTQ community. Carry on doing what you are doing, mate xx
Dave: “Call me when you’ve had a guy come and train you.”
JVN: “Totally, well one of the tenants of mindfulness and meditation is ruthless judgment of other people so I’d love to take from your teacher. He sounds great...”
💀💀💀💀
Freaking LOVE JvN!!!! Ruthless! ❤
Tenets
That was brilliant! Touché!!
Can we just take a sec to applaud these two trying to bridge that generation gap? I love seeing a Boomer sit down with a Millennial and both of them listening/hearing/respecting one another. I want to see more of this. Thank you, jvn!!!! 😍
Dave is 72 he’s straddling the line of being silent generation.
I feel like I can see Dave's brain expanding and growing through this -- much like my brain has over the past years. It is a beautiful opening to allow all beings to be as they feel and to accept everyone's reality as they experience it.
@Daniel Thomas I mean... It is in the name. "Conservative", literally wanting to conserve ye olde ways. No surprises there, that conservatives don't want change.
@James London 🤡🤡🤡🤡
@James Winston you dont Sound that smart and never generalize a whole Group
Yeah, great great... to be honest it would be great to hear this newly enlightened Dave offer a bit of mea culpa for being a creep to women on his show for decades. Watch one of those super cuts and it's jaw-dropping what was seen as harmless banter even just 10 years ago.
"Amelia Earhart could be in this tuft of hair, honestly" 😂🤣 0:03

This is an meeting of two people I didn’t know I needed
"It's okay to not to know all the definitions and not all the answers", wow, smash on, thanks
If Jonathan is a guest on David’s show I’m totally watching it
Edit: Thanks so much for all the likes
Anna Bernick agreed!
Uhmmmmm... that's what this just was.
@@jackal242 I don't think so, it feels more like a segment of the two interacting; talking about LGBTQ+ rights and conducting some gorgeous self care. Something for fans of both or each shows
Who the gay dude with the guy beard?
jackal242 no this was a 9-minute nothing. I wish it was a full episode of Dave’s show, as others do -
“One of the tenets of mindfulness and meditation is ruthless judgement of other people. So I would love to take from your teacher, he sounds great...”
OH THE SHADE! Bravo, Jonathan. Expertly played.
Lol 😝 JVN doesn’t need an old school structured program b/c he’s living it and practicing every day
When I moved to NYC right after college in 2002, the first apartment I lived in was right on Christopher Street, steps away from Stonewall. I was not homophobic but was in the back of my mind, a bit prejudiced. One weekend summer morning while sleeping in bed with a girl I had started dating from my classes, we heard a massive commotion in the street that woke us up. I mean, it was loud. Like a party. We pulled the curtains in the bedroom to see thousands of half naked men on floats and dancing on the street below us. It was the gay pride parade. She got really exited and since she was also a student, from Scotland, and had never experienced anything like it, decided we should get dressed and run downstairs to attend the celebration. She was very serious and I thought it sounded like a nightmare. We spent the next few hours walking around, meeting people and during the evening we had a couple of conversations with celebrating people in a neighborhood bar. Little by little, through her influence and the city's acceptance and tolerance, I completely shed any prejudice I had and fully accepted anyone and everything. Throughout the years I have told this story to friends and coworkers from the LGBTQ community and somewhat feel ashamed of my previous views. My children will never learn that prejudice. They will learn that we are truly all the same.
And you my friend are truly a great testimonial as to what being a great human being is. That's called growth and being open minded enough to look at life and learn from it. Thank you.
And PS...your kids are very blessed to have such a great man to call Dad.
Gay people are just people. Everyone is the same. We all want t the same thing. Just to be accepted and loved.
Beautiful!
Thank you for being an ally!
There really are so many people from the 20s 30s 40s and 50s that fought for gay rights and we will never know most of their names.
In the 1800s there were "friends" who lived together as couples in their communities their entire lives in quasi acceptance. LGBTQA history goes back as long as humanity.
@@stanamilanovich3956 Of course. Thank you. So many people have contributed to where we are today.
After the civil war, there were tons of women living together in what was known as "Boston marriages" which everyone knew most of them were gay, but most people just looked the other way because so many men had been killed in the war, it seemed the most sensible thing for single women to do.
@@stanamilanovich3956 that's how gays in Muslim countries are living right now
"I'm gonna ask you to stop saying fingies"
FINGIES
Fingies Fingies and more Fingies in my best Tami Roman voice.
HAHAHA
That's part was funny
Priti Singer
That’s baby talk. The pronunciation of “ fingies” “Huggies” has been spoken for hundreds of years with humans under the age of five.
It’s cute for kids but not really for adults.
I can't be the only one who thinks David looks better than he's ever looked.
his teeth are esp nice looking, and he has a history with his teeth !\
Looks better but is twice as dumb.
what history?
Nope. Nope. Nope.
Legend..Just the best👋👋
I’m a middle school teacher and sometimes feel so bad that I don’t know all the definitions so hearing JVN say that’s okay made me feel better. I want to understand my students so badly but I get so confused sometimes. Always supportive of whatever they feel/are, but confused nonetheless.
what matters is that you are open and accepting. that's more than so many of us had when we were kids.
Being open to growth and listening is what we ask... and that’s what your doing!
Jonathan Van Ness is a national treasure! ❤️
Yass

It's so healing for me to hear JvN just say he's non-binary. I had a lil cry about it. I love how well-spoken and thoughtful he is and how he marries that with sweetness and unapologetic positivity and enthusiasm. I don't have a lot of non-binary folks to see and love on screen and this really means the world to me

@@amyhenryrulz Yaaas!! It was adorable. lol
Jonathan just giving so much love and care to heteronormativity. Trailblazer.
solfeggietto WELL SAID
@Nick Smith who said it wasn't?
Nick Smith every sexuality and gender identity or expression is “normal” but heteronormativity refers to the fact that our current dominant society upholds the idea that heterosexuality and the M/F gender binary is the “default” or only true “normal”
Nick Smith I don’t have time to address every point in your essay, but the hill I’ll choose to die on is this: sex=biology (male, female, or intersex-most people forget that one) while gender=socially constructed identity marker.
I’m not going to say any more because I know I can’t change your mind on your “facts” but I suggest keeping your mind open because living life in the gray area is a lot more fun that the rigid black and white we’re told to adhere to :)
I love when two completely opposite people end up having great chemistry and become friends it's cute
Yeah ! Nar . They will never be friends after this
fck you
I use to watch Dave on his late show, so I loved seeing this
This is a truly beautiful conversation between generations that don’t normally speak with this content. I applaud them both ❤️❤️❤️
"You look like you're about to sign the Treaty of Fort Sumpter" LMAO
Never watched Queer Eye, but I started watching clips and I'm OBSESSED with Jvn. He's such a ray of sunshine, so sweet and uplifting. We need more people with this type of energy!
Reshme Subramaniam You seriously need to watch QE
We don't deserve JVN, he is too kind and too pure and I love him so much.
I love that JVN is so well educated, and oh so sweet. Most wholesome, gorgeous person I can think of these days. 💙
Agree.
Jonathan is hilarious. I love him. Dave is like an old grumpy man.
He's "like" one? So he's not, but appears to be?
LOVE that Dave interviewed Jonathan Van Ness who is spectacular.
Dave is a troubled individual, but he shows he's working hard to bring honesty and integrity to his own life. He's not loose and flexible - but aware of it and allows himself to go places that aren't comfortable.
best comment on the whole page. instead of all the people gushing on JVN which is kind of boring and shallow.
Chris 👏👏👏👏
Fav comment!
100% accurate
@@Chris-wq3pe Shallow? How when most are saying only good things about his personality? Just because the top comments aren't about David doesnt mean people are somehow shallow
'Giggling comb-fight between Dave and Jonathan'... 😂
My day is *so* much better now. 😊
Dave is a grumpy man. JVN shaded his grumpy, egotistical explanation of his royal meditation😂
He certainly is a curmudgeon
I think it is obvious that Dave was joking.
bigben2414 DL will be gay within 24 months
Dave is cool, he is just old fashion and maybe he was trying to make a funny comment but the other guy took it too personally jejeje, but I can see he is very tolerant, even himself said that he did this show to learn from things he didn't know about before.
Dave likes smart, clever and funny people, that's JVN.💕
JVn you are so switched on,and informed and patiently teaching the old school, a real prophet. Love u 🧡🧡🧡
Life goal is for JVN to ask me if I want a huggy
Love Jonathan and his unwavering optimism even when Dave was being a little standoffish ❤️

Cici Heart SAME
As someone from Indiana, both answers are the same. 🤣
Hahah LOL! xx
OMIGOD FUCKING SAAAAME
wow agist much?
This is such a beautiful study of humanity. Like, they should study this interview in psychology and behavior analysis classes. Such interesting behavior, how shut down David is at the beginning and "above this", how Jonathan shuts down that negativity so flawlessly, but follows with a chance to allow criticism on him. How he takes that critique and you can see him really working on it the rest of the interview. You can see walls come down. This is why Queer Eye works as a show and why he was meant to be doing this work. He made a friend and helped someone grow. Seriously awesome.
This is awesome. Can Dave just do this more? I dont really care about celebrity interviews. They talk about themselves all the time. This is so much more interesting.
“and i’m just gonna ask you to stop saying ‘fingies’” 😂 these two should take this show on the road
When JVN stops being cute & speaks seriously- he is incredibly insightful.
This was the coolest thing ,i have seen in a long time. 👌🏾
I don’t watch JVN expecting to love him more, but I always do. He makes my heart happy!
Lmao ruthless judgement of other people...prime pillar of mindfulness lol
Holy shit he shaved his head. Dave has aged really well seriously, I think he looks better now then as a young guy when he started.
This is the crossover I never would have imagined and am glad that someone’s imagination is way more imagine-y than mine.
I never thought I’d say this....but like, I need a show of just JVN and David Letterman doing stuff. Such a great combo!
Love that he pulled the old 'lick a different finger' trick
You won't let him shave or cut anything!? Why are you even THERE Dave? Come on!
to be funny. and he succeeded
Aaaaah my lil baby heart just curled up in a ball and DIED watching this omg it is so cute and pure and wholesome 😭
Totally didn't expect this collaboration to happen but I am SO glad that it did. The conversation is so important and needs to keep happening beyond Pride Month ❤💛💚💙💜

I expected more from Dave! Leave it to JVN and his relentless positivity and truth of self to push Dave past his “comfort” zone and into JVN’s bubble of warmth and compassion
It's called comedy. There's no humour, if there's no tension :)
The fact that this video exists makes me so happy. The fact that David is so accepting and JVN is so quick witted with Dave’s humor is gold.
this was one of the best interviews i've ever seen. funny, informative, personal, i was captivated. well done, jonathan.

Dave with a professional beard shaping would look amazing. Keep the length, just clean it up.
You heard 'im, a blade gets near it and he leaves. At least he talked him into the beard oil smoother.
Jonathan is funny, flamboyant, and sassy, so I think people assume he isn't intelligent and informed about serious topics.
