The law actually requires that when in Dawlish you have to go to Gay's Creamery for an Ice Cream, with clotted Cream and a flake. As someone who grew up in Dawlish and had to do cross country runs along the sea wall, and has lived in the area pretty much all my life I know this.
As a Teignmouth resident, the amount of times coming back from Exeter in a voyager and getting hit by a wave before the train has to shut down is not healthy for me 😂
Those of us who live in the south west affectionately call the tourists grockels and they are always welcome
I totally agree with the start bit about fast lanes at stations!! Jen should design our railways! 😊❤
It is a very sensible and practical idea. Such layouts do exist in various places, but not often expanding from two tracks just for the station. There is lots of scope for implementing that particular scheme at many stations around the UK.
@@John2Ward Giving the station a slightly larger footprint is worthwhile for the capacity increase in both stopping and passing services
The sea wall section is famous so we are know what to expect but it is still a pleasant shock every time you see it. I remember going to summer holidays in Cornwall. Each year we looked forward to the bit where the train was next to the beach.
done that walk many a time, and yes it is rammed in the summer. GWR drivers tend to wave more than other TOC's
My favourite stretch of railway ever!
Spent two happy holidays, in 2020 & 2021 in a flat overlooking railway and sea at Dawlish Warren. Wanted to go back last year but the price had got silly, so we went to Exmouth instead! And yeah, we had doughnuts from the snackbar at the Bucaneer too!
Dawlish is lovely too, including the only chippy in the South West to sell Hollands pies! Lovely pub with the Marine Tvern too, with it's roof terrace overlooking the railway, so great for watching trains whilst supping Avocet Ale!
Brilliant video Jen, the Dawlish sea wall is beautiful. It's a shame that one of the trains I took along it was a voyager that was running 67 minutes late though lol.
Dawlish sea wall, where health and safety goes out the window!! We have a few four track stations in Kent, agreed a good idea.
Kent is maybe on my list for this year!
@@JenOnTheMove Medway Valley Line is easily the best in Kent, because I know how much you like a railway / river combo.
I used to love looking out the windows on that section of the the line when I used to travel down to Plymouth on a regular basis. I would usually play a certain part Tubular Bells II on my headphones, it just seemed to fit the scenery. To me it is one of the best views on the rail network.
I used to go on holiday in Dawlish as a kid in the 80s. Like you, I'm all for visiting seaside towns out of season, but I went back to visit last October and in three days I didn't even get to do the sea-wall walk! It was just windy and raining sideways the whole time and the waves were coming over too. It would have been just so miserable arriving at Dawlish Warren, wet and with all that closed-up vibe going on. The weather brought most of the rest of the network to a halt, so I think I just chose an unusually bad time to visit. Your video has cheered me up a bit.
Thankfully Class 165s 166s 158s 150s and Castle HSTs Have Removed Pacers 👍
Dawlish is a good spot to stop for a couple of hours. It has some great pubs and you could have watched the black swans swim in the stream in the middle of town. There are some nice pubs there too with great food! Teignmouth has a museum which is quite good. Theres an exhibition of recycled materials made into statues and sculptures along the sea front!
Dawlish is lovely - we stayed in an old cottage that overlooked the railway and sea wall a few years ago!
Also have fond memories of being on a sprinter to Torquay when I was at uni and the waves hitting it as we went along the sea at Dawlish!
A 99 without a Flake?!?!?!? I can’t get my head around it!
Have walked between Dawlish & Dawlish Warren a number of times, it always takes longer than you think because you are sightseeing and train spotting. Love the pub at Dawlish Warren for a nice drink and something to eat!
Dawlish Warren never used to have passing loops with two fast lines, at 2:51 where that footbridge is, looking towards Dawlish Warren Station used to be a halt called Warren Halt which opened in 1905 and was only 2 tracks at the time, think it became the currently layout in 1912 but surprised how the stormy weather has caused chaos on the sea wall, Great video Jen.
Great information!
A 99 without a Flake?!!!
wasnt there a shortage due to Flakes being made in the Czech Republic now or something like that ?
I just Googled the ice cream parlour and it's 25p!
But controversially there is a finger of fudge option.
As a resident to Teignmouth,
1 - Dawlish Warren is Hell in school holidays yet an alright place to cycle or walk any other time
2 - The stretch of railway between Teignmouth and Dawlish is the best stretch in the country
3 - Newton Abbot is a hole.
I went to Dawlish one year on a camping holiday and it was good fun. I went go karting at the park area you visited. Dawlish sea wall is fun to walk along especially to watch the trains go by. Did you see any black swans Jen? I enjoyed watching.
I didn't I'm afraid!
My first trip on the Dawlish line was in the middle of storm, with the sea washing over the train, i think that was one of the last trains to get through for a number of days
Spoke to someone from Network Rail about having 4 tracks going through stations. He said it’s really limited. It’s great until the fast train is a few minutes late. To get round this you need the stopper to sit in a station for a few minutes making it late. He said what was needed is to have 3+ miles of quadruple track ( as there is between Kings Norton and. Longbridge). He was the project chief when they doubled the track around Alvechurch. A passing loop would have been more trouble than it was worth!
The pub in dawlish warren called the boat house is highly recommended!!! The food is soooooo good!
My brother was there when the storm hit. It was awful. Thank you for showing us the state of it now. A beautiful film. 🌊 🍦 🍟 😂
Thanks Jen, that walk brought back memories of doing the same walk way back in the 90's, the sea that day though was much rougher, obviously the best time to do it is November, not in high summer!
I cycled from Dawlish through Dawlish Warren, Starcross, etc last February. It was amazing! Oh, and I went through Dawlish etc twice last week on the dreaded Voyagers... 😖
Ohhh those beach huts I would have stopped for some photos. I did my Inn to Inn walk around Cornwall coast in 2015 after those storms. I remember the rail re-routing. Teignmouth .. Amazing what a touch of pretty paint can do for the spirit of a station
Before anyone complains about the loose stones on the wall after all the work, as has happened on other comment forums, those stones are not on the part of the wall that has just been rebuilt. The new bit has stood up to recent storms perfectly as designed.
By definition a 99 is an ice cream with a flake!
I don’t think the confection monger got the memo.
Great video as usual Jen! Sea walls may not be the prettiest things in the world, and may block the view, but if they stop places getting flooded, and maybe badly damaged, then it is worth it in my opinion
Great video Jen I agree the touristy parts of the country are much better when it's Winter.
That's a lovely off season walk. I might have to visit the area in spring.
06:28 that's my Aunty and Uncles car, they were down for a few days from Leicester as they own a Caravan at Cofton Holiday park. How random is that 🤣
I really would like to go to Dawlish. Dawlish is a great hotspot for train spotters.
Hi Jen, I quite agree with your line of thinking, visiting this lovely area in the winter, when no one else is around. I have to ask though, why do you specifically not like Voyagers? 🤔🙂
Great video, Jen! Always something to explore and see when riding around on different routes!
i really enjoyed this im loving all the lovely stations & im loving the Dawlish sea wall which looks like a good place to film trains by the sea brilliant vlog
Glad you enjoyed!
Should have carried on walking to Teignmouth another great walk along the sea wall, especially where they come out the tunnel
Looking on the bright side, at least CrossCountry didn't pull a TPE 🤣
For some reason despite me spending a long time in Devon/Torbay I've never actually visited Dawlish Warren.
Top donuts in dawlish 👍. The only issue with the passing loop at the station is it often timetables local services to stop there for >10 minutes.
Also agree with you about Starcross being better than dawlish
Very entertaining as always a Jen!
i live in paignton i cant wait to see it
Dawlish Warren was one of the caravan parks we went to for holidays, not my favourite, but it was cheap, (preferred Shaldon). Of course travelled on the Devon General Open Top buses to Teignmouth and onto Torbay each year, and had to play crazy golf. Other days out were to Exeter, Newton Abbot, Dartmoor and Okehampton, doing the Teignmouth-Shaldon Passenger Ferry and I had a couple of family friends in the area.
I like it that area
I quite like the idea of a subseries Jen goes to find the sea!
Great video as always 🙂
Thanks!
It's crazy that (the original) GWR built it directly next to the sea not thinking about the erosion/destruction. At least the view will be magnificent!
That donut was missing a hole and looked like a berliner. Was it with or without jam?
What’s worse Jen? A 150 or a VOYAGER
Trains Station 🚉
In an odd way the railway sea wall has protected the houses in a way cliff erosion being allowed to continue elsewhere has not
Wasn't there some proposal (fantasy?) to build a new line at the back of the town.? Advantages would be faster times between Exeter & Plymouth , no more mega disruptions to service and repairs with probably no small price tag that undermine the railways economic viability. Disadvantage IMHO is the replacement of traditional in town station convenient to where people live and work and often walking distance and for tourists by the inevitable out of town parkway stop for car centric life styles.
Are they reopening an alternate route?
Which is worst? A CrossCounty Class 220 Voyager or a GWR Class 150!
I did a thumbs up and it still said 0!
I think it sometimes takes a while to update
I think the Dawlish will need to be replaced by a new, safer route more inland than the current route.
Question Jen... what train should they replace the Voyager fleet with? .... Also what is the reason behind your pathological hatred of the Voyager trains?
insufficient space basically
They're too short, they're noisy and they're a sign of an operator that is incapable of running a service that is fit for purpose
@@highpath4776 I would not disagree with you on that point
@@JenOnTheMove good points - what would you like to replace them with? The only thing I can think of is the 800s but they feel just as bad as the Voyagers
@@QALibrary HST but with better crash protection for drivers ?
Sorry if this has been covered before, but can I ask, what is the root of you hatred of Voyagers?
If you were battered by salt laden winds three months of the year you would look not in the best of condition
There are some videos up on RUclips of the station getting hammered by waves!
Voyager,,? It might be because most people trsveling are tourist not locals ! It's a equation of comfort versus pleasure, pacers are hard noisy, new modern trains miss these characteristics, so a white sheet !
Nothing wrong with a voyager they better than some
6:12 because ice cream is a legal requirement in God's Country
Why do you hate voyagers?
Why a voyager? Not enough overhead string from a pendalino?
