This is my Artiphon Instrument 1 review. In this video I unbox the Artiphon Instrument 1, connect it, play some sounds with the Artiphon app, Garageband app, and even construct a song! I show you what’s in the box, how to get started, demo all the best sounds, talk about playability, and then see how it works with Garageband on an iPad. The Artiphon Instrument 1 is an MPE MIDI controller in a guitar form factor. It plays guitar, bass, ukulele sounds, as well as violin, piano, rhodes, and even DRUMS! I demo it all! So is it worth $400? You gotta watch the video!

I've had mine for a year now, I think. It is my absolute favorite instrument to play. I have 200+ instruments in my collection, and I'm a violin maker. Instrument 1 with the right software is amazing! Music Studio on the iPad has the BEST sounds I have ever used, and I have over 20 DAW softwares in my my collection. With Music Studio, the solo violin or oboe are just astounding, they sound so real. Other programs really screw these sounds up by immediately doing vibrato right from the start. NO idiot plays a note that way, one starts with a steady note, no vibrato, you wait a moment, then add it in! Well, Music Studio does it this way. It makes me sound like Izak Pearlman on a multi-million dollar Strad! What a fricken wonderful sound. Hey, at Christmas I played Moonlight Sonata on solo violin, with my laptop doing the backtrack. I made the little girls cry! I also have the Orba which I find as a worthless pile of crap, nothing but a toy. I have yet to hear ANYONE do a decent song on the Orba! It does ok on drums. Then we have morons who all they do is a beat, so what, who cares, it takes MORE than just drums to make a song. The orba does make a nice little paperweight, but at $100, an expensive one! Artiphon definitely made a one of a kind controller with Instrument 1, I consider it MORE as a musical instrument than a controller. I bought an extention cable of 15', same length as the audio cable, and can walk around jamming, the short cable that came with it is just NOT long enough for a stage performance, and thats what I use mine for. I also love how I can switch over and play guitar... then for piano and drums, forget it, I have better things to do them on, like my Yamaha keyboard, and my digital drumsets. I am totally NUTS about Instrument 1 and highly recommend it. BTW, on the solo violin setting in Music Studio the range is actually Double Bass, Cello, and Violin, all without changing to individual instruments! Solo Oboe on this program, incredible! I love playing Gabriels Oboe on it!!!
Thank you so much for this perspective. Would love to see videos of your studio,
As a guitarist, this instrument is a beast! So expressive compared to entering MIDI notes on the computer. Love it!
Have you played it or are you just speaking from watching this video?

Lol just what kind of guitarist are you? I cannot believe anyone who held a guitar even once would want to touch this.
@@StopFear a guitarist who works in the weird instrument company & trying to sell that thing 😁
Sweet! Happiness in the mail! I just got my Korg Minilogue in the mail today, so I've also had a great musical day. Thanks for posting this video, Sanjay!
Sweet! I haven't tried the Minilogue. I'm gonna visit Guitar Center today...maybe they'll have it there. Tell me what you think about once you've had it for a while.
I've been eyeing the Instrument 1 for quite awhile and this is one of the videos that sealed the deal for me. As soon as I save up enough, I'm pulling the trigger. Thanks Sanjay!
Your enthusiasm for this product is amazing! Your videos are very informative and helpful! Thanks for demonstrating such an amazing product!
I've had two little dogs, and they were both mesmerized by the simple act of taking something out of a sealed box.
LOL! Unboxing is more fun with animals!!
I hate to piss in everybody's cornflakes, but I must warn you all about something.
About a year and a half ago, I bought an Artiphon Instrument 1. I liked it. But not long ago, I had issues with charging and powering it up. Long story short, the internal battery is dead.
It gets better. Artiphon informed me that they do not offer battery replacement service: they only replace the whole unit IF it's still under the one year warranty. In fact, while examining the thing, it looks like there's no way short of cracking it open to get into the unit to access the battery.
So, unless Artiphon comes up with a solution, I'm stuck with a useless device I can't even sell for parts. Which is even more tragic because I really like the thing.
I'm a huge fan of the instrument one! I can't wait till I save up enough to get it. Thanks for the review. Love all your vids
Thanks! You’ll love it!
I was doing a search for iOS accessories the other day and came across this.
I’ve been completely obsessed with watching videos on the Instrument 1.
This thing looks so bad-ass!
Your joy is infectious.
Guess what! My wife went ahead and gave the instrument to me today! She know that I would have such a hard time waiting for my birthday to get here. I've been playing with it all day long, and it is so amazing! I'm using several DAW's on the iPad. I also downloaded the PC software for it. I found setting up the DAW a pain in the butt like it always is on any of my midi instruments, but finally got a few of them to work. I just wish I had the same luck with my laptop. The software comes up, the instrument is active, however, no sound at all. I got tired of dealing with it and gave up for today. If you know why I'm not getting audio, please let me know. I started watching the tutorials tonight. I'll be viewing all of them. I also found out on the PC that if I bring up the instrument, I can't hear any videos, tell me if you know why. It seems like the PC can only do one audio source. I just hope I dont have to use the iPad all the time. What I want to do is play a backtrack on the pc and melody on the instrument. Anyhow, it is so impressive. The violin sound from the DAW makes me sound like Izak Perlman playing, what a pretty sound. I also need the oboe, bass, steel guitar, and cello sounds, which I have found. The violin one sounds like a super expensive violin, just so amazing. I played Amazing Grace with violin, then Adigo Gm on cello, Gabriels Oboe on oboe, Kenny G on the sax... I am totally blown away, it can play any sound of all the real instruments I have, which is now 119 of them. Gosh, with the capabilities of the instrument, I don't even need all of these real ones anymore! I sure am happy that my wife gave it to me early. Last Christmas she got me the Hohner C64 chromatic harmonica, a melodica, african thumb piano, and the Yamaha Venova. I'm fully retired now, I never have to work again, so I wake up every day and do what I want to do, and not go to work. If we are not playing World of Warcraft I am either making an instrument, or playing one. I generally play about 10 instruments a day. Now I can see myself playing the Artiphon full time. Between all of the DAWs I have, about 10 of them, I now have thousands of instruments available to me. Later on, I will be doing a video of me playing Amazing Grace and Ave Maria to post for my friends to see and hear. When I do, I will post you the link here!
I'm so glad you're having so much fun with the Instrument 1. On your PC, you'll have to choose between either using the Artiphon software alone or your DAW (with its instruments) alone. If you want to use a backing track and play along, you'll need to load that backing track into your DAW (import the audio file into a track), and then load another MIDI track with an instrument on it - like a guitar to control with the Artiphon. When you use your DAW, you set your audio output to your computer speakers (or audio interface if you have one), and then you'll hear the backing track and the midi track on your computer speakers. The Artiphon then only acts as a controller to control the internal sounds within your DAW's midi track. I hope this helps.
@@SanjayC Which DAW are you using. I am using Acid, Ignite, Sonar x3, and Samplitude. I still can get a sound out of Bandlab. I'm wondering if there is ANY DAW out there specifically for the Arti? I think sounds for violin on the Arti app HORRIBLE! Samplitude on the PC is the best one. Then Music Lab does the most actual sound of a violin. I mainly want violin and oboe to work the best. The sounds that come with the Arti are pretty awful. You would think that the company would pick the best sound fonts for their device, it would sell better. For such a great instrument why skimp with a piece of crap software? Its like the Akai Midi Digital Horn, a fine instrument, with the most crappy sounds... Whatever you do, do NOT buy this instrument. The delay between blowing a note and then hearing it is unacceptable. I still use my Yamaha digital horn more, it has its own tone generator box that does a pretty good job. It is also standalone. You simply plug the horn into the box, then the box to an amp, and it is ready to play within seconds, unlike everything else... The Ignite sofware is made specifically for the Max 49 keyboard and does a great job of detecting the keyboard and the DAW being used, There is no BS setting up, it does it for you. So when I plugged the Arti in, ran Ignite, I was ready to play as soon as i picked the instrument... I've been using midi from the time it first came out and STILL find getting a sound out of some DAWs a nightmare...
Great review, this sold me on wanting an Artiphon more than any other video
One of my favorite videos that you've created. Loved to listen to you sing. You should sing more!
ruclips.net/video/IVuBUoWNlqg/видео.html
Had fun with it for a while, even wrote an entire string section using it. However the trigger pads simply stopped working after a year. I’d understand if I dropped it or left it in the rain, but it just stopped working. There doesn’t seem to be any place (in Canada at least) to get it repaired so buyer beware.
its funny that you only have 130k subs, yet your production quality is so good.
keep it up!!
Love you and your personality! Look foreword to your videos every week! Can't wait to start making videos once I get my songmaker kit
Songmaker kit! Nice! Thanks for the awesome compliment!
I don't know what's more impressive - the instrument or your video!!
😃 thanks!!
This would be so exciting to win! Thanks for your reviews and your channel (and livestreams!)
Str8 up I'm here to with the Antiphon. Definitely an inspiring instrument.
You're hilarious, dude! This was so entertaining, and what a cool new toy! Midi for guitarists. Love it.
Animals are the real comedians!
can't wait to use it with my looper!!
Yo, my wife ordered one for my upcoming birthday in December! I can't wait to get my hands on it. I've watched just about every available video of it here on youtube. I'm so amazed by what I've seen. ALthough I have the real instrument of every instrument, they are a pain in the butt at times. I wanted a single instrument that does it all, and one that you hold like the real thing. I have two digital horns, they are great, but not what I really want. I also like the idea that I can hook to a cellphone, iPad, and computer. Several years ago, I bought, I guess about 10 different DAWS, and downloaded hundreds of virtual instruments. With all this software and this device, there is NO limit of what can be done. I already know when I get it in my hot little hands I wont even want to go out to eat for my birthday, I'll be wanting to take it with me! I have 118 instruments in my collection. I'm also a violin, guitar, harp, and steel guitar maker. Music is everything to me in life! When I get to the point that I can no longer play, I dont want to be alive! I appreciate you showing all of us the video. I know that you were about to spew from excitement, as I will be doing in December!
Haha! I love your excitement! I hope you enjoy it!
Just ordered my boyfriends for his upcoming birthday (Christmas) 😊 he told me about 1.5 ago he wanted one when we first met now I’m gonna make it happen as a surprise 😭 I think I’m more excited than him lol
How do I get a gf that gives me an artiphon pls help
@@kyra7891 Hahahaha! Now thats a funny reply back. Hell if I know, maybe shower her with gifts, flowers, and be nice to her!!!
@@kyra7891 Also, if you get the Instrument 1 you may lose all interest in the GF and would rather be jamming. I've been married 43+ years and my wife likes to get me stuff so I will be busy and NOT pestering her! My computer room is sound proof and I can jam full blast even in the middle of the night! Instrument 1 is the most AMAZING instrument I have in my collection of 200+ instruments, and I'm also an instrument maker, I make violins, concert harps, lap steel guitars, and also do all repair work in my area. Instrument 1 is so versatile that it can actually replace all instruments. Then when you couple it up with MIDI software the number of sounds are infinite. Do EVERYTHING, even SUCK UP, bed, or plead with her to get you one! Even lie, cheat, or steal to get one!!!
Awesome video Sanjay! I’m psyched to see you have an Instrument 1. I’ve liked your videos with the seaboard block, they helped convince me to get one for the holidays. Looking forward to seeing any more vids with the I1!
Thanks! Yeah, the Instrument 1 surprised me, quite honestly. I’ve got so many ideas for it now!
Hey I like your channel btw!
Great video. I just bought an Instrument 1 based on your review. However, I have 2 questions: (1) how do you get the U.S. adapter into the power supply? I have pushed down on that little button, sliding in the curved first, and none of the adapters will slide all the way in. (2) Is your dog a full Yorkie or a Yorkie mix? So Cute. ))) Thanks
Crazy, set up, WOW! I NEED to try this!!
If you can play the guitar even a little, this is really awesome! Feels just right.
Sanjay C you made it look so easy bro, love the videos!
Love KITTIE in the box!!
Thanks. Hope it makes me a better player.
I want one now so bad! Nice video!
I would love to get one of these. I play the guitar better than the keyboard so it's so much easier to punch in MIDI with a more familiar instrument!
I love that thing, it looks like it can play vsts really well.
Being a multi-instrumentalist this is awesome
Will it work for left handed guitar players? Or do i have to reverse strum like on a normal right handed guitar? It looks like a great tool to have learning how to make music on Garage Band :)
Just found out about these, def my next purchase
I'd love to experiment with the Artiphon--thanks for the review.
ruclips.net/video/IVuBUoWNlqg/видео.html
Thank you for this review! This is one of the most interesting controllers that I've seen.
dope unboxing, subscribed
I think this would be great for a longtime guitarist.
Nice song at the end, man. I used to use a midi guitar in the studio in place of a keyboard. It was a pain in the ass to set up and use though. This thing looks way easier to operate. I must get one.
Thank you! Yes, it’s pretty easy to use as a midi controller.
@@SanjayC oil thanks man. I saw an ad for this thing on Facebook last night, and while I was like "ooOOoOoo", everyone else in the comments was crapping all over it. I ended up doing a ton of research on it and it'd definitely be a great replacement for that monstrosity of a MIDI guitar I used to use. My band is metal fused with a bit of techno, so this thing will be awesome for me in the studio! I subbed, btw.
Yeah you’ll find negative comments on this too. I mean if you’re expecting it to be exactly like a guitar then you’ll be disappointed. Manage your expectations and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. 😉
@@SanjayC for sure. For me, I hold a Midi guitar as though it's a guitar, and play the fretboard with my left hand. I don't even use the "strings". I'm able to FLY through scales using that method. You definitely can't do that on an actual guitar. I checked out some of your other videos. Your stuff is solid man. Keep it up!
Very informative! Keep up the great content
OMG, love the song you are so handsome and such a good voice! You are the whole package! Can't wait for the next one!
Great video - thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Karen!
it will be very interesting if you compare this to your seaboard block!
thats a good idea!
i'm a guitar player so this i think would be better, the ability to change tunings can be done using kontakt? artiphon sounds kinda bad with a tablet but with the same vst as the seaboard, what would you choose? in every video i saw the artiphon sounds like a begginer instrument and the seaboard sounds amazing... your videos included! and i dont know why :)
I own both and the instrument 1 is going back, and the Seaboard is here to stay. They each have their quirks, but I can actually play and record music on the block, and it doesn't slow down my work flow.
true..make the music that you LOVE.
Just added one to my Amazon Wishlist. How well does it integrate with other iOS apps?
I've only tried it with the Artiphon app and Garageband. I also tried it with Ableton on my Mac...wow! So impressed. The guitar sounds in Ableton were unusable before! :-)
Dang, this thing is sooo cool! Currently I’m playing just keyboard midi instruments and I always wanted to learn how to play a guitar. Do you think I could learn on it? Btw. Awesome video man! :))
Thanks! This is a very forgiving guitar midi controller. I like it because I can fix my mistakes in my DAW! :-)
Such a cool instrument. Pretty much the seaboard for guitar players. I'd love to win it!!
Sanjay, you switched from this black Artiphon to a white one in your recent video. Was something wrong with the first one?
Actually, I have both - but I'll be giving away the white one on my channel soon (shhh :-). The white one looks cooler on camera so I used it for the other video.
Hi Sanjay, I was searching for MPE controllers and came across this old video from you. Could you test this with Ableton 11 and see if this works there?
🎉🎉YOU JUST HIT 100K !!!!🎉🎉
cool and informative video! it’s really interesting to see how one controller can accomodate to so many different playing styles!
Very cool. Are you still playing it 1 year later? 😏
Sweet! That would be great to have!
I would absolutely love one of those, thanks for the giveaway!
I liked the 'cat in the box'. Can you make another video or two? I would like to hear how well rock and roll plays on it. I just received my Instrument 1. It is now charging.
For sure, I'll make more videos with it. Good luck with yours!
Dreaming of the day one of these end up at my door lol. Epic unboxing haha
As a guitarist, the dealbreaker for me is the way the right hand string sensors are aligned in a thin strip, perpendicular to the strings. This doesn’t allow for efficient right hand technique. It’s an inferior design.
I would love to try the Artiphon!
well, it could work for me. I'm not a guitar player but always wanted to try.
I haven't played my guitars in ages and I've lost my callouses. I suppose one of those would be easy on the fingertips. :)
Yes much easier, but still get ready for a little pain!!
This is completely new to me. As a pianist this looks interesting. May try it at one point.
If you're not an experienced guitarist, I think its a good option.
What a trip! Thanks.
Love the Rayland Baxter in the beginning with Yellow Eyes!
...and at the end!
@@SanjayC yeah. sorry man just remembering this product and looking around about buying it! :)
Cool!
Thanks!
Kind of a toy... But going deeper into the versatility, it's just an awesome composing tool... Like it!! And it's easy to play, even a dog can do it...
Very cool! I hope I win it!
Artiphon just announced the Orba, so I'm hoping you demo that too
Yes I hope to get a unit to try out.
Not sure if I should buy one, but I did.
Was it a good decision?
I don't really agree that, as you say this is a "pick up and play instantly instrument" as you can not take it out of the box and start playing. It is a controller and requires a computer (iPhone) connection in order to have any sound at all. I have an Instrument 1 on order and will be receiving it today or tomorrow. Uncharacteristically, I have only Windows 10 machines and Android Phones which will be no help at all. I am willing to purchase a used iPhone for $20 in order to have the ability to take this out to the park on a Sunday and chill with it. I will keep the spare phone in the carrying case. Also, should this actually work for me I hope to make some videos about how awesome it is for Cakewalk by Bandlab (free DAW on Windows) users. Maybe I can be the Windows guy as the creators of this instrument are quite fond of saying "I don't use Windows". We shall see.
Ahhhhh this so awesome!!!
How is the response? Is there any latency?
No latency. Pretty good.
Sanjay C how about to make sheet music ?
Super cool!
interesting but i am big in to bending strings..can you add distortion to the violin?
It's possible connect instrument 1 to old midi keyboard?
Wickedly cool !!
Yeah, music tech these days is mind blowing!
nice - I want to try one
Ive never learned to play guitar. Would be cool to learn how to play on this, one can only dream.
The great thing about this is that its very forgiving. I often fix my mistakes in my DAW after recording with the Instrument 1.
Or you can save and buy this its 300$
I like your dog - but the Aritphon is even better
I need to review my dog...you may change your mind! lol!
Does Bluetooth have low enough latency for an instrument? I’m thinking they’d have to do some proprietary alternative with a USB dongle.
I'll take one!
Wait, what?! Did I just see correctly that you were playing normal guitar chords?? Does that mean the keyboard and other instruments are set up in those instrument's tuning and such?? Do tell. Super curious. This looks like the auxiliary instrument of my dreams. Perhaps a super affordable way for me to lay down the other instuments on the album I've been planning.
So if you're purely a guitarist, this is a great instrument to use as a MIDI controller. So yeah, you can play other instruments like a guitar. BUT, you can also switch to keyboard and drum pad layouts. Lots of options.
I also play keys and am fairly versatile with stringed instruments. So wait - I can play cello with a guitar setup?! Ok, that's epic.
Looks like easy to learn how to play guitar fingers don’t hurt, that’s what freaks me out about the guitar I have
The finger pain is less for sure. But maybe you should look at new strings for your guitar! :-)
Can you get your hands on their newest instrument called ORBA? I trust your reviews.
Does it have to be plugged in to play or does it have speakers a d internal battery?
It has speakers and a battery. But you need to connect it to a computer, phone or iPad to generate sounds.
yo this is crazy!!!
Yup! :-)
yes for bluetooth
can I used with a synth hardware or only phone ?
Would you say it's easier or harder to finger the chords than a guitar?
Sorry for spamming, love the song at the end. That's it, no more super message threads from me.
Its almost exactly the same - feels like light strings. And all strings are the same, unlike a real guitar.
Dude, keep commenting! I love it! Nothing makes me more happy that getting feedback! :-)
How do you feel about it as compared to the Seaboard Block Keyboard? Which do you find more useful??
I get this question a lot. They are both very different. Before I had the Artiphon Instrument 1, I always felt like I couldn't mimic the accurate sound of a strumming guitar or picking guitar. This solved that problem for me. I also advise people that, if you're going to pick one of the two, I would pick according to your primary instrument. If you're a guitarist, go for the Instrument 1, if you're a keyboardist, go for the Seaboard Block. If you're both...well then...time to save up!
Ok, but can you play Lead break neo- classical melodic solo’s on it etc ?? 😨
haha...will have to try that next!
Is it better than the jammy e though?
I think mine is going back. I just got it today, both speakers buzz like they are blown out, at any volume, the fret board doesn't respond to finger vibrato or pressure, and it's difficult to mute. I've played guitar 20 years and maybe a few seconds of playing out of every minute doesn't sound too bad, but the rest is notes triggering staccato, the sudden muting of strings that should be ringing, and strings that should be muting getting stuck on. Instead of enjoying it, it just made me want to put it down and go pick up one of my guitars.
That's good feedback for the Artiphon peeps. If you're an experienced guitarist, this is gonna feel really different. For a beginner like me, its fine.
I think you’re missing the point I don’t think it’s supposed to be a replacement for a guitar? I am interested in it purely as a midi controller, Along with the jamstick. They have both been marketed wrongly and people think that they are guitars when they are nothing like guitars!!!
if you had to choose would you purchase this for keeps or the seaboard soundmaker kit?
Tough question - they are really different approaches. Since I am primarily a keyboardist, I would choose the seaboard alone and add the full version of Equator software.
I'm happier with seaboard block. What's your idea? Which one you prefer?
Honestly...I'm a keyboardist, but I still prefer the Lightpad. Its just such an innovative device. I can configure it, change layouts, and the light feedback is so cool. Also, I tend to grab that first when I walk out the door - its such a convenient small controller. I can go on and on....How about you?
I'm more melodic player rather than bits. From my point, it's a little hard to connect with the shape of notes on lightpad, though It's a great device both as fun and productivity.
But as I didn't touched yet the physical version of lightpad, I can't be sure which one is my favorite :D
That’s cool. But when you’re ready, and have some money to spare. Grab a Lightpad.
Sure I will
This looks like a lot of fun to use. Would pair nicely in with other equipment. I just need more hands...
How do you bend a note on the artiphone?
very interesting, remind me of Misa Kitara and TriBass
but the only plug is USB? this is a shame for performing, they should include at least MIDI out
not there yet, but has potential to be a great companion to the Seaboard in a band :)
You can connect it to your computer using USB and then control other stuff - but not directly like you would with a MIDI out.
Damn Now I want one
Can you use it with shreddage?
You are right about Bluetooth - "Instrument 2"?
Actually I've been considering to buy either a seaboard block or an Artiphon instrument 1. Could u give some suggestions?
They are both so different. If you are a guitarist get the Artiphon. If you're a keyboardist get the Seaboard. If you are both....well then you better start saving some cash! :-D
Guys come on. He is obviously sponsored to show you this musical toy and to give it a positive review. I mean seriously. He is not even acting that well to pretend how impressed he is.
Reminds me of many of the fake reviews for that dress watch scam from Felipe Loreti. They paid hundreds of people to advertise their substandard quality watches and many reviews are just like what this guy is doing. To me he simply looks like he is acting and pretending to love it.
Any person who has tried guitar once will wonder why anyone would buy this? For kids who don’t want to seriously learn guitar this may be a cool toy.
after seeing your video, i'd like to buy one for stopping my about 20 yeas real guitar playing aha...
