- EPISODE #147
I head out for a solo adventure, I've for a 70km route planned going out to a town I haven't been to yet, called Santa Cruz. I take it easy (well as easy as you can on these hilly roads) taking in the beautiful surroundings of my new home of Portugal. This place really is a cycling hidden gem. Stunning views everywhere and I even stop for a cheeky ham and cheese toasty at the beach. I'm in heaven.

Said it before, will say it again - best cycling channel on RUclips right now. Nothing else makes me want to get out and ride. Chapeau and keep it coming, Tommy! 😬
Thank you! Really appreciate it…
Hi limit on front derailleur needs to turned in (clockwise 1/8 turn) ever so slightly to avoid dropping…
Yep that’s what I’ve done… and it seems to be all good now! 👍
Great to be back watching cycling tattooists❤
🥰🙏
Crazy how much Portugal looks like western Australia
Time to wax your chain 😅
Trusty chain lube for me!
You can use liquid wax like chain lube ;) no more dirty fingers 😁
Waxed my chain and contaminated my disc brakes during the degreasing process! 😢
first thought I had - one you wax you won’t go bax
@@TheCyclingTattooistyou should give it a try. Its super easy to do and makes every day feel like new chain day 🫶
Despite you chain issues this was a really fun one to watch, cheers for the laughs.
Thank you! 😁🙏
Baby wipes are always good to carry. Cool video
There’s no way I’d ever be prepared enough to take things like that… I barely remember the bike. 🤣
Get ready because Helder is in great shape, as always your videos are a spectacle👌
Yes I know… he already punished me the other week! 🤣🤘
Love that you talk to your bike, I do that all the time when she plays up. I also pat her when we've been cruzing 😆😎
Just you and your baby out on those solo rides… 🤪🤘
Quality video mate!! 🚴🏼
On top of the wax suggestions , a pair of latex gloves in the saddle bag and/or some baby wipes for these situations
I try and always have those in my cycling wallet thing...whatever you call the rapha zip up phone case thing.
Yep I really should be more prepared… it’s just not in my nature! 🤣
Thanks again for the ride, Thomas!
Looking forward to the next one✌️
Santa Cruz where I used to leave. Love your channel
Thank you! 😁🙏
For those of us who live in hot climates…nothing better than a hot hard ride in the sun…
Can’t beat a ride in the sunshine! 🙌
The intro still 🔥
Big up Nathan T the cycling Dad
thanks Thomas...i enjoyed this episode...the views are spectacular
Food in Portugal is always top notch!
I never knew before I came here… food is incredible! 😁🙌
@@TheCyclingTattooist My Mrs is Portuguese so I'm well qualified in it 😂😂
Pica pau is a favourite of mine… 🤤
@@TheCyclingTattooist try Carne de porco à alentejana - very tasty. :)
Looking forward to the big ride 😊
Me too! 😁😁😁
Roads look lovely and quiet. Great vid as usual!
Yep… it makes it a hidden gem for cycling!
Portugal is pretty beautiful!!
Oh it’s amazing! 😍
Last week… bikes running great. Shiftings awesome 😂😂
Spoke to soon clearly! 🤣🤣🤣
Love the jersey…
Need to get those gears sorted…
Love peace and chain grease …
🙌🙌🙌
I look around the roadside for a stick/twig to use as a tool to hook the chain back onto the sprocket to avoid lubing up my fingers.
I would usually do this… but as I said the chain was wedged between the crank arm and chain ring… there would be no stick strong enough! I hand to pull as hard as I could to get it out… 🙈
Looks amazing over there
It’s unreal!
Great video mate 👌
🙏🙏🙏
Glad you made the disclaimer (an Englishman in 25 degrees) that's perfect haha .. big love from Radelaide Australia
Oh yeah it was perfect… and soon I’ll be used to it and not sweating to death. 🤣
Thanks for the early Sunday morning video. We seem to be ok with the heat acclimatisation. When we pop back to the UK it's the cold acclimatisation we suffer with. 😂
🙌🙌🙌
Super. Your videos always lift me thanks. That chain thing is a bloody nuisance. Went 1x years ago because of it, but I understand things are generally better now. Might try Classified at some point....
Yes those classified hubs really intrigue me…
what a beautiful ride. jealous! (also that sandwich did look delicious!) EDIT: good tips on the suncreen for tattoos and not, and in sun and not. Easy thing to do to keep safe!
Yeah I’m not making it up… they really are the best toasted sandwiches I’ve eaten. 🤪
@@TheCyclingTattooist lol i did say "wow that looks good" when it first appeared. Tosta mista, bocadillo, grilled cheese - we've all got our regional bread+cheese combos so eat on!
Since we have some fashionistas commenting all in good fun of course, noticed your helmet has notches that almost perfectly match the glasses, pretty cool.
Yes my thoughts exactly… it’s like they are meant to be together! 🤪🤘
I always keep a pair of tattoo gloves in my tool kit to keep the hands clean.. Cheers from Istanbul. 🤙🏼
Not a bad idea… but I’m not that organised! 🤣
Note, A) Use chain quick link for easy opening open chain B) Adjust front derailleur with outboard limit screw C) Use wax lube so your drivetrain and hand will be always clean : )
A) there’s literally no reason for me to touch the quick link in this situation.
B) yes I have since done this.
C) wax isn’t for me.
A) I just ride
B) 4yrs never had bike serviced
C) I just ride
@@TheCyclingTattooist in your new, drier, more consistent climate, a fully waxed chain might be easier than in the mucky dirty (and wet) UK. might be worth trying again if you're inclined. I've been waxing mine for a year now and love it - a faff at times, but worth it. also i had to laugh at the grease on your fingers on your full blacked out sleeve, don't worry nobody would know! lol
Damn Portugal does look nice
It’s the nuts!
The old dry calendar and spit in the hand. Who told you my finishing move?!
Also as always big up T Bain the Watt machine of west Cheshire
Don’t ask me where I learnt that one! 🤣
I am not a roadie but love your content anyway. But i cant lie you have made me look into the sport 🧐 Big ups from Denmark 🇩🇰 ❤❤
That’s amazing… and thank you! 😁🙏
Haven’t been back since 2019 but can’t wait to there in July (Mrs is from there)
Tosta Mista and a galao with my name on it just waiting!
🙌🙌🙌
I have the same problem with etap rival. If I just tap both levers it works fine but if I hold both levers off comes that chain it's a pain in the arse lol!!!.
Very strange! Bloody annoying..,
Great videos.
I use REX hot wax on my chains nowadays and never any dirty hands 😀
I haven’t got time to be giving my chain a bath… 🤣
An old calendar, that made me laugh
🤣🙈
Nice to see you back out bike. Always technical issues 😮 maybe new chain required and or front mech adjusted!! Looking to cycle Portugal next year. Recommend any cheap accommodation? Great video 👍 Maybe go for waxed chain,
I know… I’m cursed! It’s a brand new chain and I’ve adjusted the mech now and seems good!
And no I can’t really recommend anywhere… but I guess with a bit of searching you’ll soon find something. Loads of airbnbs too!
Nice revamp of the intro. Still the best intro!
Revamp..? Haven’t touched it… 🤣 unless you’re referring to the original original one from like over 2 years ago?
Ah. Must be the headphones or the Port de Pollensa weather that is distorting the sound lol
David loves a hill or 2 ⛰️⛰️😂
He sure does…
Try sram rival axs, x2 chain off outward all the time, 3 bike shops and still slips
Hey, what kind of stem do you run? Thx!
Amazing vid dude loved it!!! Also, damn you, gonna resubscribe to Fulgaz and get me on some of those Portuguese routes!!!🙌
What size bike do you ride and what brand
Hi from Canada 🇨🇦 always cool your vlogs 😂 what kind of wheels ?
🙏🙏🙏
Cycling volume / general life stuff juggling torment……total sympathy
It’s a juggling act alright…
I was trying to look in here for reasons why the chain is popping off? Is it stretched too much? I had a chain once that I finally realized I had one link that was bent/pinched in and it was the problem.
No it’s a brand new chain… the front derailleur just needed a slight adjustment. 👍
There is the wax option, actually better for your drive train
I just can’t be assed messing around with wax…
@@TheCyclingTattooist there are packages now offered by eg Silca that make it easy. One eg is there no need any longer to separately degrease the chain. You also have the option of using the liquid wax (for top ups)Would suggest you also have more than one chain
We all have days like this.
Well my chain has never dropped off like his. Atleast not while riding...
Yep happens to the best of us…
@@TheCyclingTattooist you wouldn’t think so according to some on here.
Great vid Thomas. Love that Jersey mate. Where is that from
MAAP… always! 🤪🤘
I should be your mechanic. Problem solved in 2 minutes. Keep pushing. 💫
Yeah it was an easy fix…
I missed some episodes as it seems, where the emonda?
Time to go back and watch the last two episodes… 😁👍
always carry some latex glove in your spares pack, or use a leaf to pull the chain back on.
There was no leaf that was going to protect me from that… the chain was fully wedged inbetween the crank and sprocket… had to pull as hard as I could! Hence the hand… 🤣
Have you ever been surfing Thomas? Everytime i see these beaches and waves right in front of your door i think you have to get into that..
It’s something I may do at some point… but just don’t have time to do all the things I do as it is, let alone adding another hobby. Plus I hate the sea… 🤣
@@TheCyclingTattooist 😅
Silca have degreasing wipes in individual packets, would have been perfect for that situation.
Start using Bike 7 Pro wax no more dirty hand extremely quiet chain recommend.
Just can’t be bothered to mess around with that wax stuff…
@@TheCyclingTattooist It's one of those bike things you try and after you saying how I lived without it. But we are free.
I have noticed you are using a wahoo now, what made you change to wahoo from your garmin?
Because Garmin suck… 🤣
I always carry a latex glove just in case for that exact reason 😂😂😂
Yeah that is a good idea! I’m not that kinda prepared person… 🤣🙈
So Tom, have you got a discount code for the helmet? 😂 I see it’s just come on the MAAP uk site, enjoying the vlogs mate, cheers
Not yet… but in the near future I will have. So keep your eyes out! 😁🙌
@@TheCyclingTattooist cheers Tom 😀
dream roads, looks amazing
It really is unbelievable 🙌
My guess is worn chain. Great vid Thomas, as always 👍
Ps. Im using Silcas synthetic lube. It's not cheap but better than any oil based lube I've ever used. Seems to last about 200k between applications in the real world, not the 600k stated, I think.
Someone else mentioned a bent teeth, think that sounds more likely than the chain being worn. But I'm no specialist :)
Chain is brand new…
@@TheCyclingTattooist oh! Ignore that then! Hope you get it sorted🤞. Would be interested to know what it is... 👍
Hello buddy! What camera are you using? Planning to create some videos too.
Go pro 12 mostly…
Put a couple pairs of your black latex tattoo glove in your back pocket. Saves your hands 👍
I'm guessing one of the teeth on the chainring is bent. Easy fix once you get home.
Also wax that chain. Call Silca 😅
Hmmm maybe, I’m getting it in with the bike doctor, they’ll figure it out! 🤞
@@TheCyclingTattooist the same thing happened to me awhile back, the chain would only come off when I was on the 10th cog in the back. The tooth on the front chainring was only slightly bent so I was able to bend it back with an adjustable wrench. I can't remember if it was bent outwards or inwards.
Hey Tom great video how to you plan for long rides ? Ie enough water/ electrolytes/gels and snacks when you do long ride I find I seem to run out half way round ?
❤
Stop and a shop and reload… or better still stop at cafe and properly load up!
@@TheCyclingTattooist thank you love all your videos keep them coming 🤘🚲👍
Next time you do a ride over this way it would be nice to join you live in the Bedfordshire area back in England
Anybody already mentioned wax? 😅
🤣🤣🤣🙈
Best hack for oily hands is orange peel.
Noted 👍
Pls make a video garmin vs wahoo. Im on the edge of switching yesterday garmin did not record my rides elevation -.- (4h ride no stats)
F*** Garmin! 🤣
@@TheCyclingTattooist exactly! Had both and will never ever go back to garmin again!
Yep they suck…
@@PascallionStallion yeah im srsly pissed at my garmin right now. Im one click away from buying a wahoo. Would you guys go for roam or bolt? Currently im on the 1040
Mate,where's the Trek Emonda?
Watch the last two episodes… 🤪👍
You got oil all over your arm too. 😜
🤣🤣🤣🙈
Awesome vid, fantastic scenery but holy crap it's crazy to watch the skies being sprayed live as you ride, they absolutely coated that part of Portugal. Talk about a crazy world we live in.
He we go…
@@TheCyclingTattooist Let me guess - they're "contrails" haha
I literally couldn’t care less! Life is hard enough as it is sometimes… without worrying about conspiracy theories as well, I’ll let people like you worry about that… 🤣👍
Wax on…..;)
I just can’t… 🤣🙈
why did ur chain keep popping off. ?
Derailleur needed a slight adjustment…
I would recommend to switch to waxing your chain. No more dirty fingers 😉
Mate I bought my Orro bike 4 years ago and I haven’t had it serviced. Never had a puncture, wheels have never been off. All I’ve had is a new rear brake cable after a hilly sportive with severe braking on tight hairpin descents stretch it. Cyclists can be so anal with bike set ups, oils, lubes, gadgets. My gears change slick no issues. I do basic cleaning and oiling, J U S T - R I D E
I mean I understand your sentiment… I’m all for not being too precious with these bikes… but if you’ve owned a bike for 4 years and not had it serviced, then that’s criminal! 🤣🙈
@@TheCyclingTattooist 😂😂 I know, but it goes like a dream. When we were kids who got a bike service? Nobody knew what bearings looked like. All I’m saying is you don’t have to “use this” or “do that” to be able to cycle.
Because let’s face it, sometimes sh!t happens, and life’s survival.
Tally ho old boy! 🫡😁
“Goes like a dream” is relative… if you had the exact same bike brand new right now, you’d 100% feel the difference… but like you say, it certainly doesn’t stop you from cycling! Ride on… 🤪🤘
u gotta wax bro
Nahhhh I don’t have time to be doing that… trusty chain lube for me! 🤣👍
Iso wipes in saddle bag always. Trash bin seems to be a returning character on this channel. Keep it FAAST
I almost put a throw back clip of the bin in actually… I like your thinking 🤣
Wax your chain fella
I’d rather save myself the agro… and once in a blue moon when my chain comes off. I’ll just get a greasy hand! 🤣
Dont know if its just me but the new maap kits lost their appeal to me. I really liked their previous colors and combinations but this years offering is not doing it for me. Anyone else?
Nope just you mate… 🤣 I love the new stuff! Especially the new LifePlus collab kit, I’m yet to wear it. But looks unreal 🔥
Oh Lord can’t help to notice all the chemtrails in your sky! 😢
🙄
Great main sound 🎶🎶 thanks for This moments . Will you ever come back to Tenerife ? 🫵🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes I’ll definitely come back one day! Great place to ride… 😁🙌
@@TheCyclingTattooist I hope to see you soon here, greetings🫵🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
