Vocal Point's Ode to Overdone Acappella

- Vocal Point arranged this funny conglomeration of every acappella song we've heard overdone time and time again at their last concert (March 08). I can't remember what it was called. Enjoy.
**Just to clarify concerns expressed in the comments. They arranged these songs in various keys and tonalities--mainly minor basically to make fun of how overdone they are in acappella...almost as if this was their funeral. It was meant to be humorous. Видеоклипы
Ok, this had to have been difficult to arrange and keep in minor tune. I gotta give props to these guys. I've never had a chance to see them live (despite living in Pleasant Grove), but this just sounds hilarious. What a fantastic concept. Thanks for posting this.
I love this. And its super true. Many a cappella songs are over done and its so great that they can have fun with it and make fun of this, still sounding good. They are the most talented group I've seen perform.
This is absolutely FANTASTIC and that BASS is AMAZING!!!!!
@awabob yeah, when you know a song in the major scale and then transpose it to a minor scale progression, it messes with your head a bit. lol. But they did amazing and actually made it sound cool.
love this. creative! i love the "kiss the girl" in minor! great :) and classic ending!
This is hysterical! I've been a VP fan since they we're on Sing Off, and this song really shows off their goofiness and personality. Well done!
THIS IS GREAT! really overdone accapella. you are so right. I love the purposful minor tunes! =]
So freaking amazing!
Ya think it's easy to sing so consistently off-key? This kind of parody is an art form if done right, and they've pulled it off like true pros. Bravo performance!
It is obvious they are doing this on purpose!! hello overdone acapella songs with a twist, almost all the songs are done changing the mayor tones for the minor ones, that is way hard to sing, when u are used to hear/sing them in mayor tones. I think they are way awesome! I more than just enjoy them, I think they're the best acapella group ever ;) Your #1 fan in Puerto Rico

thank you! I had a great laugh :)
Very funny (and difficult to do)!
They´re AMAZING!
Clever and awesome!
Holy freaking cow! "I am agog, I am aghast . . ." I am AMUSED!!!! Well done, BYU boys!
Brilliant!!!!!!
turning stand by me into a tango was fucking genius
To the girl laughing loudly into the mic: next time, please don't.
This is hysterical!! I've been a VP v
@KnottPatriot it was at a performance, not a concert. They are aloud to.
ok, this is really funny haha
@514oeht I'm very aware of what VP's abilities are, or at least used to be in 2005. I have the CD, even though there is a lot of studio processing in it. You don't need to be patronizing because I get what the joke is supposed to be. I have enough degrees in music and vocal experience to know they could have done a lot better and would have thusly increased the comedic value of the act.
grrrr to the screaming girl in the audience
Totally agree!
@tsofan2000 That was the point. :P It was supposed to be exaggerating the overdone 'covers' made of classic and well-known songs. Some great things shouldn't be messed with, and that's what they were trying to say here. :P
The lion must be dead.
the night must have been stormy
The longest time must have been too long (yep)
The night must have been too still
Too much Ice cream?
Too much leaning
The lollypop must have been bitter
The girl never been kissed (and probably never will be kissed)
Just say goodbye
@kreternal What do you expect? It's a live performance that was really funny.
Lol I've literally sang every one of these songs before.
I've been in various choirs for about 9+ years, and played piano professionally for 12. Having done that, I've can recognize pitch *somewhat.*
If they AREN'T out of tune, they chose reeeeeeeeally bad keys for a few of the songs. It's most noticeable during "for the longest time."
And, again, I still enjoyed it. I'm just giving a bit of critique.
I agree that singing in minor was their intent. I do not agree, however that they were completely successful for the duration of this eight minute video.
But hey--no worries. Everyone messes up a bit, and they still did a pretty good job with a funny arrangement.
No haters.
nice nice - yeah, i believe I have sung 95% of those songs - haha - I think since they're easy, catchy, people love it- its gonna be sung for years to come! =) and yes, i have to agree, the laughing gets pretty annoying
GENIOUS!!! I actually like Stand by Me better in minor... haha
They are not out of tune. All the songs have been arranged in Minor chords. read the description.....
Apparently there has been some sort of misunderstanding. I love Vocal Point quite a lot, and I understand that they're amazing.
I'm only saying that in the VIDEO they sound out of tune, whereas at the actual CONCERT, they probably weren't. I've recorded them myself, and I know that the video isn't an exact representation.
But 'cmon, guys! Let me give a little criticism without being thumbed down! People are still entitled to their opinions, and I was very polite about the whole thing.
Sheesh.
This is BYU, I doubt one person in the audience let alone a 20 miles radius is drunk.
@Qwinkly3 You are equivicating two different meanings of what a concert is, and as such is fallacious.
Vocal point, if you knew anything about them, is a performance group. The intend for the audience to get rowdy. They intend for there to be audience participation. They even bring audience members to join them on stage from time to time.
Vocal Point is not an arts concert, in which you are supposed to behave. They are a performance group, as many collegiate acapella groups are.
ha ha ha ha!
I really wasn't annoyed when I wrote that (one doesn't get inflections with type). Sorry 'bout that.
Everyone is defensive a bit, I guess, but I just think someone can disagree without being wrong, and I was trying to express that... but apparently failing.
Drat.
@praestant8
In case you didn't notice... this... is... a... JOKE!
I'm sorry that your sense of humor (or lack thereof) gets in the way of your "subjective good taste." Just check out some of their other stuff, and hopefully your "good taste" will not cloud your vision and allow you to see that they have the talent to pull stuff like this off.
theyre not out of tune, just changing from a major to a minor key.
which is the first song?
The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Would be nice if we could hear them sing, instead of a constant cackle.
they should try a lower note
@xlmeay *allowed
@cougarkid16 So if you don't care why are you bothering to comment on something from 3 months ago? Don't you have better things to do like fill out college applications?
They are SO fantastic but her laughter is quite annoying.... -__-
Hmmm... they ARE out of tune. I didn't notice until "for the longest time."
I still enjoyed it, though. Even though they were out of tune quite a bit.
Intentionally or otherwise bad intonation doesn't make it funny. Actually I think it is counter intuitive. Having flawless tuning while letting the arrangement in minor tonalities would have made it even better. Oh well, good taste is a subjective thing.
Ok I'm sorry, but this is one of the worst things ever done! They are making fun of some of the greatest songs ever made! No matter how overdone a song is, it can always be arranged differently to make it your own and make it current again. There is a reason why these songs are popular, because people love them and can be heard probably anywhere in the world. This video makes me sad; what a tragedy. Wow.
I love the arrangement, but it takes real vocal and musical talent to sing consistently bad. The fact is, they sound really good but they are doing it all on purpose to make fun of a cappella music.
I think it needs to be written a few more times with new medleys, cuz let's face it, a cappella music is great, but there are still a ton of songs that are overdone.
i'm all for comments but seriously? swearing?
man you guys butchered these songs
