  • Sad times, when I should be reviewing this car and singing its praises in stead I'm here telling you that you should not buy this car. Renaults choice to remove the head protecting airbags is quite shocking and therefore I cannot recommend this car to anyone.
Thats a real shame because if the airbag had not been removed in favour of a different type, then this car would get a massive thumbs up from me.

I had a a Zoe 40 and loved it. I did look at the 50 but was offered a superb deal on a VW ID.3 and I now have that on the drive. I can't imagine going back to a Zoe in its current configuration and whilst the air bag wouldn't be a deal breaker, Renault's attitude might well be. You have a young family and need to be sensible; you're clearly making the wise choice. In your shoes I might well do the same.

Personal i never bought a car on its safety rating, as a young man 17-25 it was the cost of insurance, 25-35 sorry to say it was power ,now 47 its basically economy cheap insurance and cost per mile .I will probably get slated for the comment, but being honest.

Feel like I dodged a bullet on this - was looking at ordering a Zoe in the autumn, partly from your enthusiasm for them. Even joined RZOC! As it was, the deal on a Leaf e+ Tekna was cheaper than a Zoe GT Line and decided the roomier rear seats and boot would be better for family use.
Real shame that Renault made the choices they did, and unfortunately I think the Zoe will be quietly shelved once new Megane production is up to speed. Hopefully rising used prices mean you'll not be too out of pocket - although everything else is more expensive too!

I agree with you that loss of 1 star (to make it 0 stars) is due to pole test but it is worth noting that this is performed at 30kph (about 18.5 mph). General side impact is at double that speed & I don’t think it failed that. I have read that reason pole test is at so low speed is because no car would pass the test at higher speed eg general side impact speed. I am as gutted as you that our ZE50 is less safe than earlier models on this one point - I am probably going to keep it for the moment though. Reason it lost the other 4 stars is, as you say, lack of the other safety features in Play model that are in GT line especially if you have one with AEB. Now that the previously optional safety features going to be or are in the other models as standard & Play model is dropped I wonder if Renault will resubmit model to NCAP and end up with 3 or 4 stars without bothering to replace thorax only airbag with old type combined thorax and head airbag?

Be aware the ncap rating is for the play model and from what I gather new ncap ratings for gp line would be higher than zero because of the electronic controls. I feel the standards authority should be contacted and maybe in uk watchdog tv program or similar just to get some publicity. Ps haven’t been able to get upgrade on tech that was shown on Renault owners club. This could be a law suit soon

I can see where your coming from however I have never had the NCAP ratings in mind before buying any car in the past and will not take into consideration when I buy my next car. I drive an EV and also a classic car and the classic wouldn't even be considered for an NCAP rating.LOL🤣

Hi I can see there is defiantly a split, it would be interesting to see if this is a division along age Young vs old and family vs invincible single man.
The kicker for me, is that Renault changed a key safety feature present on the previous version without telling anyone.
I have a classic too but mines usually tucked away in the garage, I don’t regularly transport my entire family in it. It’s driven in good weather when roads are quieter I.e not rush hour. Therefore the risk is lower, albeit if I do have an accident it’s still likely to be bad news, but I also know that.

@@eviain sounds to me like you were mis-sold the Zoe? If you weren't made aware that the airbags were no longer fitted, and (like most previous owners assumed they were) then you have every right to feel misled. Had you been made fully aware of the changes, I'm sure you would then have made an INFORMED choice and not have bought the car in the first place!

Hello, I've been considering the Zoe 50 as my next car for some time now. Renault has definitely kept the "airbag situation" quiet which I only recently discovered thanks to you and a few other reviewers. It's definitely a deal-breaker for me now, which is a pity as I'm downsizing from a large petrol car and this would be ideal.
Like you say in the video, I am not willing to compromise the safety of my family over this either. I noticed a video from a car dealer who referred to this as - "the elephant in the room" and found his remark to be blasé at the very least. He tried to then justify Renault's position as they had introduced a whole load of safety features in the Zoe 50 to make up for this. However, this makes no sense, it's a bit like having CCTV for your house and locks on your windows but decide not to bother with a front door!
Renault's disregard for NCAP's findings is pretty shocking and as you mention Iain, this could be a major problem where many other car manufacturers follow suit and flout the most BASIC safety features. Well done Iain, and thanks for making us aware of something that could potentially be catastrophic.

Not sure just how quickly Renault can provide a fix in the short term. Hopefully it can be delivered even if it's only some form of compensation payment as a technical fix (seat replacement/ecu s/w changes) could drag on (deliberately) hoping many owners pull the pin & sell. Personally, the 50 is still appealing only if it's just so much better in every other area than my 22kw Zoe.
All the best, I hope this issue gets resolved.

We had a ZOE ZE40 very impressed, we were so close to buying a ZE50, such a lucky escape we didn't. A buyer is right to assume/expect a newer model will be Better/Improved in all respects and not to find spec especially safety equipment has been reduced or compromised 🤕

Here’s the terrible thing, it’s better by far than a scooter or a Twizy. If you could guarantee it wouldn’t end up on a motorway, it’s be absolutely fine. I wonder what it does to insurance. It’s weird, it seems insurance companies don’t believe zero stars will affect their payouts? ! My daughter’s costed insurance for this, it seems no worse than any other electric car. But insurance is not the logical business the companies like to imply of course. It’s a rotten score, but if my daughter turned round and said she’s getting a scooter (I mean a real, decent-wheeled thing), we’d probably throw money at her to induce buying a Zoe. It’s all relative. And the inevitable problem is, if you select a car based on British motorway driving, you’re going to buy a big used Volvo, aren’t you? It’s a very big issue, and yet, is it. Sliding doors I think, what’s the alternative, is the question.

Annoys me in terms of resale like yourself also, and for the same reasons. I think Renault themselves class this as a strictly city car, hence why the didn’t add auto cruise control, even though the Zoe has more than sufficient range, I myself have done a 600 round trip, so can a test to this. I guess therefore their thinking is Zoe’s for the most part will only be involved in low speed accidents, so decided they could make more profit margin by omitting both airbags and the ACC.
What am I going to do? Well 90% of my driving is at low town speeds, so I guess wait and hope for Renault retro fit and/or compensation.
