- That's right, the 787B wasn't the only rotary to win the 24h of Le Mans. It's without a doubt one of the most popular race cars in the world but that does mean its relatives have fallen into obscurity. They too were Le Mans victors and built the foundation the 787B now lives on. So let's leave the 787B for what it is and talk about every other rotary to win at Le Mans.
#mazda #lemans #rotary Авто/Мото
Small correction, the Kudzu DLM wasn't an evolution of the DG-3, and was actually a completely new car for 96
I annoyingly discovered this too after i uploaded. They initially wanted to do an upgrade but soon realized making an entire new car was the best option
small correction, we never forget the 787B or its sound
if we count category wins too, god knows how many wins Porsche has
Just did the maths, they should have 19 wins overall and I think about 104-105 class wins.
109
I come for car and hear ACE COMBAT 👀
I appreciate that you talked about other classes. In my opinion, talking about just overall wins is kinda dumb, because of course the fastest class is going to have the overall win, but each class contends for their win and races the full 24 hours, so they should all get recognition.
true, some of the lower classes have seen some truly dominant performances. the oreca vipers are the perfect example.
It does make it funnier when that doesn't actually happen, early 2000's Daytona 24s and the 03 Spa 24 are prime examples of that, honestly times where the top class didn't win overall would probably be an interesting vid topic
@@jeracerx Petit Le Mans 2015 is another - along with (somewhat) the 2016 race; though it could be argued that the LMP2s were 'equal top' class.
Rotor fans never forgot. The cancellation of the RX Vision was our Great Disappointment
God those Kudzus are so underrated. Shame no one ever talks about them.
i know right. the kudzu DLY4 even has the same engine as the 787B and won its class at Daytona in 2001. mega underrated or just unknown to the general public
Jim Downing was a key in that program. Then, he was key to the development of the HANS device. Pretty high strike rate there.
One week after his victory in Le Mans with the Mazda 787B, i had the rare honour to sit next to Bertrand Gachot on a hot lap around the Zolder racetrack. The most exciting experience of my life ...
7:22 was hoping you are going to mention this. I remember reading this years ago right when the LMDH/LMH rulesets were fully finalized and immediately thought of the golden oppurtunity Mazda has with this...
...But no. They off course have to use the rotary engine now as a range extender for the MX-30.
At the very very least mazda is making something rotary again.
We all know the best place to test new technology is the racetrack so never say never. I dont see it happening soon realistically but im not giving up all hope just yet.
A lot of people also forget about how Mazda absolutely dominated the lower classes of IMSA, think the RX-7 is still the winningest model
Ace combat backgrounds, you're based
Man, that Ace Combat menu music in the background is doing things to me lol
Keep up the great content!
Man, Group C had the meanest, coolest looking cars in motorsport. I remember going to Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City for the '89 championship, at the height of Group C's popularity. That Mazda could be heard coming from miles away -- it was supremely loud! My favorite tho was the Silver Arrow Sauber-Mercedes that won that year and was dominant for much of the period. Fantastic cars, all of them.
Not as forgotten as Matra and their 3 wins between 1972 and 1974 , now THAT would be a VIDEO!
The RX8 was awesome to watch in the US IMSA series. Looked so funny racing against 911's, M3's, and Corvettes, but all be damned if it wasn't successful against those powerhouses.
You mean the RX8 GT, from the Grand-Am Rolex sports car series? I loved that thing! especially loved the Speedsource 70 car!
we do really need a video like this nowadays. Thanks for making it!
I know right? Thanks. And thank you btw for making excellent drawings. Fun fact, the green i use in my thumbnails is the exact same green you used in the 4x4 vw iltis drawing i commissioned from you a while ago.
@@stijnpaspont oh wow it's been a while hahaha
would love an episode on diesel in racing. or cart. or anything. fantastic videos
Audi won couple times with a diesel
Loved the video very informative, but it's slightly criminal to not include rotary noises in a rotary related video...
I just found your channel. Your voice is calming and the commentary is entertaining while I cook 😂 Thanks from Australia!
Excellent, excellent video!!! Good work!! Important history that people didn't know, or care about.
Today I learned about Mazda's successes beyond the beloved 787b!!Thank you for reminding me how much I love Wankels!
I love these videos!
Wow that indeed was a big surprise, I never knew. Thanks for sharing the story!
Following your videos, the content is just amazing
thank you! i don't plan on stopping any time soon. i still got a long list of topics to cover and I doubt I'll ever run out of stuff to talk about
huh.. didn't know about this.. very cool video, thanks!
Loving all these videos! Keep them
Coming
This is also why Juan Pablo Montoya is technically the only other driver to win the Triple Crown.
When did he win lemans
When did he win the F1 Championship?
@@Suprahampton One of the "Triple Crowns" (Graham Hill's original) was the Indy 500, Le Mans 24 hours and Monaco GP. It was only later that it became the World Championship as the F1 element.
@@dingrey Only the Pro-Am category of the LMP2 section in 2021. So a sub-section of a class.
This will probably be the most viewed video featuring Kudzu race cars tbh
awesome vid! the algorithim blessed me with ur channel :)
I’m loving your videos so keep up the good work! A video about Oldsmobile racers would be awesome if it was 80’s and early 90’s Trans Am, their short stint in IMSA in the mid 90’s or their Indy 500 dominance in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
7:19 4WD Rotary-electric hybrid... we can only hope.
maybe the RnD for it too expensive and I dont think Mazda cashing as well as honda or toyota...so...yeah..
In french we say : l'espoir fait vivre (Hopes keep us alive basically) we also say : tant qu'il y 'a de la vie, il y'a de l'espoir (as long as there's life, there's hope)
I'd say that waiting for a Mazda comeback at le mans makes us immortal
@@clippydaclip 😁
That Jun RX7 was a sight to behold what a beauty one of my favorites
Someone get Rob Dahm a sponsor
Keep making these informative videos!
Very cool to see the LM55 from gt7 at the end
This video should be pinned permanently on RUclips’s main timeline! Thanks for the video, man! Mazda at Le Mans isn’t just the 787B
Really cool cars those 80s Mazdas.
best intro ever
Any interest in making a video on the Grand-Am - ALMS split in American sports car racing (1998-2014)? it was pretty similar to the CART-IRL split in American open wheel racing, but a lot less well known.
Id need to do quite a bit of research on it as tbh i dont really know all the ins and outs of the split myself and then the eventual merge that ended up giving us the IMSA championship of today. Its all surface level knowledge. So were gonna keep it on a "maybe one day"
@@stijnpaspont Makes sense.
Lotta haters in this comment section saying a class win isn't a win in LeMans, you're entirely wrong. If that were the case, then why are there classes? A class win is just as impressive. It's a culmination of all the hard work put into the team, and also the car.
"Loved the video and I've learned a lot of new stuff.
They're most like the same people that drool over the Shelby Daytona
@@mintgoldheart6126 yeah or also "no replacement for displacement" American muscle car type folks hahaha
They're just coping at the fact that a japanese team won that much internationally.
I think a good distinction is the word 'at.'
They won Le Mans once (as in overall,)
They won at Le Mans 8 times (class wins)
You are absolutely correct that a class win is just as impressive, as the only car designed to go for the overall win was the 787B, so to expect any of the others to win overall is just absurd.
@@musewolfman completely agree on that distinction!
Congratulations and all the kudos to you for this very well made video 🔝💪👍
Not only informative but really full of sincere interest, research and clear view on the matter.
I hope it will help people to stop to silly consider Mazda as someone that won LM with rotary engine for pure casuality.
The RX7 model also won its class (for what I remember) 9/10 years in a row in IMSA between the end of '70s / end of '80s.
Such a remarkable technology, too easily put aside by sanctioning body (FIA) under pressure by "traditional" manufacturers at the beginning of the '90s.
Best wishes & cheers from Monza 🥂

Very well written. I can live with this statement. Cheers from a litlle town in county Twente near the German border, Netherlands.🍻🍻🍻
@@Joop.23-2-63 hey good morning!
Thanks for your cheers: when it's time for a beer I'm always on...pole position 😬
And thanks for your words!
Very kind indeed 👍💪
And if you happen to come in Monza for the WEC in July you'll be my guest: beer here isn't special, commercial one, but there are some decent pubs in Monza where to grab for you something acceptable.
Best regards and wishes 🔝🔝

Should mention the 792P as well, too bad Mazda pulled the engine right after the 91 season so it could never race
They didn't have a choice - the rotaries were banned in 1990 and weren't supposed to race in 1991. It was only the low 3.5L entries that at meant that at Le Mans only, they could enter the rotaries in 1991. The 792P was an IMSA-only car too, so was never intended for Le Mans.
Ace Combat music
So, if we say that Mazda won Le Mans 8 times, that would also mean that Mario Andretti won the Triple Crown, right?
I think a fair way to put it is that they won Le Mans once, and won *at* Le Mans 8 times. A subtle but important distinction.
Because it's not Mercedes or Porsche that's why everybody forgot about them
Nope... no one really cares about minor category wins. Do you see Porsche or Ferrari celebrating the hundred times they won at GT, GTLM or their many similar classes?
Even the teams that got the class wins? :D@@ernestogasulla7763
haha dorito goes brr
I want Mazda to come back for Le Mans 2024-2026 and design should be influenced by the Mazda lm55 vgt concept car should take on the likes Ferrari Peugeot Cadillac Toyota Porsche lmdh cars
Is it really a win when you're the only one in class?
To be fair, surviving LeMans at all is a feat of its own
"To finish first, first you have to finish"-You know who
isnt that the point of an endurance race? reliability is more important than speed
Didn't mention the Mazda rx-792P
The 792P only raced in IMSA; for 1992 at Le Mans they entered the Jaguar-based Judd-engined MXR-01.
Nowadays Mazda makes a bigger displacement 2 rotor engine and probably if they enter again with 3 rotors, it'll probably give the same output as 4 rotors. We need Mazda back on Le Mans!!!!
Not to mention, we have a vision Gran Turismo concept LM 55 would be a perfect opportunity for either LMDH or LMH
They got crazy lucky once, but they know very well they were never that competitive...
It's endurance racing ain't no luck in that . Like if it's their fault they engineered a car that looked still bran spanking new even after 24 hours and practically race ready after the lemans win . Get that lucky shit out of here
Is this ace combat briefing music?
Yes Briefing 1 - Ace Combat 5
That’s ok; so did they
My old RX7 race car approves this video!
In the 1991 Le Mans race, many of Mazda's competitors, including the Mercedes Sauber and Jaguar XJR9, were slightly more powerful than Mazda, but none of them could last 24 hours because they were turbocharged and also heated much more, but the 787b with a naturally aspirated engine produced 700 horsepower. Bukhari left behind all the competitors, that's why the legendary Mazda monster is a fitting name for the 787b. I wish I could see the 787b up close one day.
Nope. Jaguar only raced one 3.5 liter XJR14, and it was N.A., same as the others which were 7.4 liter XJR12. The only turbos on top were the Mercedes C11, but they used a very low boost turbo which had comfortably won the 1989 edition (Mercedes did not participate in 1990).
The Mercedes Sauber was being driven by Schumacher that year when it face off Mazda 787B, the problem was not so much the heating but the transmission gave in as it was a Diesel Engine and produced too much low rev torque for the transmission to resist.
@@unassailable6138 Whaat? The Mercedes C11 had the same 5 liter engine of the earlier C9 and it used gasoline. And Schumi's car had no transmission issues, only overheating and finished 5th.
Hey Stinj, when are we getting that Lola history video ?
Don't count on it any time soon. But that doesn't mean specific lola cars wont be featured in future videos
@@stijnpaspont also nice thing would be a video dedicated to Rotary cars in the rest of races, not LM exclusively.
Btw, now I see I mistyped your name above, sorry.
im drive me for mazda 757-767-787b in 1987-1991 esay drive mazda race car was softing gear shifting of mazda 757-766-787
Didn't know that Boeing had shares in Mazda. Thank fff I'ma joking or all of those cars would've crashed.

@@divecolosio4988😦
talk bout yourself boi, a 787b fan here since gran turismo 4 days
Ok, but why MAZDA? It was Robert Wankel.
yes he invented the engine but he didnt race lmao
Robert? Not Felix?
Felix wankel
forgor
so by your logic porsche has won le mans 109 times because of class wins…it doesn’t work that way
Come on, dude, the wins that go down in history are those of the top class - overall classification. Do you see Ferrari or Porsche celebrating their GT and GTLM wins together with their Prototypes, Group C, WSC, LMP1 and LMH wins?
You halfwit
Then you go ask aco to cancel the lower group, or less bullshit😅
Ferrari and Porsche celebrate all of their wins regardless of class. Both makes created one make GT series to celebrate such accomplishments. The GT classes at LeMans have become a lot more competitive since the 1990s so yes, it is a victory worth celebrating. Plus GT cars have much more races to run in.
"Do you see Ferrari or Porsche celebrating their GT and GTLM " uh ... have you ever read a Porsche add ? like ever ?
When you win at Le Mans, you win overall. A class victory is not a win. There is one winner at Le Mans. Class victories are... lame.
That's not how literally any person doing endurance racing sees it, though.
Class wins are significant. They're justification for all the hard work each team member put in to getting the best from their car. They deserve to be on the podium at le mans.
i agree in that case corvette won le mans 8 times in a similar chassis.
Damn, that's a really bad take.
i consider class victory a win, as long as there is at least 5 others in the class.
