- Here's the Angry Video Game Nerd episode 100! Had to reupload to the second channel. Nintendo's Robotic Operating Buddy or, R.O.B for short, was an attempt to increase sales following the video game crash of 1983. ROB was released in Japan in 1985 and saw an American release later the same year.
Originally planned to be the start of a Robot Series, there were only 2 games ever released, Gyromite and Stack Up. Both of the these games requires R.O.B. to play and prove to be more frustrating than fun. It was a bold move that paid off for Nintendo and paved the way for their tradition of making the player more interactive.
In this episode, the Nerd reviews both Gyromite and Stack Up, exploring the pitfalls of both of these original launch titles. He goes over both the functionality and dysfunction of R.O.B which culminates in the most epic battles of Godzilla-like proportions.

It still amazes me that Rob can only play Gyromite and Stack up due to his limitations but can kick James's ass and blow up the city with no problem. Still one of the best episodes of all time.

Yeah that was a pretty emotional line, "You're no hero! THIS is MY hero!" It's ironic because two years after the video game crash of 1983, a hero DID rise from the ashes and saved the video game market, but instead of it being R.O.B. like Nintendo had originally intended, it turned out to be Mario. That's what the nerd was getting at when he was reaching for Mario while saying "Nintendo made video games awesome again for the most part, but I don't think their success had anything to do with you!" It's sort of like when Walt Disney had originally intended for Oswald The Lucky Rabbit to become the face of his animation company. He did eventually get a face, but instead of Oswald, it turned out to be Mickey Mouse. Mario is to Nintendo what Mickey Mouse is to Walt Disney Pictures in almost every way.

R.O.B is a pretty cool concept despite how slow and awkward he is in gameplay. I am surprised they had this kind of technology in the 80s.

That's why you loaded cartidges like you load tapes in a VCR, and why the console sometimes came bundled with the robot: to resemble a toy more than a console.

After all these years I have finally witnessed how R.O.B. works and "plays". I grew up with these things laying around friends houses (usually broken) but even they had no idea what the hell to do with it except make it spin the gyro really fast and burn the crap out of your finger if you touched it

That end battle is so unrealistic; not because it's a giant James fighting a giant R.O.B the Robot, but because he actually managed to hit something with the Super Scope.
On another AVGN binge, and this is always a favorite. The irony is that R.O.B. did actually play a big part in the NES being successful at least in the west, but not because it was actually any good. I actually still have my R.O.B. It's scary to think that without that janky robot toy, video games might not have taken off or been as successful in the 80's as they were.

Honestly there are so many 80s projects that were made recently that James would’ve been perfect for. But ya know he’s a independent filmmaker with only one movie based on his character released in theaters to his name.
The ending is beautiful enough to make a grown man cry. Absolute masterpiece, as always in the timeless AVGN saga, truly an outstanding episode, definitely up there with some of the best ones, if not maybe even the best one, no wonder why it's James's favourite! Lul

If the R.O.B. had even been half as powerful as it was in this episode, I would've most likely forgiven it for trying to kill me. The real thing was so useless that we ended up strapping fireworks to it and murdering it in a firepit.
