- My robotic buddy R.O.B. completes the last level (Phase 40) of Gyromite spinning two tops simultaneously!
I am aware it can be done by just spinning one (can you figure out how?), but I am more interested on the spinning top part than the game.

Oh, wow! I was wondering what the flashes were! I honestly thought the game might have been having some corruption issues or something. 😂
I had somehow never heard of R.O.B. before today, and I would have been prime age when it came out. I bet it was amazing in ‘85! I’m still impressed with it, but I’m not patient enough for it now. Lol. It did make me realize how long things took back in the day, and maybe this guy helped pave the road of patience necessary for dial-up internet. Lol. Thinking about dial-up makes me want to go use the internet on my computer and make a phone call at the same time just because we can now. Hahah

R.O.B. was amazing. He did a great job saving the gaming industry with Mario. What a robot! Let's all raise a glass of motor oil for him! To R.O.B.!
My only question is this: How does he spin the tops?
To spin up the tops R.O.B. places them on the tower on its left. It has a hole for the axis of the top and a rim that starts to rotate when it feels the weight of the top.

I'm amazed how long those tops spin to this day.
Like other companies of the 80's and before, they built their products with quality.

That's the one thing that keeps going through my head watching videos of this thing. How did they do it? I legit don't understand. The button caps they get placed in must be really smooth plastic.
@@darkl3ad3r they are heavy gyro tops with a narrow round point, they spin for ages wherever you left them and the caps are indeed smooth concave dishes. not visible in normal images but under the top metal layer is a thick steel washer making up most of the width and the top shaft is mounted loosely on a pin so it doesnt interfere with rotation. rob and his accessories have a fair amount of glue at certain critical areas which has all failed with age so inner components which would not have been visible nondestructively can now be seen directly when the glue fails on its own, my particular sample was quite dysfunctional because of all the glue failing
To this day, ROB is some ludicrously impressive tech sold in the 1980s as an accessory to a game system.
I've had a R.O.B. for 15 years with none of the racks or gyros, so I've never seen it in action... this is the coolest thing ever!
Love the video. I'm 38 and played that game as a kid. I have a 5 year old daughter that I just played it with and I had her control the pipes. She said "I'm faster than R.O.B."

Sakurai should add that Gyromite level as a stage in Ultimate, as well as the doctor guy as a trophy. R.O.B. being only represented with himself is not okay

They should make it so that if a player plays as ROB and they throw a Gyro it switches the doors lol

I remember seeing the commercials for this when I was kid. This is the first time I've seen it in action. This still looks like some futuristic next gen gaming shit to me. A robot that you play games with? That's the future man.

tbh R.O.B was quite innovative at the time it was made. People back then must've been like "woah, a robot that operates the second controller with spinning tops and some mechanical buttons? Cool!"
OMG this robot use to aggravate me so much waiting for it to pick up the disk then for it to put it in the right color. Those were the days. Kids will never live such happy times

That's awesome. I got the deluxe set for Xmas in '85. I don't think I ever completed a single stage on Gyromite with ROB. Years later my brother tore his guts out trying to make a bong out of him.

the amount of patience strategy to complete this is quite amazing.
Had this thing as a kid and never knew what it was or how to play it... glad i stumbled onto this video... every so often i'd have a flashback of this robot and asked myself what the hell was the purpose for it lol...

Thanks so much for sharing this when I was a kid I had this gyromite, duck hunt & the running game with the mat - Gyromite was slow. It would make me mad - lol!! I appreciated it though. Brings back sooo many great memories with my family & siblings 🙏🏾🙏🏾😊😊

My NES was a hand-me-down that came with a copy of Gyromite, but no R.O.B. Never even heard of R.O.B. until years later. I had no idea I was playing Gyromite the wrong way!

Dude you are expert level! I had one of those when they first came out, but as a 7 year old I didn’t have the patience to maneuver the game with ROB. I still have ROB and all of the pieces somewhere in my parent’s garage.

Hi. Im ROB too lol. I had all of this in Christmas of 1986. This was some crazy stuff back in '86 compared to Atari 2600 and 5200 or Collecovision or Intelivision. I wore out my first Nintendo by either 89 or 90. Then got the one with the orange zapper and SMB. So I had two Duck Hunt's and SMB. I held onto R.O.B. and the spinner setup platforms for a few more years. Sadly like a idiot I threw them out. I maybe got Robot Operating Buddy to work with Gyromite generally on 6 occasions as proficient as this in the video. A lot of them never really worked right out of the box for some reason. Or worked inconsistently. But no kid in my neighborhood that I knew of had him I miss him.

this seems like a such a complex method of gaming and i would love to try it. The back and forth of putting the spinners after spinning them and trying to move them on and off buttons to raise and lower the pillars. I've never even heard of such a complex video game untill brothers friend searched up R.O.B. well we were playing smash bro for wii u

That was awesome! I might consider buying the Family Computer Robot for my Famicom, and ROB for the NES. Hes super cool!
I didn't buy an NES set with ROB. I was a little late for that. My set had the console, two controllers, zapper, and Mario and Duck Hunt on the same cartridge. But looking at that box, looking at the way the controller is set up, made the old thing feel new again. It brings back how big that cardboard box was, and how the styrofoam padding smelled, and the squeaky sound that padding made. And how hard the plastic zapper was in my hand, and the way it clicked. Just bringing back all those details.

With the advances in artificial intelligence and robotics I don’t see why Nintendo can’t make a R.O.B. 2.0 for the switch, even if it’s just for specifically programmed timed buddy challenges and responses to imagery or WiFi signals.

Can we all just acknowledge what a freaking awesome idea for a product R.O.B is? And this thing came out in the 80s? I feel like there's so much potential here that isn't being tapped into, especially as someone who grew up not really having anyone else in the house who was wanted to play games with me. Kids today would love this thing.
I bought this Robot Game for my 2 boys for Xmas 1985. They were 6 & 8. I thought this was the coolest game I had ever seen. I was right. They are both great gamers & computer literate.
This was my first Nintendo game. I got the Gyromite/Duck Hunt Combo and Robi the Robot would always get me killed on this game.

R.O.B. was moving kinda of slow. It probably would be faster to just grap the player two joystick with your other hand and move the red and blue locks yourself. My best childhood friend had this game 38 years ago. He would either have me or his younger brother control the locks while he moved through the game: grabbing all the plants. I had only seen my friend use the robot once. Now I understand why.

Hello, I do not know how to contact you, I wanted to know if it is possible to use a few minutes of the game process that appears in your video for a video on my channel about ROB, of course credited both when the footage is shown and in the final credits.

Of course, it didn't work as most of us expected it to work at the time of its release. It could've been the marketing that launched our expectations beyond anything that was rational. I'm really not sure what I expected when I was a kid, opening my new NES Deluxe Set for the first time. It just seemed so futuristic and high-tech. But in hindsight, R.O.B. is really a fascinating experiment. Like a marvel that was meant to be played and mastered - with all its limitations - even more so than the two games that were made for it. After a few weeks I tossed it aside, thinking it was crap, and that it would've been impossible to beat Gyromite using it. In the 80's, people were used to consoles like the Atari 2600, and cheap home computers like the Commodore 64 or the VIC 20. There were a number of half-a$$ed games that were hardly tested, and some were unplayable if they even worked at all. It was easy to throw R.O.B. in the same huge pile of useless products and software. Same with the Power Glove...though some people have now mastered that...apparently.

Rob destroyed TVs back in the day ....i didn't use it more than once...but I got plenty of use from the blaster.... so many memories i got the nes from NYC for Christmas by the next Christmas everyone had one but for a year i was the coolest kid in school
